The exploding Batris

Unless this is just rough footage it looks like they've gotten rid of the really nice, fluffy trademark orange and pink TNG explosions for something rougher and more yellow and harsh. I don't really care for it. So the sploddies weren't captured on film? That seems odd. Interesting to see that even when scaled to the same size the crappy Amazon video is sharper and more detailed than the DVD screen cap.

Thats highly unfortunate because the replacement cg explosion sucks!

Ok...I actually like the new one better, looks more like a real explosion.

The old explosions were superimposed over the ships, the new one looks like it is generated from the ship itself.

amazon.de has uploaded the short documentary clip that's on the disk but hasn't appeared online yet
Great find gaghyogi49 !
I love this TrekBBS for fans who find this stuff.
also here is a permalink for the video:
http://www.amazon.de/gp/mpd/permalink/m1I63HVV53JQ4O/ref=ent_fb_link

running time 1:30

breaking it down by shot.
the zoom in shot of the archive at :15 shows the 35mm film cans (most likely the original camera negative selects with 10 second handles for each shot) with handwritten notes on paper on the side of the film cans. along with the blue boxes holding 1" analog videotape episode masters (or alternate protection masters) or the original film-to-tape 1" telecine tapes from 1987 but unlikely due to storage space required.

The interview with Okuda & Craig Weiss from CBS Digital at :38 and Rod Roddenberry at :49 show they are already doing interviews for special features for the season 1 Blu-ray release.

Nice Blu-ray cover artwork at 1:23 and the title is
Season 1
DIE BLU-RAY edition.
This could be the cover art for the US edition later in 2012.

The US cover art is on my avatar.

I like the new explosion also, it looks more "realistic." I use that term loosely, because, although not impossible, explosions in space actually appear much different than they do in the movies and tv :-P

Apart from a few specks in the titles the other two episodes look glorious. Dunno why they didnt make the first shot of Sins more static though, since it's a new Bird Of Prey anyway.

The moving star background is distracting and unnecessary, but pretty much like the original. No big deal as it's basically just an establishing shot with nothing really going on.

Got my disc from Play.com this morning and have just finished watching all the episodes. I'm going to have to sell my DVDs as there's absolutely no going back to watch that format now. This blows them out of the water. The sticker on the sleeve states that the first season release is Summer 2012, which I think is a little sooner than we were expecting. There's also a £5 cashback offer for those of us who bought the taster disc.

Agreed. The new explosion looks a LOT better.

So far I really like the approach they're taking-- they're not creating all new shots exactly, but simply bringing the existing shots and effects up to a more modern level.

Now I can't wait to see how they redo the explosion of that other Galaxy Class ship in Contagion.

Another superimposed explosion, just like Lantree in season 2. Never was a huge fan of those. I think they used a shot of some exploding granular substance like sugar to make them, then added some Quantel Harry FX.

Interestingly..just visited at CGI industry forum and when the STNG-R was announced they were all saying how good the TOS-R was and they were looking forward to the STNG-R.

I do not like that CGI explosions at all. I know they filmed actual explosions and superimposed them over the model work. I looks far more realistic this way. The CGI looks dreadful.

It also makes me wonder how they are going to remaster explosions like the Borg cube in BOBW2 and the various Enterprise destructions in Cause and Effect. Here's hoping they've actually use the effects shots on those episodes.

I don't get the talk about "CGI explosions" - the new ones are most likely practial plates too (from a commercial stock footage archive).

No doubt someone working on the project is monitoring fan reaction and will take corrective steps when appropriate for the full season sets. Another good reason for releasing the sampler well ahead of the full season sets.

You are joking, right?

I thought he was...

I admit it I may have typed before I thought.

All I meant was that I'm sure the people working on it are not oblivious to what people are saying about it. If fans notice errors that the remastering team didn't they may well correct them.

Except the old explosion WAS a real explosion and they are both being superimposed. Unless they rebuild the Batris in CG which is extremely unlikely.

I don't know that new explosion to be CGI, only that it looks better. I suppose we'll find out.

The originals weren't exactly hot stuff, but the new explosions look like somebody crumpled up a ball of tinfoil and bounced an orange floodlight off of it. Not a fan.

Looks fine to me; certainly, no worse than the original explosion.

(Based only on the still image of the new version, mind you).
