Star Trek III

ST III is terrible. I've got it on Blu Ray and I must admit that in high resolution there are details or terribleness I hadn't seen before.

The color palate is out of whack. The Bird of Prey, could it be more green? The little spy ship it destroys, could it be more plastic looking? The dragon-dog on the BoP, could it be more muppet-like? The outfits are terrible, just terrible. Flamboyant, loud, weird outfits. The Enterprise gets messed up (and I don't mean the end). In TMP and TWoK it was shimmering silvered beauty. In this film the ship is overlit and looks like it has a bucket of white paint thrown over it.

They kill Kirk's son, but so what? We never really knew the guy.

Saavik is no longer Saavik, but someone terrible.

Spock would be so self-centered as to burden McCoy with his soul? Our logical Vulcan friends would even believe in souls? The audience is supposed to believe in souls?

The planet aka worst set ever.

The torpedo soft-landed? Sure.

How stupid would the Klingons have to be to think that a boarding party of six or seven guys would be enough to subdue a crew of hundred?

The Excelsior. Ugly bridge. Ridiculous chairs. Terrible colors. The graphic displays look like TRS-80 - major step down from the computer graphic-representations in TWoK.

It's only redeeming qualities are that it is part of the "trilogy" and is NOT Star Trek V.

That wasn't the thing of it.

The thing of it was, the Klingons were betting that Kirk and crew would safeguard the hostages lives at any cost (as the Feds might usually do) and would allow the Klingons to board the Enterprise unopposed.

the Genesis device and Genesis planet concepts are okay with you but a katra is a bridge too far?

Vulcans have an established backstory covering their interest in souls and the afterlife, don't they? Maybe they don't, but this movie sets it in stone I feel.

What's wrong with STII is easy to forgive because everything else is so right.

STIII, on the other hand, is just bad piled on top of bad.

While I like to try and appreciate different viewpoints, I did not exactly intend this to become a thread asking what is wrong with Trek III or the other features in the series. Just saying. Let's try and keep this a positive thread. Having gone back and read the replies, I worry that the focus has changed by some posts more so than others.

We didn't know then exactly what he'd done, but Spock deposited his katra into Nurse Christine Chapel when Henoch tried to take over his body in "Return to Tomorrow".

Not my first film experience but I did see it in the theater and it was a blast. I remember people clapping and cheering when the Enterprise cleared spacedock and cheering as well when the film went over and Spock was back.

The BoP was a cool looking design.

It took stones to destroy the Enterprise. I was more moved when they destroyed the ship than when they killed Spock.

There was some decent humor.

It's just the rest that was terrible. :p

I like everything about ST III except Chekov's "Dutch Boy" outfit when they steal the enterprise....kinda funny it changes later.

Yeah, it's weird he changes his clothes in the 3 months after TSFS and before TVH.

Actually, I think it's more weird that nobody else does. It's pretty hot on Vulcan, so everyone else must stink to high heaven.

We could rather argue that since it's so hot on Vulcan, nobody uses the heavy and warm clothing they wore when they stole the Enterprise - except at the start of ST3, where they are freezing in the Vulcan morning on that high altitude starport...:vulcan:

I loved the props in Star Trek III. In Treks I and II, the phasers, communicators, and tricorders just didn't look familiar. But in III, it looked like someone decided to seriously upgrade the designs from the original series.

Yep, they did the same thing at the theater I saw it in as well. But when the Enterprise went screaming across the sky in flames, the audience started booing and many walked out.

Many, including the friends I was with, was very upset about that because "Kirk would never sacrifice his ship." And they were right, it was waaaaay out of character.

The only redeeming part was the last scene where Kirk and Spock are finally united ("The needs of one outweigh the needs of the many.")

Geez, I was just damn happy Nimoy was back in the franchise.

It was way out of character for Kirk to take a near-impossible situation and turn it into a victory, thereby saving his crew?

I disagree, I think it was one of Kirk's finest moments in the movies.

When the ship fell into the atmosphere 'many people walked out'

Wow, I never ceased to be amazed that people say lies like this and expect others to believe it.

Saw the movie 5 times in theater--no one walked out.

Must have been a town of total morons and i mean total.

Now now let us not permit ourselves to descend into mocking tones and name-calling, we're all having such a fabulous time here which I thank you all for.

Sorry, I had just waken up and hadn't yet located my PC hat. There was probably a dozen ways I could have put that besides the heartfelt way i did.

ST III is a very very good movie. With just a technical tweak here or there, it would have been considered a great Trek film by many. I think a victim of budget limitations, and the ability to create a more realistic looking Genesis landscape with 1983 vfx techniques.

Its all good, friend Grant. I just did not want to see my beloved thread moderated or something to tyhat effect.
I know all to well what its like having a less than stellar morning and having to deal with people. So, no worries.
