This is very interesting to me. I spent two years in college living in Boston, and I always said the same thing. Very liberal, intellectually speaking. But a very rigid and formal culture. It was a strange dichotomy.

I can't say anyone close to me is Republican. One or two are center-right but that's hardly Republican anymore.

I found there were actually two factions of Dems in MA. You have the very liberal social Dems in places like Cambridge and in places in the western part of the state near major universities. Then you have the more pro-union, blue collar socially conservative JFK loving Dems that make up a majority of the voting block. It made for some strange conversations as many older folks who vote Dem no matter what in elections believed more along the lines of moderate conservatives.
On a more serious note...my first reaction was to very strongly dislike the implication the title has that having a differing opinion is a disease. It sounds like the hushed tone people used to use in the 80s to say someone was HIV-positive.

You are reading way, way too much into this thread. I can't see where you're coming from at all, to be honest.
Generally that kind of title is something you do when you think that fact is newsworthy. This is something that should normally be a mundane fact, but it's being cast as though it were something freakish or weird.

The only implication of the title is that his dad and best friends are Republicans. Anything else you read into it is your problem fed by a persecution complex and a need to find offense where none is intended. But even that shouldn't have lasted beyond his OP, since he made it clear there that all he was talking about was having people close to you with different political views. So, the fact that you read that and still felt it necessary to bring this up is bizarre.

I can only chalk it up to the shining example I set.
Unfortunately, I have not been so influential on some other relatives....My racist, homophobic, religious extremist, censorious relatives all claim to be (and to vote) Democrat. I suppose if there are Southern Democrats, there can be Northern Republicans.
Majority of my family is conservative, but some of them are registered democrats. When it comes to choosing friends I don't have a litmus test. Some are more politically active than others and makes for fun banter at election time, but it never gets anywhere near as personal as some of the crazy folks like to make it on forums such as these.
I have Republican friends, but I avoid discussing politics with them because they just get angry so quickly. For whatever reason, the Republicans I know are all really short-tempered.
It's a very odd place in that regard. It's politically highly liberal and yuppie central. There are a lot of people here that are faux green and faux enlightened. They swear by their reuseable Whole Foods bag, but jump on a plane to France at the drop of a hat because they can't get their favorite wine anywhere else and people in Europe just 'get them' better.
People are also stressed out beyond belief for some reason. My office is filled with people about to snap.
I'm just happy when I find someone who enjoys the outdoors like we do, or when I can actually find someplace that is pet friendly.
No its not. If the thread title was: My dad and best friend have an opposing political ideology - THAT would have been a "big stretch." I agree with Nerys; its as if the OP is suggesting Republicans are a long since dismissed political dead end - that there are no Republicans.... anywhere
