2011 NFL Season - A New Game

I have always found it amazing how people dump on Modell and the Ravens when other owners who ripped teams out of cities and don't suffer any repercussions in public opinion (Colts, Rams, Titans, Cardinals).
Uhm, not sure where you get your information. (oddly, I've lived in most of these cities...)

The city of Baltimore hates Indianapolis with a passion for stealing their team (a team they weren't supporting, by the way). Ask anyone in Baltimore about Mayflower, and you'll get an earful. (I'm from Indiana, and a Colts fan).

Georgia Frontiere is universally reviled for her horrible management of the Rams, and everyone was pissed when she moved them to St. Louis. Los Angeles loved their team, and she stole it away. Now that she's dead, there's hope that the team will come back. (I live in California now). Both the Rams and Colts are situations where the owners took the names and records with them when they moved, further pouring salt in the wound.

The Oilers/Titans is a bit different, because that move seemed amicable. The city at the time was in a depression and didn't want to build a new stadium, so Adams took the team to Tennessee. It worked out for Houston when they were able to build a new stadium and get an expansion team, and residents there love the Texans. (I lived in Houston during the final years of the Oilers). The team was renamed to the Titans, but kept the records.

The Cardinals have moved twice, but Chicago already had their team. St. Louis got the Rams a few years after the Cardinals left. I've never lived in St. Louis (but my sister does), so I don't know what the local feeling is for the Cardinals.

At least Cleveland was smart enough to force Modell to leave the records and name with the city when he stole the Browns. The Ravens are essentially an expansion franchise but with the players and front office from a previously established team.

Weren't the Ravens in field goal range already? I don't really understand that call, looked a bit defeatist to me.

Calling for the draw on third down sums up Cam Cameron's entire existence as an NFL offensive coordinator: Fucking worthless. That was the most obvious draw play in the history of professional football.

As for fourth down ... eh, hard to say. Given the conditions -- it's 28 degrees with a not-great track -- I suspect that having Cundiff kick it from 51 was a considerably lower percentage play than going for it. Unfortunately, the Patriots have this Vince Wilfork.

I probably would have kicked it, but that's me. I guess when you're the coordinator, you play by different rules than a j6p sitting on his couch.

Holy shit.

Billy Cundiff is a dead man in Baltimore tonight. Dude's gonna be hitchhiking home.

Welp.

That's it, I guess I have to hope and pray that the 49ers have the ability to stop the Dark Lord Belichick.

As much as I would have liked to see guys like Ray Lewis and Ed Reed end up in the big game, I can't stand Suggs. On those grounds alone, I "had" to be a Pats fan today, in spite of what they did to my crew last weekend.

With that said, that was a very impressive tip-drill INT by the Ravens in the fourth quarter. Great play by both guys involved.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Long live the Empire, baby! :D

Fun fact: this marks the tenth (or ninth, whichever) straight season in which the AFC was represented in the Super Bowl by either the Patriots, the Steelers, or the Colts.

God, the refs look so awkward trying to explain the new OT rules.

Guns needs to hang it up after this game, he'll never have another opportunity to give so many long-winded explanations for so many rules after tonight.

In contrast, the NFC has had a different team representing them in each of the last 10 seasons. If the 49ers win, that would make it 11.

The five teams that haven't recently gone to the Super Bowl? Detroit (never), Dallas ('95), Washington ('91), Atlanta ('98), and Minnesota ('76).
