The problem is, it isn't 40 years ago, and I doubt there's a filmmaker with the cojones to give it a go.

Yeah, can't see Harrison Ford as playing gruff. Cantankerous maybe, but not gruff. I don't find he puts enough investment in his characters these days, and even in interviews he comes across disinterested and emotionally distant.
Ben Kingsley just got cast as Mazer Rackham. Which works for me, he was superb in Searching for Bobby Fischer as a teacher of youngsters.
The only OSC scifi I've read was the first Homecoming book, which was fun, I dunno why the rest of them dropped off my radar. As far as the Enderverse, I looked it up, and the aliens are colloquially referred to as Buggers. Now, is this because they look like bugs, or is there also an anal-probing reference in there?
They look like insects. You should definitely read "Ender's Game." It's a fantastic book. It is, in fact, my favorite book, and the only book I have ever read in one sitting.
Speaker is the only book I've read in one sitting. I almost got through Order of the Phoenix once, but I zonked with about 80 pages left.
"Speaker" is just as good as "Ender's Game," but Ender wins out for me just because of how excited I got from reading it. No book had ever had that effect on me before. And now they teach it in high schools. It's on the "required reading" shelf at book stores all the time.
This article says that Ender's Game is intended to be released in March 2013. March? That doesn't sound like the studio has great expectations for it. I was hoping for a big-budget summer release. At least it's not January, which would be a really bad sign. By the way, that article I linked says that Stilston is to be played by Brendan Meyer, if anyone is interested.
March is the new May for movies. Ender's producers probably do not want to compete with all the mega-budget flicks that rule the summer. I wonder who they'll get to play Bean.
It never ceases to amaze me how we squander significant fractions of our miserably short lives awaiting not just the release, but even the production of individual Hollywood movies. And I'm as guilty of it as anyone.
True I followed the production of Game Of Thrones since the day the acquisition of the adaptation rights by HBO was announced by George R.R. Martin. It was fun following the casting announcements, waiting for the first pictures, first footage and so on ...
It's an intimate character piece, sort of like a disturbing Speilberg movie but I wonder how soon after 'Starship Troopers' will come out afterwards with a war with alien bugs. I wonder if MI will mop up after all.
A couple of the real hurdles to making this movie involves getting kids of the right age who can play the parts and the way the kids' ages advance through the course of the movie. I saw a suggestion somewhere that the movie be animated rather than live action in order to overcome these problems. That might work, but I'm not quite convinced just yet. Perhaps putting James Cameron on it and having him do it something like Avatar could work. I'm not quite convinced yet, but maybe. The one thing I'm most afraid of with this movie being made is that they'll try to make it a kid's movie. For some reason, in the last couple of decades, the movie studios/book publishers/other producers of media have decided that the age of the protagonist is the age of the target audience. Even though Ender is a kid, I wouldn't say that Ender's Game is a story for kids. There are too many things in there that would be disturbing for kids, and many of the themes and discussions in the book are beyond a child's ability to appreciate. (The same goes for the Hunger Games series. Those books are marketed to tweens and teens, but they're not really appropriate for kids of that age, especially Mockingjay, but that's another discussion.) Anyway, I worry that the studios will try to make it for kids, which will ruin it.
