This is the first property optioned by the newly-formed Syfy Films. It's a feature film unit bearing the Syfy name. Distribution will likely be handled by Universal Pictures. The films made under this banner should be way above the very low standard of Syfy's TV movies.
Syfy mostly just buys low budget pictures that have already been made to air. This should be a step above as others have mentioned. I'm not familiar with the series, but it looks interesting.
I'd be worried if they were doing this as a series for the Syfy channel, because it's a similar premise to Alphas in a way, and that might imply a lack of faith in that show. But fortunately that's not the case. As OOMVM said (and this bears repeating to counter the inevitable confusion), this is a feature film, not a TV series, and it's being made for theatrical release, not for the Syfy channel (although that channel would probably get first dibs on the TV rights after it's had its run in theaters). It's just being made by a new production company that has the same corporate owner as Syfy and is sharing the brand name. (So the thread title should probably be changed to something more accurate.)
I remember reading a couple of the Wild Cards books way back when the series was new. Man, that was a long time ago -- it started in 1987. I recall having mixed feelings about it, but I guess that's to be expected from a shared-universe anthology series. It certainly took a while for it to get to the screen, but I guess stuff from George R. R. Martin is in demand now that Game of Thrones is a hit. It's cool that they're getting Melinda Snodgrass to write it; that should give it more authenticity than a lot of novel adaptations.

I read the first six books before I lost track of it (although I'm pretty sure I actually own them all). I liked them quite a bit, especially the historical stories, so I'm a bit excited to hear of a movie. I hope they start at the beginning.

Well, remember, most of the books weren't novels, but anthologies. As Wikipedia puts it:
I think it's likely that the movie will be built around the core concept of the universe, some of its major characters, and some of its key events, but will put them together into a new story.
That refreshed my memory. I have the books in my library. Might have break them out.
I'm thinking possibly an anthology style with character crossover like Pulp Fiction and Sin City.
I prefer the anthology style, so that would be fine with me.
