Starfleet Is Clueless About the Military

To "go back" to something usually mean you've left it. Not just taking a vacation.

KIRK: Antonia! ...What are you talking about? ...The future? This is the past. ...This is nine years ago.
(Kirk gets a broken pair of spectacles out of a box)
KIRK: ...The day I told her I was going back to Starfleet.

I don't know. I can see that meaning either. He's been on vacation with Antonia. They've discussed getting married, settling down, having a family. Then, he finally decides that he can't do that. So he goes and tells her, "Antonia, I can't settle down. I have to go back to Starfleet. It's where I belong." That works for me.

Is there anything in Generations that actually says the stuff with Antonia happened during a retirement? Isn't it possible that Kirk got together with Antonia while still in Starfleet, then he took a shore leave to spend some time with her, and she tried to convince him to leave Starfleet and settle down with her. The scene in the cabin where he goes to tell her he's "going back to Starfleet" would then mean he's telling her he's decided not to retire.

Seems like a reasonable possibility. After all, Kirk was still schlepping around in uniform, which is not something I personally would associate with retirement. Possibly he was on "extended" or "indefinite" leave", or even some kind of "long service" thing. In TOS, he did tend to skip leaves except practically at gunpoint, after all.

Maybe he had met Antonia first, decided to burn up some of those leave credits he had been accruing for over thirty years (suggesting in itself that she was quite some lady), whilst deciding on his future. Various possibilities exist.

Wrong Starfleet
They shut down Starfleet and opened a totally new space force which just happened to also be called Starfleet, headquarted in the same place, with the same ranks, the same positions, the same ships, the same uniform colour-coding....?

Give me a break.
Obviously they used the United Earth Starfleet as the template for the United Federation of Planets Starfleet.

Exactly. The idea that the United Earth Starfleet is the same legal institution as the Federation Starfleet, even if it inherited many of the same ships and facilities, is ludicrous. It by definition cannot be the same legal entity if it serves a different state.

By the same token, the Massachusetts State Navy (founded in 1775, before the colonies even declared independence) is not the same legal institution as the United States Navy (founded in 1794) just because they both happen to have the word "Navy" in their names.

As I said, he'd have to leave Starfleet first.
Uhm... didn't I just address that? Let me be clearer... I disagree. I reject your assertion. I think your conclusions are false. :)

I don't think he would have to leave Starfleet in order for him to say "I told her I was going back to Starfleet." I think that would be a fairly common way to phrase it had he CONSIDERED leaving Starfleet for her while on leave and then decided that he couldn't. Therefore, he wasn't going to stay with her, he was going to go BACK to Starfleet. Seems pretty straightforward to me.

Agreed. Ron Moore, BTW, did acknowledge that it seemed odd for Kirk to be hanging around his cabin making breakfast while wearing his uniform, but that they decided to overlook that because they wanted the two captains to meet in uniform.

Maybe Antonia likes it when he wears his uniform. ;)

As for whether or not Kirk retired, maybe he just left active service and transferred to the reserves (assuming Starfleet has reserves) as part of a plan to gradually move back into civilian life. But then he decided he wasn't quite ready, so he transferred back to active duty. I imagine it would be easier to do that than to retire and then unretire.

I just assumed the Nexus left you wearing the same clothes you had on when you entered. After all, why would Picard be wearing his uniform while spending time with his family on Christmas morning? And before anyone points out that Kirk was wearing a jacket on the Enterprise but a vest in the Nexus, you do see his jacket draped over a log when he was chopping wood. I guess despite the many things the Nexus can do for you, it can't change your clothes. Even if it did give Picard his comm badge back.

seven?

jeez and in Britain we make do with three!

Army, Navy, Air Force...so much simpler...

Technically we have more than 3 -

The Royal Marines and Royal Fleet Auxiliary are technically part of the Navy, but practically operate seperately - similarly with the SAS! The army operates its own air corps...as does the navy...we have a civilian navy in the form of the merchant fleet...

=p

The SAS is an Army regiment under the UK Special Forces command, it, like the Army Air Corps, is part of the British Army. The Fleet Air Arm and Royal Marines are part of the Navy. those are no more seperate services than any other branch of the Army, like the Royal Logistical Corps, the Royal Signals, the REME, the Household Cavalry or the Red Arrows aren't seperate from the RAF.

the Merchant Fleet is not a military force. and iirc, the RFA is part of the RN, just like the RN Reserves or the TA are part of the Army and the RAF Reserves are part of the RAF.
