Here are the proper frames:

Looks to me like they redid the LCARS that was shown on an embedded CRT in CG, to do away with the ugly curvature.

Look at all the Care and Attention to Details we all are getting:

Notice something different?

If you're hinting that they replaced the original LCARS graphic, it would have had to be recomposited, so there are some minor differences in sizing and positioning. The two shots in the comparison are aren't exactly synched up so I can't say for sure but it appears the contents of the LCARS panel is the same (it's a bunch of nonsensical numbers, not replaced with actual "Klingon Data File" names or Sensor readout).

Was the original on a CRT? I know for background panels they used them, but for a hero shot like this weren't they usually composited?

I thought they always used a very simple method - backlighting of painted translucent graphic sheets. I could well be wrong, however.

Mike Okuda made VHS tapes which were played on CRT monitors for scenes with moving graphics. Looks like CRT in the DVD screencap.

Ah, I was wrong in that case. Was the original text computer generated or were cells drawn by a graphics artist and videoed? It seems a little too fine detail for the late 80s/early 90s for CGI.

This was burnt in in post production. When you watch the complete scene, you can see a slight jitter. The moving graphic remains stable (done in post production) while the rest of the scene slightly shakes, as the camera was slightly shaking. This is TNG Season 3, CRT monitors were rarely used back then.

Ok thanks, that's interesting. I know the Enterprise-A bridge in Star Trek VI was packed with CRT monitors, but that was a couple of years after Sins of the Father.

Well, the new shot definitely looks better as the perspective is correct now and the BoP is now facing the Enterprise and not the camera ;-)

The windows of the Enterprise-D are lit differently (compare the DVD screenshot and the new HD shot), but I'm not too sure yet if this is really a CG model or just different footage of the 6-footer.

To me it kind of has some of the telltale signs of CG, e.g. the lettering on the nacelle support has fuzzy edges which makes it look like a texture instead of painted on, and the copper ring behind the bussard collector has CGI-y shading, and some of the horizontal lines on the neck are curved more smoothly than I remember from photos of the model, making me think it's UV mapping.

I'm not entirely sure, but it does look a bit CG, but quite good CGI. If it's CG it's tons better than their TOS work. Would make me hopeful they actually have the talent now to do DS9 ...

Edit: OTOH, some of the detailing on the nacelle support has the slightly imperfect, non-straight, non-level looks of a model, but that could also be accounted for by creating textures from photos of the model and a bump map to match them, or hand-painting both to simulate a model paintjob.
