The press release also states the retail price at $21.99...
RAMA

Ack, I missed that. :o

In the UK, I imagine the full retail price will be £21.99 (£$35) as we're usually treated as gullible rubes who'll gladly pay through the nose.
I'll be surprised if it's that cheap, tbh

Amazon in Germany have listed it at €13.99, which is about £12. I expect that it will be identical to the UK version, but Amazon UK haven't listed it yet.

£12 or maybe even £13.99 would be okay.

No Chance. I remember paying £13.99 for Volume 65 (Man of the People, Relics) of TNG on VHS back in the early 90's (Funny what sticks in your brain...:D) from WHSmiths.

I think you'll be right with £21.99. Probably more in HMV too.

I surprised that HMV haven't gone under yet with the competition from Internet sites like Play and Amazon. I guess there must just be enough impulse-buyers left around to keep them ticking over after Woolies and Zaavi bit the dust.

ETA: I was just thinking about which episodes from the first two seasons I'd want to watch again in HD.
I think it's only a handful from each, which makes me doubt that the outlay is worth it for me until at least the third season.

Whenever I go into HMV it's busy, though I don't know how many people actually buy things there. HMV is part of the Waterstones group, and is pretty much the last man standing in the home media market.

I notice that HMV have been putting fancy artwork slip covers on a bunch of Blu-ray releases such as Serenity, Pitch Black, and Chronicles of Riddick and pitching them at 2 for £20. Never mind that you can buy these titles without the fancy cardboard covers for less than £7.50 each online. They really are going for the impulse buyers. They do have the Blu-ray of Withnail and I on sale for £3, which I was tempted to buy.

Anyway, back to the topic. I watched "Encounter at Farpoint" again yesterday, and remembered how clunky TNG was in its early days. The Q stuff is really quite tiresome to sit through. In the first season, I'm only really interested in seeing "11001001", "Conspiracy", and perhaps "The Arsenal of Freedom" in HD. Shelling out £60-80 or so for 2 or 3 episodes just wouldn't be worth it for me. Season 2 is a bit better with "Elementary, Dear Data", "A Matter of Honor", "The Measure of a Man", "Time Squared", "Q Who", and "Peak Performance", but that's still only 6 episodes. Season 3 is where the interest in TNG HD starts for me with at least 15 good or excellent episodes.

Rob Burnett has implored me to get a Blu-Ray, so I may wind up breaking down and looking into getting a cheap one (as opposed to my main game plan and holding out for a PS3).

Haha, maybe the live action will be 4:3 and the space shots will be 16:9. :guffaw:

Not so hilarious or far-fetched really...on netflix the wider screen FX are in 16:9 and the rest of the series is 4:3...so we may see the ILM shots in full glory at some point.

Ah please not on the BD...I´d prefer ONE format, no switching...my TV needs a few seconds to recognise and switch from one format to the other and I would hate to have to sit thru this 5+ times per episode.

We pay 15 € for the taster here in germany , wich is an okay price considering that a BD of smiliar length normaly is between 25 and 40 €.

Edit: Seems the price now fell to 13,99.

HMV sold off Waterstone's to keep themselves ticking over and so the higher ups could reward themselves with nice bonuses.

I have a friend who works there which is pretty handy (30% staff discount!).

They could encode the black bars at the side for the 4:3 scenes so a mode switch wouldn't be necessary. That shouldn't add much to the file size. However, I think it would look kind of odd. I expect they will crop the 4:3 scenes for broadcast syndication. While watching "Encounter at Farpoint" and "The Best of Both Worlds" on DVD, I experimented with using my PC to crop the picture to 16:9. Even when I adjusted the position of the framing to be as optimal as possible, I found that there were certain scenes whose aesthetic composition suffered badly - in my personal opinion, of course.

^That's exactly how it does work. You can't have Blu-ray in 4:3 as I understand it, it is inherently a 16:9 format, which means whenever you see the black bars in an old TV show, they are encoded in. You wouldn't experience the AR change you get with DVD.

Sounds great. BlueRay can do quite amazing things via its scripting engine, maybe its possible to have the 16:9 optional? Basically the whole image would be on the disc, but normally black bars would mask it to 4:3, unless an option to remove the bars is activated. So people who prefer 4:3 because it was framed that way can watch it that way, and everyone else can watch it in 16:9.

Nope, that wouldn't work because in your scheme, you'd be masking something that's already been cropped down to 16:9. You'd lose even more of the picture.

Don't forget, rumour is we are getting both ARs but it will be 4:3 on blu-ray with 16:9 saved for TV and online streaming. Both camps should be happy. Just buy the blu-rays and watch the 16:9 versions on streaming or download them after they've aired.

In some markets, there might be enough demand to allow sets of both aspect ratio versions on Blu-ray to be made available.

Sorry, I don't think I've heard that rumor. Everything official/quasi-official has said 4x3. It's only the fans who refuse to let it die that keep bringing up 16x9.
