Who Else Loved Lieutenant Barclay?

I loved Hollow Pursuits, but I didn't think too highly of his later episodes. With that said, I was happy he was given a cameo in FC.

The introduction of the character was very disturbing - wrongthink is bad! Lustful thoughts? You're not pretty enough to have lustfull thoughts! Privacy? What's that?
Sadly, 20 years later, we're well down that road.

One thing I never understood is why Troi never felt his attraction toward her. I know it's just the writers ignoring her "empathic" abilities for the sake of the story, but it's still annoying.

Far from the only time that Deanna's abilities had a blind spot or otherwise let her down.

Q didn't have the kind of onscreen chemistry with Sisko that he had with Picard or Janeway. All Sisko wanted to do was punch Q in the face...otherwise Sisko wanted nothing to do with him. At least Picard and Janeway sort of enjoyed sparring with Q. Sisko would have none of it.

As for Barclay, I totally identified with that guy. Barclay was much more realistic than any other character we've seen, IMHO. At least Barclay had faults. He wasn't the ultra-perfect type that Gene was always trying to put out there.

Q was a character that was meant as a foil for Picard's stuffiness and self righteous smugness. He was a being that was so powerful, that even Picard with his underlying self righteousness, was forced to bow once in a while to Q. Janeway fits that profile also, because she was basically female Picard, even down to the Rambo antics.

Sisko on the other hand was a very angry character, and he's damn lucky Q found his over the top uncontrolled anger amusing, otherwise he could have just turned him into a terallian amoeba permanently.

Q is like a childhood bully, in a way. He didn't mess with Sisko because Sisko fought back hard. Sisko kicked Q's ass. Bullies don't like that.

Indeed. She was walking around that ship in a catsuit that left little to the imagination; maybe we're supposed to believe that the ship was peopled by a bunch of eunuchs, but my thinking is that she totally missed that most of the male crew wanted to do really nasty things to her.

I liked Brocolli as a character too.

No surprise he features in my two favourite Voyager episodes.

I thought it was a nice/interesting touch to place him in the series. I guess they had Geordi who had a disability, so adding Reg is no different.

I LOVE him. Me and brother both bought his action figure doll over any of the other cast members because hes a real person with the same imperfects, social awkardness, and lack of confidences that many dorky introverted people can relate to. I also thought his holo addiction was nice because u can see how the disease of addiction works. Some people really STILL dont understand that it is a DISEASE, and lots of ppls with addictions actions are not done to be mean, but its all part of the disease that controls them. No one takes a drink and wants to be an alcoholic, no one takes a hit of weed and wants to be a junkie. No body want to see boobs on the computer and become addicted to porn, but all these things are part of the disease of addiction. And this and the epidsode i nthe 1st season with the guy who played kirks son whose whole race was controlled by another because of this drug, were the only 2 next gen examples i can remember. so for me Barlclay has a lot to over come. Its interesting to see him deal with real problems on a ship with many "model" humans around him.

I like Barclay and even loved that he made a cameo in First Contact, but I thought they made him too much of a buffoon there. He was more of a caricature than a person struggling with real shyness.

Maybe she learned to tune it out due to every guy feeling that way.

When has he not been a buffoon?:vulcan:

I think he's a breath of fresh air, particularly when I went through TNG the first time on dvd. He's so unlike everyone else on the ship, but I think that is what makes him special. It's nice Piller and company were able to incorporate him into the show, especially given the insistance from Roddenberry that everyone on the ship be essentially without personal flaws.

It's also very funny the way that they introduced him - particularly with an out-and-out holodeck fantasy. He's not just a character that is insecure professionally and socially awkward, but we also get to know what he fantasises about.

^ I thought it was over the top and out of character. Shyness doesn't eqaul comedic buffoonery, unless he was going though a manic episode or something.

Did Roddenberry really insist on that? Or is that something that gets embellished by fans over time?

When I first saw that, I thought... Oh boy. He's going to be a real troublemaker. :rommie:

He really grew on me, actually. There was a malicious strand embedded in "Hollow Pursuits", I think, but, when Barclay was featured in other episodes, I really enjoyed his performance. Flaws and all, his character took on a very real quality. I just watched "Genesis" for the first time in a while (I know that isn't a big favorite among TNG fans, but I do like the episode), and I really liked his part in it, especially at the end.

Barclay was great. He was the smart one that was so introverted. He was neurotic. He was lovable. He was great in Voyager. He did what he believed in even if he got in trouble for it. Loved him, only wish he had been on more. And considering how long he was on, he made quite an impact.
