DC's New 52: Reviews and Discussion (Spoilers welcolme and likely)

We are getting an all new, and 5th by my count I think, Ray in December via a mini-series.

Well-known for their run on the critically-acclaimed ALL-STAR WESTERN for DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, co-writers Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti are now shining a light on another classic DC Comics character – THE RAY.

In a four-issue miniseries coming in December, Lucien Gates is transformed into a human ray of light by a mysterious beam of energy, and he takes on the identity of The Ray – much to the chagrin of his girlfriend.

I guess instead of sticking with Stan Silver who was on the short lived Freedom Fighters series pre-nu52 they've decided an all new Ray reboot. I think having Silver would've been nice cause it ties back to characters like Uncle Sam in the way the Mr.Terrific title straddles ties to JSA.

The Ray mini-series was first announced back in Sep I believe. It's only recently that details have surfaced. This change doesn't surprise me.

I bought the first three issues of Red Hood and the Outlaws last week, when online reviews seemed to indicate that the initial reactions (to Starfire) were possibly misplaced. I read them today. Actually pretty entertaining, and does seem as though Starfire has an agenda of her own, that her memories do work differently but she's not "swiss cheese" as several reviewers thought at the time. The book implies there were at least two incarnations of the Titans (Roy's and Kori's), and that Azar exists and has some connection to the All-Caste. Is Essence a new character? Or is she supposed to be Raven?

Like with the end of Catwoman #1 there was a colossal overreaction to Starfire lol. Red Hood has been okay but I'm not really feeling it. It is clear that Winnick loves writing Jason Todd and has chosen to make him the star of the book, as well he should, but I don't think he is doing a good job of integrating Kori and Roy. There's a lot we don't know about Roy yet or Kori but has only been teased so far while we're focusing on Jason. The art is pretty good though.

I like slacker Roy. The scene with Killer Croc is pretty good - it would be cliched coming from anyone but a giant humanoid crocodile, of course.

Your pulls for tomorrow?

Mine:

Aquaman
The Dark Knight
Superman
(non-DC) TMNT #4 (I believe it comes out tomorrow, at least.)

In the end, the "sexy teases" of the number ones was a smart business move that paid off for DC. People checked out the comics and then came back for issue two and now, it seems, three.

Indeed, I picked up Catwoman #1 out of curiosity of the titillation factor and actually ended up liking the comic as a whole and have stuck with it.

Aquaman and All-Star Western. Possibly I, Vampire (picking up 2 and 3).

Edit to add Justice League Dark.
