How do you like your Science Fiction/Fantasy Movies?

I have come to the awareness that the type of science fiction/Fantasy/Super Hero movie I liken are ones that are lighthearted fun and entertaining without being too serious.

I figured that was why I could never get past 20 minutes of "Blade Runner" or why I really didn't care for "District 9" despite my recognition of it being a well crafted story.

I am an unashamed special effects junkie that likes a story that doesn't take itself too seriously. Now there are exceptions to the rule...I do like the recent serious tone in the Batman movies but all in all I like the movies that are more fun and entertaining.

I didn't care for the second Transformers movie (even I have my limits) but the new "Battleship" movie looks like a lot of fun. I am a very forgiving movie goer.

Your thoughts?
 
I mix it up. Dumb SF action with lighthearted banter and then something heavy with mind blowing concepts.
 
I like my sci-fi original and with a lot of possibilities.

That, or battered and deep fried, with a slice of lemon on the side and tartar sauce. :D
 
I can also go for things that are fun and light on story, and I do like explosions, but I couldn't forgive Sucker Punch. I think it was missing the fun part. For an extended FX demo, it took itself too seriously, while also unashamedly flashing ass in my face and pretending that's part of the message.

Prior to that, I believe Van Helsing was the one I was most embarrassed about paying for. And with that one it took as little as hearing the out of place Spanish guitar soundtrack to just completely toss me out of the film, and realize that this was time I couldn't get back.

So I guess I need a modicum of story, character development, and real peril to fool me into caring, otherwise watching a movie is not a distraction, it's a chore.

ETA: funny you should mention District 9, 'cause there's a movie during which I slept through the half-hour action-intensive portion near the end, and still think it's fucking awesome.
 
I like a well done adventure with characters that have enough depth/characterization to register as people, or the deep, heavy stuff.

I've a small allowance for the dumb blow 'em up stuff. A small one, but they do have a place.
 
With fava beans and a nice Chianti...

A combo of good action and character development is what I usually go for. Or something mindless and cliched. It depends on my mood. Sometimes I just wanna watch shit blow up.

The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms is one of my favorites. I will try and give Blade Runner another try...I just hope it gets better after the first 20 minutes.

Give me Gritty/Dystopian/Dark Sci-Fi every single time.
 
I'd like to see more movies along the lines of Gattaca, or more broadly, Contact or Minority Report (setting aside the drawbacks of those movies, I'm not trying to start a fight on that topic here) - movies that aren't so wholly dependent on action for their appeal.

I'd also love to see more "artistic" type movies a la Blade Runner (the director's cut, not the botched version they originally released in the theaters), but that may be a dangerous wish, since it would be easier for that approach to be pretentious twaddle than successful.

And I'd like to see more faithful adaptations of Philip K. Dick novels and stories, such as Through A Scanner Darkly (I do realize that I've mentioned two less-than-faithful examples in this very post, but I want everything, okay? :D)

I'd love to see someone tackle Solaris yet again, but this time take advantage of advances in SFX to actually depict all the crazy-ass stuff in the novel. Third time's the charm.

None of the foregoing means that I'll refuse to see Avatar II in 3D on opening day. incidentally. But I figure that kind of movie is a given.
