I was reading the other day that the average household uses about 70 batteries. That seemed a lot to me but when I started to count them up - remote controls, cameras, torches, clocks, computers etc I realised that my household must be close to that number.

Do you think you use more, less or about the same as this average?

I can think of only 18 in my apartment, between my three roommates and I, and that includes all the sex toys.

About twelve remotes spread throughout the house, two wireless XBox controllers, two Wii controllers with rechargeable batteries, several flashlights, five cameras, three cordless phones with rechargeable batteries, a wireless mouse for my desktop, battery operated cat toys, two smoke and two carbon monoxide detectors, several cordless tools with rechargeable batteries, car alarm keychains, watches, numerous other little gadgets, and spare batteries... So yeah, 70 sounds possible.

My son has other things in his room that would use batteries. I am sure there are some I haven't thought of.

Actually, my roommate is a dominatrix, so there are a fair few in our home!

See, already I missed several things like the additional Wii accessories, wall clocks, laptops, alarm clock backup batteries... A couple Kindles if we're counting those.

Yes, we are including any sort of battery - alkaline, rechargeable, lithium etc.

If asked, without thinking I'd have said I have under 10 in active use. Actually, adding it up and including any kind of battery, it's 26 and I bet I've forgotten some!

I live alone, so in an average family I suspect the figure of 70 is pretty accurate! It's a pretty remarkable figure, but I guess no-one's yet been able to come up with a better form of mobile energy.

Since I was unsure how many are used in a couple of items I just started counting items. Then you sort of expanded the types and, two of us probably come closer than I'd like to think to that 70 number.

I'm somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 or so.

2 alarm clocks
2 cell phones
motherboard battery on the desktop
7 remotes including the controller for the PS3
3 smoke alarms
electric toothbrush
razor
thermostat
car
caller id (4 batteries)
station memory for the stereo
wireless keyboard and mouse (2 batteries each)
2 lanterns (4 batts each)
3 flashlights (2 batts each)

I probably use around 50. Nearly half of those are rechargeables, and I am currently in the process of changing ALL of my batteries over. I hate throwing batteries away...it'll be nice when I don't have to do it all that often (only when a rechargeable goes bad).

My flashlight: 2 batteries (I don't use this daily though, so I'm not sure if it counts)
My girlfriend's walkman: 2 batteries
The smoke detector: one battery.

That's a total of 15 batteries.

Is that considered alot?

Yes, flashlights do count. this thread is about all batteries used not just ones used daily.

I forgot....Most of my Hallmark Star Trek ornaments that I have bought in the last 4 or 5 years take batteries to. Let's be conservative and call that 21 batteries.
