Edgar Ramirez may be the new del Toro in Star Trek (1)2

^ He's a good actor but on the slight and small side, isn't he?
If he's good enough to play the Commandante, he's good enough to play Kor (or whoever else the antagonist will be)!!

I thought we were working on the assumption that he was playing Khan. Although the casting of the slight (though tall) Benedict Cumberbatch seems to have put the kibosh on that (I'm happy to say).

Geez. No Khan. Been there, done that.

And, for all the talk about Khan being Kirk's "Moriarty" or "Lex Luthor," he isn't.

Khan was a one off character, well played by Ricardo M, in a single ep of the original series. He was no more the series' primary villain than Apollo or the Gorn. Khan worked as a character/plot device in the second film in large part because his situation created an opportunity to do a story about Kirk getting older and realizing that not every thing he did as a young captain was as brilliant as he (and the viewer) might have hoped.

Right now, the film series is in a reboot and we are in the midst of Kirk's early career.

So, unless you are going to basically remake "Space Seed," simply to give us a remake of "Wrath" later, there's no point. Do something original.

When will Edgar Ramirez ever see his Hollywood career break?

I suppose nailing Jason Bourne in The Bourne Ultimatum wasn't enough?

I don't even know what a Tholian is supposed to look like! Aren't they insects or something? :rommie:
Kinda shaped like a Skitter, color is glowy orange, and crystaline looking

Well this Cumberbatch guy is pretty ugly, so maybe there's something to that. He could also play a salt monster or a Horta. But I'm thinking, he'll be playing a role where ugly is an advantage, and that has KLINGON written all over it.
Do something original.

That almost certainly will not happen in this movie, and probably not in the next one either. It's not anyone's fault, but there's a lot of pressure on these movies to succeed and part of the way they are doing it is by glomming into recognizable names. How do you think we got Kirk and Spock and the gang to begin with? Why didn't they make up an original new crew and a new ship?

Originality in Trek is dead until it's back on TV, when there is more screen time to do original things with.

The first film did just fine at the box office, and the closest thing it had to a high profile actor was Eric Bana. I'd rather they pick someone audiences are less familiar with, who can be excellent (like Ramirez, who is supposed to be terrific in Carlos), than a name who might be less interesting.

Actually, I think several of the main cast are well on the way to becoming pretty big names in their own right, which is not something the other films had going for them aside from Shatner (who had a pretty mixed reputation) and Stewart.

^ I agree. No-one really went to see the last movie because of Eric Bana. And people who just Will Not Go To See A Star Trek Movie won't go to it just because Tom Cruise or Will Smith or whoever is playing a supporting role. Just get the right actor for the role, regardless of star power.

I'd say Bana would have helped the film's performance in Australia.

^^

Eric Bana was the only recognizable actor from the 11th Star Trek film 2 years ago here in South Korea.

Chris Pine and Zoe Saldana were already on a trajectory towards greater fame when the got the roles. Zachary Quinto certainly has the talent to do likewise with or without Star Trek.

He's a little thin for the part, but I suppose a spray tan and a faux chest piece would take care of that. It's not like they haven't done that before.:guffaw:Yep. Looking forward to that.
