The only way forward for Star Trek

Is a reboot of the Original Series.

A recasting of the Kirk crew and a reintroduction to some of the old foes encountered in the 5 year mission.

Also a tie in to Enterprise, by encountering some Archer enemies, eg Suliban.

Thats my humble opinion, imagine Kirk with enhanced visual effects at his disposal :bolian:

How is this ''going forward''?

No tie-ins to Enterprise required at all. Just a reboot, or series vaguely continuing from ST'09 (in the manner of Stargate/Stargate SG-1)

Oh yeah, and make sure none of Berman's regieme are involved. No more refried TNG!

We have that now, it's working great, welcome to 2009.

Yeah, we're going to get three films out of this cast, and they're not likely to want to tie themselves to a weekly TV series.

You might get away with another crew set in that time period, but I really think you'd have a good chance going back to the Prime timeline and jumping ahead of the TNG era by 50-100 years.

The prime timeline is dead and gone. Only the books and fanfiction will continue it, well, essentially the same thing ones just paid.

So? Did they use the cast from the original MASH movie for the TV series (well, besides Gary Burghoff)?

And shouldn't this be in the Future of Trek forum?

Only in your wildest dreams, sparky.

TOS merchandise sells out, while JJTrek stuff is on clearance at Big Lots. TNG is getting a nice shiny HD makeover. Original continuity novels are still coming out on a fairly regular basis. And if the old timeline is so damn toxic and JJTrek has you creaming your jeans on an hourly basis, riddle he this: Why have Kirk and Spock on the Enterprise in the first place if that period is such a dead fish?

Seems to me that there's plenty of life left in the original timeline.

I would prefer a retro 23rd century series to a third version of TOS, perhaps something set on a space station, a colony, a cargo ship or another heterodox setting.

Taking the Vanguard Station idea from the novels and setting it in the rebooted JJverse would be interesting.

The only way forward is to figure out why CBS would bother doing a Star Trek series at all. Somebody come up with a coherent answer to that one, that addresses: where would it be shown and how can you convince CBS it would appeal to that audience and make money for them there?

Just not on TV or in the theater.

I'd like to see a more grown up Trek. When people die, they stay dead. People lie, cheat, steal, love, cry. Let's get rid of the idealistic 60's and face the future with an eye to a more realistic portrayal of humanity.

I think that the original 23rd century designs look better than the new designs but whoever creates a new Trek series will probably create new designs anyway.
If the creative folks like to tie what they are doing into parts of the fictional history of Trek this is of course fine but they should not be limited to the prime or alternate universe. We need less and not more continuity obsession. After all the purpose of sci-fi ist to extend one's storytelling possibilities.

I want a new Bonanza with all the same character names but a totally different look/feel, where the characters lie and cheat like real people.

Huh?

I think we had the Trek version of that in something called nuBSG.

This comes up again and again in threads. "I want something new called Star Trek that is different from what Star Trek was." I just don't get it.

New wineskins for new wine, said the famous rabbi.

Guys, let's be honest here, the old timeline has been retired as far as movies and tv are concerned. Any future tv series may be based on the new movies, or they may reboot the franchise one more time, but they're not going to grab new audiences by going back to the previous continuity, which will be old news by then.

Seriously, when in the history of Hollywood, has a franchise ever gone back to the old continuity after rebooting itself? Are the Batman movies going to go back to the Tim Burton continuity after the current trilogy is over? Are the Sherlock Holmes movies going to pick up where Basil Rathbone series left off? Is the next Battlestar Galactica series going to be a sequel to Galactica 1980?

That's not how it works. The previous cycle of Trek series is now a beloved part of TV history, like Columbo or Gilligan's Island. It had an amazingly long run, but it's over now. Any new TREK series will be a new adaptation for modern audiences.

If STAR TREK were on HBO.........can you imagine the drug usage? And every character would say the wrong thing at the worst time, just like on every episode of OZ, SIX FEET UNDER and THE SOPRANOS. But at least there'd be no stupid technobabble.

Now that HBO has a first-class fantasy show (GAME OF THRONES), perhaps they'll tackle sci-fi in the near future.

My feeling is that there will eventually be more syndicated TREK shows after the movies peter out......possibly even before. Also, I think it's time they have a KLINGON Captain.
