Deanna Troi on DS9?

Why does everybody hate Troi?? Because she was the ship's counselor and not the captain?? Granted, she wasn't my favorite character either, but I never hated her. And, it's not like she's Trip (thank GOD for that!)

What? I don't get it.

Troi in DS9? I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.

The same thing happened to me- Counselor Obvious is the person DS9 certainly did not need. But it would be interesting to see her unsuccessful attempts to counsel our favourite crewmen. Btw., Odo would be her stepfather from fourth season on, wouldn't he?

Cos she, if we do not look at her certain physical qualities, brings nothing to the story. She almost never says anything, what we do not know anyway. Deanna Troi would say she senses wrath in a Klingon, who is destroying furniture and smashing walls at the moment. If she was on DS9, her most frequent words would be ''I sense Garak lies to us.'' , or ''Odo, I sense you feel grumpy today''..
But she got better, when she got rid of revealing costumes and that enormous wig, and started to wear a regular starfleet uniform, and her empathic abilities got weaker.

Ditto.

She became somewhat respectable when she took the bridge test in season 6 and started actually wearing a uniform. But before that it was clear her and her cleavage were only there for eye candy. Perhaps if she had just been a civilian counselor onboard, much the way Keiko was a civilian botanist, then maybe she wouldn't have been so irksome. I see a ship's (or station's) therapist being a part of the CMO's medical team, not being a member of the senior staff.

And on DS9, Sisko all but admits that he's just making up the counselor job so Ezri has a reason to stay.

^Well, as to that last point--Sisko's reasoning is valid. The trauma of war demands a counselor, to help those who've experienced it to recover.

Makes me wonder why there wasn't one on the station beforehand.

And as I said before, Ezri is much more believable than Deanna, as a "good" counselor.

Wait.

Could someone explain what kind of jokes Sirtis made about DS9?

That is what I was thinking. Anyways, couldn't see Troi working as a permanent character on DS9. A counselor could have been added during seasons 5 & 6, as recurring role, before Ezri arrives.

But even then, introducing Ezri earlier would be much better than adding Counselor Cleavage. Troi just couldn't jive with DS9 at all, and it would be painful to watch.

I dislike Troi a lot and I'm glad she never appeared. I wish her mother never did too. At times the Federation seemed to be populated by a few dozen people.

This is actually a main complaint of mine with Treklit and the Star Wars EU.

Yeah, having Troi as a regular on DS9 would have derailed too many interesting plot-lines

Agreed. Ezri as a recurring character, prior to Season 7, would have been a major improvement, even as it stands!

(After all...didn't they make a reference to a counselor in "Hard Time"? Perhaps have Ezri as the station counselor beforehand...and in "Tears Of The Prophets", she gets the symbiont out of necessity....)

No, because he was a loudmouth jerk and a bigot.

A counselor is mentioned in the episode "Hard Time" for O'Brien. When O'Brien is balking about it at one point Bashir says "Unless you'd rather talk to me"

So there was some kind of counselor before Ezri maybe not a permanent full time kind of thing. Just speculation

Both cantankerous.

Both full of attitude.

Both contemptuous of Vulcan logic.

Both hot tempered.

Both best friends with their captain--first-name basis, etc.

Both possessing a wry sense of humor.

So, you're saying that Trip is nothing but a second rate rip-off of Bones? Okay, I'll buy that.

And for the record, Trip never once called Archer "John", or even "Jonathan". It was always "Cap'n", or "Sir".

Hey, wasn't this thread supposed to be about Troi on DS9? Something I wish we'd seen incidentally.

I don't know about making Troi a regular, but I do think (as others - possibly you, RandyS, and perhaps maybe even me ;) - mentioned way back when early in the thread), a visit or a few visits would have been nice so as to actually conclude the Troi-Worf romance rather than merely having it vanish without a trace and with no explanation or anything.

It was simply careless to chop off a relationship between two such important characters that way after such a long build up. I'm happy with the cast we ended up with on DS9, and I wouldn't really want Troi to replace any of them. (And I agree Siritis had her limitations as an actor, though she had improved a lot by the end of TNG.) But...it's just not right to have a relationship with so much build up that then disappears as though it had never happened. That's just sloppy. Common, sure, but still sloppy.
