I wouldn't be surprised if they just remade the movie sometime in the future. They could even try to make it a pseudo-prequel/reboot type thing like Trek '09.
SG1 and TNG have the same style and format. I always thought the SGC was like the Enterprise spaceship, while beaming down was like using the stargate (and visiting a new or already known planet).SG1 just replaces policing with a military angle, but the SG1 team polices the galaxy to protect Earth, so essentially it's a cop show.SG1 and TNG are examples of such. It's not really a cop show, not even a cop show in space, but almost.
TNG's format has been run into the ground and is no longer viable.
Those 2 series are very close to one another. Almost the same thing beside the tone.
Didn't happen? Is it dead? I thought that was a possible Pilot for future? I only heard about it in the last month or so? Bummer, I recently watched the TV Movies, and am preaparing to re-watch the Series soon, and have been wanting them to take another stab at Alien Nation for some time now.I'm surprised the remake of Alien Nation didn't happen, actually. It would seem, at first glance, to be a perfect fit for the cop show mixed with science fiction angle that the network seems to love, especially lately.
BUmmer, missed out on that oneTim Minear was said to be working on it in June of 2009. Since then, nothing has been heard about the project. I'd say two and a half years of no news means it isn't going to be made.
For one, you're not the one who will decide what is good now for TV or what isn't. Heavily serialized TV shows are great but weekly missions/adventure/mystery oriented show are popular too. They usually also got some serialized elements in them. Like TNG and SG1 had. The most well known is Data's quest to become human or the ongoing story with the Goauld.SG1 and TNG have the same style and format. Yeah, I already said there's a market for episodic cop show style sci fi on SyFy. Probably the only place on cable where that format will fly. But that market is being served without the expense of space opera. If you can do that sort of show on Earth, why go to space?
You could get away with doing TNG on SyFy. TNG's format is no longer viable on network TV, which is where TNG used to be shown - that's the combo that's not going to fly anymore (as Terra Nova is now demonstrating). The obstacle to doing TNG on SyFy is the cost and whether the owners of the Star Trek franchise would see that as a devaluing of the brand.
I don't see how there's much room for a prequel, given that in the original movie we see how the characters meet for the first time.
Like you are?For one, you're not the one who will decide what is good now for TV or what isn't.
If by that you mean a space opera series, we'd be lucky just to get any space opera series, nevermind being fussy about the details like format or tone. What I know is that I would love to see some shows on TV like SG1 with more weekly mission oriented adventures.
It's breaking cable ratings records, and therefore cable execs who might be thinking about a sci fi series of any sort are likely to think of mimicking that show. Any winner that breaks from the pack like that gets a lot of attention. While I stopped watching the Walking dead since the start of the second season because I was bored with it.

Some Sci-Fi can survive on Broadcast, maybe not so much in the US but it can and does in other countries. Take Doctor Who for example. It's generally shown in what is one of the best slots in the week (in the UK at least, Saturdays at around 19:00). Yes I realise that the way the BBC is funded is different than an advert funded network. But it still has to justify it's cost, it's not like the BBC has a bottomless pit of money to fund :-
