Is Stargate dead... forever?

Devlin is still itching to finish his trilogy, maybe Spyglass won't have the same attitude towards him has MGM? I hope they do though, personally.
you mean a trilogy of arc and continuum? was it going to be SG1 or SGA?

No, the guy who made the original Stargate movie wanted it to be the first of a trilogy. The TV show(s) and movies have nothing to do with it.

The version that existed for the most part under Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper is certainly dead, but I wouldn't be surprised if a remake in the form of a film series arose in the next 5-10 years.

Russell and Spader are probably too old to play action heroes at this point -- at least, too old for a major studio to back them in a sequel to the original movie. That would have been fun to see, but, like the TV version of the concept, it's likely too late to see any follow-up.

Ironically because of the time lapse that was going to be part of the story of the trilogy, Spader and Russell are now the right ages...

Dean Devlin's sequel which ignores the TV continuity is unlikely to happen. Keep in mind, the only reason anyone still cares about the original Stargate movie is because of the TV shows. Or because of SG-1 anyway.

If Stargate were ever revived, it would have some connection to SG-1. Even if it were say a remake of the original movie, it would likely include Carter as part of the team sent through, and Teal'c would probably be Ra's First Prime (or Apophis would be the villain instead of Ra). Hell. they might even decide to have General Hammond instead of General West.

Probably as much of a connection as old and new BSGs did - just the basic premise and some proper nouns. And that's all they'd need. It might have even less of a connection. Why bother with characters named Carter and Teal'c? I'd like to see them make a clean break: start with the basic premise, and build from there.

Coincidentally, I pulled the film out the other night and watched it for the first time in several years. It's still pretty good on it's own merits.

Remakes usually have characters with the same names as the original, so it stands to reason that Jack O'Neill (or I guess it would be O'Neil) and Daniel Jackson would be there. The original movie didn't exactly have an abundance of female characters, Sha're being the most prominent, and she was subervient to the point of being given away to a husband. That's not going to fly too well with today's audiences, in fact I'm surprised it didn't upset anyone back in 1994. So the movie would likely have an ass-kicking female US military officer part of the team sent through the gate and why name her anything other than Samantha Carter? And really, at this point with three characters from the original SG-1 cast everyone's going to ask "where's Teal'c?" so he should be included just so things don't look weird.

Most of the audience for a theoretical remake won't have ever heard of Teal'c.

The brand name is well known enough, and the characters obscure enough, that they could do a remake without having to re-imagine any of them, and could basically just take the concept and run with it.

It's unlikely they would go the spin off route now. I know people think that SGU killed the franchise, but the numbers for all three series were on a fairly consistent downward trend since Atlantis premièred. Even SGU's première numbers were pretty underwhelming despite it being promoted as an action adventure, which suggests the market isn't really there to begin with, regardless of SGU's lack of mass appeal. I don't predict any new Stargate in the short term, they'll wait a while until it feels fresh again, but even then, it'll likely only be a reboot or a continuation of the movie trilogy.

I could definitely see something of an SG1 style reboot. They could cut out all the filler, have the Goa'uld be more menacing, the Tok'ra play a larger role, and I would probably drop or change the concept of the Jaffa. Those storylines always bored me to tears.

I think there's a serious unmet hunger for space opera out there that could support a Stargate spinoff, or a new BSG spinoff (either based on RDM's series or the original), Robert Hewitt Wolfe's proposed series, a new Star Trek series, or whatever.

But sci fi fans are damn picky so it would need to hit the sweet spot - something you can respect and take seriously, like nuBSG, but less offputtingly whiny and navel gazing. Something with enough character development to be meaningful, but not at the expense of a hefty dose of straightforward alien-fighting action. And no cutsiness or campiness - that would kill it dead.

Where the Stargate series went wrong is that you couldn't really respect the quality, except maybe early on, and even then, it always came off as a weak imitation of Star Trek. But nuBSG got a little too annoying with its self-indulgent waa-waa-waa routine, and also lost viewers.

Cut out the Replicators and have a well written version of the Ancients and the reboot could be pretty good.

That's also a good reason why they can re-imagine the characters and the situation and come up with something that is unrecognizable from the previous series.

A new creative team is going to want to put their stamp on things. That argues against resurrecting Carter and Teal'c, even though the character types are perfectly good - ass-kicking warrior woman, "noble savage" alien - and could be recycled to good effect. Maybe they'll bring them back and give them new names and biographies. Maybe the "noble savage" alien can be female, combining the two archetypes.

If it comes back I hope it's closer to the format that made SG1 and Atlantis popular.

I preferred the plot diversity of those shows and it had more sci-fi element and allegory. Also more stuff happening in each episodes. With the advance in CGI shows with the format of SG1 and TNG can be so great.

^I hope that if or when it comes back, they try to do something different from SG1 or Atlantis. I loved SG1, but what killed Atlantis for me was that they were trying so very hard to be SG1 and it just wasn't working IMO. I'm all for another light-hearted, fun show, but they need to make it different too. They can't go back to the same well with new characters and hope for the best.

I undestand what you are saying. For me what I like in SG1 and Atlantis is not the light hearted factor. Even if it was great. It's really the plots diversity and the sci-fi/action/adventure aspect and the Sci-fi allegory with some intelligence.

I would truly love a show like SG1 but a bit more gritty or with a serious tone but with as many crazy diversified adventures involving many aliens species and twisted Sci-fi adventures and mystery.

SGU episode like Time, Trial and Error and Epilogue were pretty good. They had both a original stories and a more serious tone.

But more alien planets and civilizations/culture/adventures would be more than welcome too in such gritty Sci-fi TV series.

yea, i think so too. the scenes where the soldiers are in the temple and are facing the jaffa in the beginning are great.
