I've been a long-time Mac user (and even had one of his NeXT machines back in the early 90's) and I'm quite saddened by this, albeit not surprised in light of his cancer. I'm astonished he lasted as long as he did. From what I've heard, pancreatic cancer is normally a quick death sentence. He managed to pull it through and keep delivering amazing concepts, virtually redefining how we view all technology in the outset of the 21st century and leaving behind a legacy of one of the most successful companies in the world and a slew of copy-cats trailing behind. Apple will never be the same. RIP, Steve - your futurist vision and insight will be sorely missed.

I am not an Apple person but my first computer was a Mac an I loved it. His achievements are very inspiring for us computer scientists. I hope he is in a better place.

I've always had an Apple computer. I don't agree with everything the company did and does, or like all of its products, but I've loved all my Macs.

Apple often seemed be leading where most everyone else would eventually go.

Agreed. I was working, and about a quarter til 8 last night someone said that his passing was all over twitter, so we hopped online and saw the first unattributed headline on a newspaper site. I thought "this could be a hack, like earlier in the year". Then, I pulled up engadget.com. gizmodo.com, gdgt.com. All the same numbing news.

The picture on Apple.com's site sealed it. He really was dead.

The amazing part is that, for as little as the mainstream news covered it, twitter was brought down temporarily due to people sharing the news and their grief. Says something about how our times are changing.

He will be missed.
