Big Bang Theory, yes or no?

Community is a different brand of comedy. Its very surreal and takes chances in the way it presents it stories. Big Bang Theory is much more traditional in structure. Troy and Abed make Sheldon look mundane.

I couldn't get into it at first, because the nerds were just so exaggerated and cartoonish.

But then I started watching again in the second season and somehow got completely hooked on the show and the characters. The humor is a lot more brash than in something like Community, but I still find it just as freakin hilarious.

i enjoy it. i can only watch one or two episodes at a time. my parents seem to really love it for some reason though.

I can't stand it. It's too "sitcom-ish" and forced for me. Plus I despise the nerd stereotypes on the show. They all look like cartoon nerds. The geeks I've known, as well as myself, tend to be more in the "Jay and Silent Bob" range of looks. Long haired, heavy metal \ punks who like sci-fi, gaming and comic books.

One of my favourite shows. I find it laugh out loud funny a lot of the time and never actively bad. Certainly there are a hell of a lot worse attempts at sitcoms out there. I get all the references and think all four guys (and now all four girls aswell) are really good characters.

I also enjoy Two and a Half Men (or at least I did, I haven't seen the new Kutcher stuff) and Mike and Molly, Chuck Lorre's other two shows. Plus Cougar Town and Modern Family.

.

Since its a show about characters who's lives revolve around science and science fiction I'm not sure how it's pandering. That's like saying Scrubs was pandering by including references to medicine.

They come across, to me, as superficial and dull as opposed to coming out of conversations naturally.

Agreed. The dialogue with it's emphasis on jpm "jokes per minute" come across as just a typical American sit-com. Which is why, IMO, most American sit-coms suck, wanting to worry about making every line "funny", rather than let the characters just be funny and let them develope naturally.

"The nerd humor never felt honest"

Exactly.

Tried watching it. Just another awful American shitcom filled with really bad OTT canned laughter. I can't stand them

I watched the first 3 seasons in the space of a few weeks and loved them. Watching S4 week by week though, I don't find it as funny. Not sure why that is.

I still enjoy it though. It does mock the more anal type of geeks, but they deserve to be mocked, so whatchagonnado.

I love it. I don't think the jokes are too sterotypical or pandering. Sure there is a lot of sci-fi and comic stuff, but how many shows (esp. how many comedies) do you have that use references to quantam theory, scientific history and just far-out minutae? I think its one of the best written shows in the best decade. (although Wolowitz in the first season was nauseating with his constant womanizing)

So what do you guys think of the TV series "The Big Bang Theory"? Are they painting us in a favorable light or mocking us? Personally, I think it's really funny...in a good way.

Mocking us. Period. This show is nothing but making fun of nerds and any nerd that thinks its audience is laughing with him is delusional.

It's brilliant because;

1. Jim Parsons is GREAT as Sheldon

2. Loads of sci-fi guest stars

3. Kelly Cuoco as Wonder Woman

4. Great references, love the one where Sheldon reserves the TV to watch Joss Whedon's Firefly because 'It's bound to run for years'.

5. People tell me I remind them off Amy Farrah Fowler

I don't really do sitcoms, but, on occasion I run across an episode while flipping channels and find it entertaining. Only other Sitcom I'll stop on if I run into it is How I Met Your Mother

I like all the references and guest stars, but I have a low tolerance for the format. (joke every 8.5 seconds, gratuitous laugh track)
It has it's moments, but not enough for me to enjoy watching it consistently.

if you don't find the idea of peple being into science, sci-fi, and comic books inherently hilarious because.... just look at the nerds, ha ha ha! then you realize that it's just a dumb show with repetitive humor.

I tried watching a few episodes and couldn't stand the show. I'm fine with nerd humour, just as long as it's something more than "we're nerds [insert random sci-fi referance]. Ha ha ha."

I would say the characters are really annoying, but everytime I do someone else says "they're supposed to be."

I own all the seasons on DVD and it is my favorite show! I am even on a Big Bang Theory message board.

Sometimes the fun house mirror is the most revealing.
