Is Stargate dead... forever?

I wouldn't be surprised if they just remade the movie sometime in the future. They could even try to make it a pseudo-prequel/reboot type thing like Trek '09.

I don't see how there's much room for a prequel, given that in the original movie we see how the characters meet for the first time.

SG1 and TNG are examples of such. It's not really a cop show, not even a cop show in space, but almost.
SG1 just replaces policing with a military angle, but the SG1 team polices the galaxy to protect Earth, so essentially it's a cop show.

TNG's format has been run into the ground and is no longer viable.
SG1 and TNG have the same style and format. I always thought the SGC was like the Enterprise spaceship, while beaming down was like using the stargate (and visiting a new or already known planet).

Those 2 series are very close to one another. Almost the same thing beside the tone.

Yeah, I already said there's a market for episodic cop show style sci fi on SyFy. Probably the only place on cable where that format will fly. But that market is being served without the expense of space opera. If you can do that sort of show on Earth, why go to space?

You could get away with doing TNG on SyFy. TNG's format is no longer viable on network TV, which is where TNG used to be shown - that's the combo that's not going to fly anymore (as Terra Nova is now demonstrating). The obstacle to doing TNG on SyFy is the cost and whether the owners of the Star Trek franchise would see that as a devaluing of the brand.

I'm surprised the remake of Alien Nation didn't happen, actually. It would seem, at first glance, to be a perfect fit for the cop show mixed with science fiction angle that the network seems to love, especially lately.

Didn't happen? Is it dead? I thought that was a possible Pilot for future? I only heard about it in the last month or so? Bummer, I recently watched the TV Movies, and am preaparing to re-watch the Series soon, and have been wanting them to take another stab at Alien Nation for some time now.

Tim Minear was said to be working on it in June of 2009. Since then, nothing has been heard about the project. I'd say two and a half years of no news means it isn't going to be made.

I would guess, if anything it would have to take off from where Atlantis left off or at least some time in the future where Earth's best have been working to unlock the city and have developed methods of creating sufficient power to traverse the galaxy(es). I would hate to have a reboot.

BUmmer, missed out on that one :(

For one, you're not the one who will decide what is good now for TV or what isn't. Heavily serialized TV shows are great but weekly missions/adventure/mystery oriented show are popular too. They usually also got some serialized elements in them. Like TNG and SG1 had. The most well known is Data's quest to become human or the ongoing story with the Goauld.

Terra Nova is not even remotely close in quality and diversity of plots to those shows. I don't watch Terra Nova since about the fourth episode (maybe I'll come back to it later on). Anyway it's not all about style and format. Most often than not its about writing, the dialogues, the stories and the characters. So there's no crazy rules about what can and cannot be on TV like you seems to imply.

What I know is that I would love to see some shows on TV like SG1 with more weekly mission oriented adventures.

Don't get me wrong, I like heavily serialized TV too. Rome, Game of Thrones, Spartacus, The Tudors, almost in order, were all great series to me. The second season of Game of Thrones will probably be great. While I stopped watching the Walking dead since the start of the second season because I was bored with it. It's always the same thing.

The backstory of the mythology goes back millions of years. It would be easy to do a prequel on the multitude of events that happened before the series continuity starts, it would just never appeal to a casual/new audience.

Like you are? :rommie:

All you have to do is look at what's going on with TV. The episodic stuff is on broadcast, where sci fi doesn't survive very long. Sci fi (and fantasy) works much better on cable, where serialized formats are the norm. Figure it out.

What I know is that I would love to see some shows on TV like SG1 with more weekly mission oriented adventures.
If by that you mean a space opera series, we'd be lucky just to get any space opera series, nevermind being fussy about the details like format or tone.

But there are episodic cop shows and in fact also episodic sci fi shows (but not space opera) on TV right now.

While I stopped watching the Walking dead since the start of the second season because I was bored with it.
It's breaking cable ratings records, and therefore cable execs who might be thinking about a sci fi series of any sort are likely to think of mimicking that show. Any winner that breaks from the pack like that gets a lot of attention.

SyFy might not use TWD as a model since they already have a successful model - the sf/f cop show, often with comedic overtones. But whether they would meld that style to space opera is another question entirely. That was the Stargate model and they ran it into the ground.

I hope it isn't dead I am hopeful it will be brought back in some form that will bridge the old fans with the new fans

Some Sci-Fi can survive on Broadcast, maybe not so much in the US but it can and does in other countries. Take Doctor Who for example. It's generally shown in what is one of the best slots in the week (in the UK at least, Saturdays at around 19:00). Yes I realise that the way the BBC is funded is different than an advert funded network. But it still has to justify it's cost, it's not like the BBC has a bottomless pit of money to fund :-

See, that always seems to me to be the argument in favour of the license fee...for £165 we get all that provided for us!

The TOS/TNG format is the only Trek format that works - as soon as they deviated from it, ratings plunged.

Rebooting the 1994 movie is the way to go, for Stargate.

I doubt we will see Stargate again, I don't believe it has the fanbase size in North America or the cult classic buzz like BSG had behind it to bring it back.

Broadcast TV in the UK is not really comparable to broadcast TV in the US, let alone broadcast TV that is funded via tax. The competition in the US is extreme, new episodes of Dr Who were pulling in similar numbers to SG-1 reruns on Sci-Fi.

It'll get re-made, it's just a matter of time. I think the smart thing would be to re-make the original movie, either theatrically or as a tv mini-series. Worry about doing a new series based on the movie.

Seeing as how other TV shows have come back from the "dead" it's possible that Stargate can do the same, I'd wouldn't count Stargate out.
