Preview of the new Tom Baker Audios

Big Finish does such a solid job making good stories. It'll be fun to have my favorite doctor back. Honestly when/if DW ever ends it's current TV run maybe they can give the BF guys the newer Doctors too. He's done audio stories for the last couple years in a bit of a different tone than BF does but he pretty much sounds the same as he did 30 years ago.

I agree. I'd give a lot to hear Big Finish do stories with the Ninth and Tenth (and one day, the Eleventh) Doctors, but I've pretty well resigned myself to the idea that it'll never happen (of course, I used to think that about Tom Baker doing any more, too)...

^ I don't think there'll be any Ninth stories (at least, not with Chris) but I could definitely imagine David Tennant doing them in a few years.

I'm rather surprised that 23Skiddoo wasn't the first to post this, but I saw it on another forum.

Aww... gee! ;)

Actually I was about to post this: that the second series of Baker stories (which we won't see will 2013) is going to feature Tom paired up with Mary Tamm as Romana (old news there) and reunited with Jago & Litefoot from Talons of Weng-Chiang (new news):

I'm still waiting to see if they manage the impossible and get Tom and Lalla to agree to record some! But I'm sure the folks at BF will be regretting forever the fact it took so long to get Tom into the fold. In his tribute to Elisabeth Sladen in the recent DWM, Nick Briggs confirmed that a Fourth Doctor - Sarah Jane reunion was going to happen and they even got special permission from RTD to do it (I guess because of the TV series Sarah Jane was/is no longer officially available to Big Finish anymore so they had to get a special OK.)

I'm looking forward to hearing the Leela and Romana I stories, but man having the Fourth Doctor travelling with Sarah Jane would have been something to hear.

I didn't really follow CE after he left the show or whatever that was but did he just not like the role?

There's a thousand different versions. The initial reason given was simply that he doesn't like long term roles.

The truth is probably somewhere around:

He doesn't like long term roles and he had major issues with someone in management (but it doesn't appear to have been RTD)

He has vowed not to return to the role for any multi-Doctor events (Though Tom Baker stayed away for 30 years, before finally agreeing a year or so back to do the Audios he is working on, so, maybe some day or some way...)

Well, Tom didn't stay away a full 30 years. He did come back for the first minute of Dimensions in Time - though, given how that turned out, one could hardly blame him for staying away after that! And he did do those couple of TV commercials, and was trying to make a DW movie in the early 90's.

I think it wasn't so much that he didn't ever want to come back than that he was just waiting for the right thing to come along. And eventually, it also became reluctance to coming back after having been gone so long. Tom returning via audio was likely both the result of his friends (those who'd done Big Finish) wearing him down and Tom himself deciding "Hell with it, I'm almost 80, it's now or never."

Jago & Litefoot are a team that needs to return. I will be delighted to hear them with the fourth Doctor once again. They should someday have them together with Vastra and Jenny, too.

I haven't heard any of the Big Finish Jago & Litefoot spinoff series yet but I hear it's quite good. Earlier this year they did a series of episodes featuring the post-Invasion of Time Leela. I love the fact they were able to get the original actors for this. I think they've done about 4 seasons now and the success of that has led to other spinoffs featuring "one-off" characters, such as the upcoming CounterMeasures series featuring the proto-UNIT group featured in Remembrance of the Daleks.

J&L encountering Vastra and Jenny is a great idea. It's a shame BF doesn't have the rights to any new-series characters.

I'm sure Tom probably regrets it more than they will. If he'd said yes one year earlier he'd have done some with Lis, probably one or two with Nick Courtney too.

Now the interesting thing about Romana is Mary appears to have recorded some/if not most of her lines seperately. Notice she's not in the photos with Tom and John Leeson, or Tom, Chris and Trevor.

So in theory there's no reason Tom and Lalla couldn't be put together on the same story.

wow these sound really good! I'll definitely be picking them all up for my iPhone!

My earliest exposure to Doctor Who was actually the Genesis of the Daleks audio book - so to me, this type of thing takes me right back and is the format that I most fondly remember Tom Bakers Doctor from! :)

I'm resisting listening to the preview because I don't want to become overly excited. Only a couple of more weeks to go...! :D

10 minute preview of the first ep+trailers for other eps.

The preview was a lot of fun, Baker and Jameson weres in great form for the audio plays. The preview of 'Wroth of the Iceni' sounds like a fun historical. It is sad to have been so close to getting Tom Baker and Lis Sladen together again, so the chance to hear some other old timers back together before it is too late is wonderful.

I too regret that we could not have either Nick Courtney or Elisabeth Sladen return for audio adventures with the Tom Baker Doctor, as I heard there were indeed plans for both to do a few. But at least we got Leela back and-later on-Romana I!

As for Lalla Ward's Romana II, do we know 100% that they will not work together-her and Tom-or is that fan presumption because they were once married and ended that marriage a short time after?

Put it this way, they have not spoken since then!

Lalla did say she'd be willing, but may have said that knowing Tom never would.

Worth noting he's only even done a commentary on one of her stories for DVD (Armageddon Factor), she has custody of the rest.

So this is the real reason why they never do commentaries together for DVDs and won't, presumably, be doing any audio work together? I want the facts not just speculation.

And the new stories have arrived - they are sitting there in my Big Finish account waiting to be downloaded!

I normally wait for the CD's but I am seriously tempted to download them tonight and have a listen!
