The Old You

Smirnoff Ice. Tastes just like regular lemonade.

Then why not drink regular lemonade? I'm guessing it's cheaper.

Because some people like how alcohol makes them feel. If you're not into that, you shouldn't be drinking. Some people also like the taste of certain alcoholic beverages, and a lot of times these are acquired tastes but people genuinely grow to like them.

I love Smirnoff Ice. I'd have one a week or so. Until I went on meds that meant having less than 1/4 bottle made me feel like total s**t. Hubby came home, I told him he could finish the bottle, and all he said was, "I told you, you can't have alcohol anymore." but he didnt tell me I'd so damn awful. Holiday dinners with his family, I can have about a shot glass amount of moscato, a sweet dessert wine.

/\ But it's not modest either..

The old me?..Good question, I don't drive as fast as I used to..
I feel there is time for everything now.. Not as ambitious, nor as insufferable..

Life's too short for modesty. I'm wonderful. That's all there is to it.:bolian:

But you did remind me of something, like you, I'm not as ambitious as I used to be either.

There is no "old me", unless you count the fact that I've mellowed with age (somewhat).

The fact is, I was wonderful when I was younger, and I'm still wonderful.

No, that's not hyperbole.

I agree with RandyS, I still feel wonderful ~ old or newer me.

But I feel more ambitious now, as if I hear the ticking clock.

I feel some sense of 'you really should achieve something'...

Immodesty can be annoying as well, so blow that trumpet. As far as achievements go, I'm good at my job, make a decent living and have a beautiful daughter; that's just fine by me.

On the alcohol thing I've been intoxicated a few times, but I don't have a high tolerance and being drunk/high is only fun for so long. If there was pill you could take to turn it off then I'd be more likely to partake, but as it stands I never imbibe.

Agreed. I like the little warm feeling I get (I drink lightly). Plus, I like the taste of some beers.

Do you like any bitter foods? Chocolate, coffee, marmalade, olives, etc, etc?

Chocolate (though not exceptionally dark), sure. The rest not really.

My most sincere condolences on your loss. ;)

I fall into the latter group, though I have to admit it didn't take much acquiring before I realised I liked them! :)

I'm not actually interested in the effects of alcohol on me in terms of intoxication, but the flavour profile of a good drink is delightful. Certain alcoholic drinks (wine, to a lesser extent beer and some cocktails) have a layer of complexity that I don't think can be found in non-alcoholic drinks. That's not to say I dislike the effect of a glass or two on me... but any more than that and I do. And it's certainly not the reason I like a drink; I just love the taste of a good glass of wine.

I actually like most of the things on that list: olives, chocolate with up to %80 cocoa mass, coffee (though it has to be espresso/Turkish/Bedouin and very sweet) and marmalade (though I don't know what you're using - I have yet to have a Scottish marmalade that had any detectable bitterness in it from the peel). Yet I still find the taste of alcohol repellant.

I think that stems from having a grandfather who responded to my grade school curiosity about his occasional beer, whisky or cigarette by promptly letting me have some as a kind of avoidance therapy - which actually worked. I can choke down wine if I have to, but otherwise it has to be an alcopop or I can't stand the stuff.

My Uncle did the same thing with me and chewing tobacco when I was 8. I will never, ever, ever, ever chew tobacco in my life, I guarantee it.

^^ I was at my Brother's wedding yesterday and one of his friends slipped my 13-year-old nephew a spiked drink. He nearly spewed. :guffaw:

Twisted Tea. You can't taste alcohol at all. There's another brand of hard tea, which I can't remember the name of right now, where you can taste the alcohol. It's not so good.

True, I forgot about that. I don't drink lemonade often, but that is good. I also found some hard cider last Halloween that was delicious, but I forget the brand name. Maybe I can find some today....

I haven't touched neat Jack Daniels since a particularly heavy session back in uni. Same with neat vodka. These aversions are now heavily ingrained into my psyche.

My grandmother tried that with coffee, I think. Didn't work, though my grandad used the same idea with my mother and ci8garettes. Fortunately that worked.

I had one of those drinking Yukon Jack with beer chasers. Of course, this may have had more to do with the fact that we did six of these shots in an hour than anything else....ehich should teach me never to play drinking games with anything more than beer/wine.

I had proper alcohol poisoning once (thankfully not the kind requiring a 911-call) and it was awful. One of the few times I've honestly wished for death. Instead it was just getting up to puke for hours instead of sleeping. That also kind of puts a damper on the drinking to get drunk concept for me.

^Been there in my youth, with the famous last words of "I'll never do that again!" on more occasions than I care to remember.

Drank a bit excessively in my youth. Then I found myself just not needing it. I was done with all of that by my late twenties.

I still drink socially, like the occasional beer or ale, only drink high end liquor when I want something stronger, and hardly drink at all at home. I probably average 3 drinks a month maybe. Not my thing anymore.

And it's funny because when I'm with my "old friends" I get reminded about how much the "old me" drank like a fish. I'm fine with because I like the new me. And I don't miss feeling like shit the morning after!

I like being drunk at times. Tipsy, buzzed, sober, trashed, I've enjoyed them all. I think it's more about being in a good mood and a good state of mind than anything else. That and being with the right people.

I've never much of a drinker back in the days, but I started drinking with my Mexican friends and boy can I drink.

It's great that you are more open to these things. Often time, when you ignore your feelings and desires it becomes problematic later down the roads. Just like when you are learning how to fight in the military...you can't ignore the possibilities that you can get hurt or even killed. You become more afraid if you ignore you fear instead of accepting it... You won't fight well as a result. You can't fight millions of years of instincts that we have developed... If you do, you'd end up with mental problems, like a nervous breakdown. Just be sure you don't go overboard and have too much fun and then getting someone hurt because that's not cool...or getting yourself hurt. Make sure you do it in safe manners! :techman:

Right now I don't drink because I'm on my meds....

Totally agree. Some of the best nights of my life involved a pretty heavy amount of alcohol. I may not need it to have fun, but that doesn't mean I need to avoid it at all costs.

Well, in the past 8 months I've quit smoking cigarettes, smoking pot, and drinking. I don't miss either of them one bit. So goodbye old me :)

Yeah, some people can't drink in moderation...but smoking is worse than drinking, so I wouldn't touch it. Maybe I'll have a few cigars here and there, but nothing frequent.

Oooh, made a rather silly typo there didn't I? Anyways, I don't miss any of those things I listed.
