Is it just me, or are Vulcans a bunch of jerks?

The Federation wasn't created by the 'Balance of Terror'?

The Neutral Zone bases are referred to as "Earth Outposts", the Enterprise as "The Earth Vessel", the war being between the Romulans and "Earth Forces".

Heck, even in "Friday's Child" they call it the "Earth Federation".

TOS was constantly violating Trek continuity!

Vulcans certainly came across as less than stellar in the Enterprise series, and even in the 2009 feature film, but overall I don't think they are jerks or annoying. They are simply intellectuals. They form the backbone-along with humans-of the Federation. That makes them worth tolerating.

Nope. Star Trek, especially in Season One of TOS, is a work in progress. Many ideas were tossed against the wall. A few stuck and some fell off. The ones that stick become "canon" or part of continuity. Sometimes even an idea that stuck gets knocked off by another idea.

Exactly. They were making up the terminology as they went along and the Federation wasn't mentioned for several episodes. Particularly in the first season, the terminology varied from ep to ep: "Space Command," "Vulcanian," "lithium crystals," etc.

Heck, we didn't even know Vulcans were telepathic until "Dagger of the Mind"--despite lots of dialogue about psychic abilities in earlier episodes.

Most of it can be made to work with a little thought, even it the face of later pronouncements.

Space command isn't too bad, Harry Mudd's use of Vulcanian keys in nicely with the Vulcan children's use of "Earther." Lithium for dilthium the same way gas is short for gasoline.

:)

No one is saying you can't "make it work" given a little thought. That's not the point Greg and I were making. We're talking about the process that created Star Trek not the rationalizations that followed.

Heck, there was also that "Spock controls a guy through the wall" thing he never did again.

I recall him doing it twice. Once in Errand of Mercy and again in By Any Other Name (in which a reference is made back to Spock's talent for doing this in Errand of Mercy).

Which doesn't mean that the Federation didn't exist retroactively which is in fact how It came to be. Just because they didn't say it doesn't mean it wasn't there.

Well they referred to Starfleet as UESPA and the only Federation that was referred to during the early episodes was the First Federation of Balok. By the way, I came across an old Christmas ornament that reminded me of the Fesarius. What do you think:

It looks more like a probe or a mine. Do you think Bailey became as sadistic and power crazy as Balok and became a rogue of the First Federation drunk on tranya?

I hope so! That boy needed some character-building. That would make for a great villain in a TOS novel come to think of it!

It wasn't "Errand of Mercy." It was "A Taste of Armageddon."

Yes, that's right! A Taste of Armageddon and By Any Other Name. Thanks!

It would have certainly been handy if he retained that ability. It's more useful than the mind-meld.

The first mention of Starfleet in Court Martial predates the UESPA in Tomorrow is Yesterday by six episodes. Kirk referring to the UESPA as "our authority" could just mean their authority in that (future) section of the Federation. Most fans would agree that there is going to be a United Earth at some point. And the Federation does show up two episodes later.

:)
