The greatest example of 'Shatnerian' speech was in 'Errand of Mercy'

Re: The greatest example of 'Shatnerian' speech was in 'Errand of Merc

My favorite Kirk "speech," if that's what it is, is in the final scene of "A Taste Of Armageddon." The music plays a good part in this, and Shatner's more thoughtful and understated than when Kirk is addressing a group in some official/diplomatic capacity or trying to talk reason to an adversary.

In fact it's one of my favorite closing scenes from TOS. A lot of what I like about the characters and their interplay as well as the style of the series is in it.

My post wasn't so much about 'favorite' as much as it was about Shatner's 'clipped and pause' delivery style.

This is a good example of why "STAR TREK" stands head and shoulders above the rest of its follow-ons...

The writers of TOS were more writerly than later Treks, generally, though Sisko had his moments. I like writerly myself. Fitzgerald over Hemingway, if that makes any sense.

"Risk is our business," wot wot.

Shatner reading the Constitution. Glorious.

Normal people who could still went to the theater back then. They knew Albee at that time, say, and had grown up hearing Tennessee Williams or O'Neill or whatever. I pick up old life magazines and they'll have a features on a new Broadway play (and not even a musical!) We're in a much more naturalistic, mundane mode of language now. I can't read modern fiction, it is so, well, prosaic in its style, no pun intended.

But that's me; to each his own. That's why we're aboard her.

It's brief, but my fave example is the dramatic pause contest in Conscience of the King:

Karidian: "Have you gotten... everything you wanted... Captain Kirk?"
Kirk: "If I had gotten... everything I wanted... youmightnotleavethisroomalive."

One of the most rediculous speeches he ever made.

But if someone is going to make the Constitution sound good, I guess it makes sense that a Canadian spoke it. ;)

:guffaw::guffaw: That's a good one also!

All good examples. Another would be in the episode "Miri" when Kirk is imploring the children to give him the communicators.

"Andyourgonna be...JUST LIKE THEM"

I would think the best Shatnerisms in "Errand of Mercy" were both times when Kirk was berating the Organians.

The "feed a thousand where one was fed before" exchange with Ayleborne was a great example, and also when Kirk was joined by Kor. ("to destroy life on a plantery scale" moment, one of the best ironic moments in any TREK series)

As for "Taste", Kirk's speeches to Anan 7, especially the "we're not going to kill... today" really stand out for their Shatnerisms.

I was talking to a friend once about Shat's delivery style and we started wondering if he and Adam West hung out a lot. You could almost put West in the command chair and Shat in the bat suit and nothing would have changed for either show.

'Feed a thousand....' was the exact phrase that generated the post.
