BUFFY Fans: Can a Buffy fan watch Twilight?

ReadyAndWilling

Fleet Captain
hi all, i recently came across this new movie series called 'Twilight'. i'm a big time Buffy fan since 1997 and was wondering how this show is compared to Buffy? i don't know, but i can only guess they use a lot of Joss' style in the movies?

is it worth watching or will it feel like an imitation of Buffy?

thanks

I hated the first Twilight film, and haven't bothered seeing any more films or reading any of the books. It's mushy tween crap. I'm not sure why I watched it really - I suppose as a Buffy fan I thought their might be something more to it all.

This is the only way for a Buffy fan to watch Twilight. In all honesty I don't think you'd enjoy it if you're a big Buffy fan. Twilight is the anti-Buffy. Buffy is about a strong, independent hero. Twilight is about a weak, co-dependent victim. Buffy is about girl power. Twilight is just plain anti-feminist.

I find that Twilight only really works as entertainment if one is very drunk. I watched the first three movies in a row shitfaced and found their entertainment factor went up immensely. But do note that you need to drink yourself almost to the point of alchohol poisoning, so it may not be worth it to you. :)

Whedon weighs in.

Twillight is this generations girl fantasy escapism and not in a good way.. it's basically a fantasy soap (and a bad one).

A weak girl that for some reason every (attractive) supernatural either falls for or wants to kill so the other ones who love her have to defend her.

Stay away from it unless you are a young teenage girl who hasn't experienced true relationships and so doesn't know better.

Twilight is Teen Angst, weak human girl falling in love with a Vampire (And also a Werewolf). It's not about hunting Demons and Vampires like Buffy, there is no strong female heroine.

If you're in it for Violence to/from Vampires/Werewolves, you'd probably enjoy the Underworld Series much more, which is a War between Vampires and Werewolves.

Also, the Vampire Diaries TV Series, though it is Teen Angsty (Especially in the beginning), would also probably be more to the liking of a Buffy Fan than Twilight.

Twilight is geared more at the Romantic teenage girl who drools over the Lead actors

NO. A million times no.

Twilightis very bad fiction of the worst kind. On the level of Mary Sue fanfic bad. Not witty, concise, well-plotted, or at all interesting, its themes are general anti-feminist and the protagonist is the exact opposite of Buffy: largely helpless and whiny. Stephen King put it best when he said, "...the moral of Twilight is how important it is to have a boyfriend."

I've never seen the movies, but have read the books, if only to be immune to arguments of "But you can't criticize the series if you didn't read all of it!" Stay far, far away.

In fact, I'm trying to convince tween girl relatives to stay far, far away, and that's the target audience. If you're a tween girl, there's plenty of sappy supernatural teen/tween-geared romance that doesn't involve such insipid characters.

My nine year old saw Twilight because all her friends have seen it. She hasn't expressed any interest in seeing the sequels. I showed her the first Buffy movie and she loved it. I showed her several first season eps and she loves them. It's heartening to see how unaffected she was by Twilight and how drawn she was to an empowering figure such as Buffy. :)

The first movie had an interesting directorial tone to it, so it's a memorable film. As soon as it was a big success the studio dumped the director. I have no idea what the later movies are like.

Pattinson is certainly a more appealing and talented actor to play the male lead than, oh, David Boreanaz (who isn't?). That said, I prefer James Marsters. ;)

Twilight is Teen Angst, weak human girl falling in love with a Vampire.

So is Buffy, in many ways.

I don't see why a Buffy fan would be forbidden from enjoying Twilight. I know quite a few who love both series. Granted, both are women in their mid 20's! I don't know a single guy who is into Twilight.

Buffy...Weak? When?

Certainly nothing forbidding someone from enjoying both, they are completely different in the Leading Lady department, and that is likely to make one or the other unpalatable to most fans.

From what I've read, most people who are Big Buffy Fans, are fans of Buffy herself being a strong hero, Girl-Power and all that. You don't get any strength whatsoever from Bella.

I was a casual Buffy Fan, never understood the over the top love of it, but, then I love stuff others don't think much of, so, there you ahve it. I did try the first Twilight movie, it's not bad, but, Bella really is difficult to take. Tried the second Twilight movie, and didn't get very far into it before I gave up.

Buffy would slay the entire cullen family and the black eye peas trio.
The books were eh and the movies were bad. and Buffy was never weak in any of the 7 yr run. and she kicks ass even more in the comic series.

Can a buffy fan watch Twilight?

Not without laughing.
Damn, that was going to be my answer.

I'm interested in still having a functional liver, so rather than go the alcohol poisoning route, I suggest watching the Twilight movies while listening to Rifftrax, or providing your own running commentary.
