SW blu-rays have changes to the films again

The mere fact though that this video was done - that whoever shot it likely knew the shitstorm it might elicit and the cheering it might also create - just points to how riduculous some Warsies have been taking all of this.

Yes, I think George Lucas has the right to make changes to his movies. No, I don't think he should make anymore because the ones he's made have been piss-poor. In a perfect world, he'd make all the versions available but you know what? We don't live in a perfect world.

I stand by my previous statement.

That reminds me of the dim bulbs who waited in line to buy an iPad, just to smash it with a baseball bat for YouTube.

Yeah, there are a lot of idiots out there. For the sake of that guy's wallet, I hope that was just a dummy display box or something. Otherwise that was a ridiculous waste of a decent amount of money, which could have been used for something more productive.

90 bucks? How much food can an underprivileged American family get for that?

A lot more than $0. A lot more than a burned out hulk of a Blu-Ray case and charred discs.

The point is - it's a waste of money. The money could have gone to Red Cross. Or to an orphanage or a pet rescue/shelter or --gasp-- the guy's savings account. Instead, he just wasted it. He's a dumbass.

I wondered if that was a dummy display box dressed up to look like the real thing. When I went into HMV, they only had the dummy boxes on display.

I'd wager it was.

And if it wasn't, so what? Yes, it's a waste, but you know what? Americans waste millions of dollars a day on crap that will end up sitting in a landfill for thousands of years. People also waste millions of dollars on stupid stunts or acts that cost society (drunk driving, rape, ect.)

Remember when the Star Wars DVD's were ready to come out, and people were up in arms because crazy uber-fans were paying $400 to get a set a week early off of Ebay? That was much, much worse than this!

Prompted by the Blu-Ray release, I did some tedious legwork and managed to get a copy of Harmy's 'despecialized' editions of the first three films. What a revelation! Crisp, clear 720p visuals with none of the fuckery that Lucas perpetrated over the years. Star Wars even features the original crawl that omits the 'episode iv' title card. If you're interested in seeing the originals, I highly recommend these fans edits.

There is no need to endorse illegal downloading.

In this case, I'd disagree. Star Wars and its two sequels are part of the cultural lexicon. They should be preserved, not corrected to death. This is the only way that I can enjoy the movies of my youth.

What's to explain?

1) Downloading torrents of the film is illegal. It's also against board rules to discuss it.

2) Lucas owns the films and no matter how much we may not like it, its his prerogative to release or keep locked away whatever the fuck he wants to.

3) You claim "This is the only way that I can enjoy the movies of my youth." Really? Even though the original versions of the films were made available on DVD not too long ago? Even though the original versions of the films were available on VHS for years?

It is not our place to determine whether the films should or should not be corrected or not. Ideally, preserved prints of those original films we all loved as kids would be you know, preserved. If that were at least the case, this wouldn't be so irritating. But more irritating than the changes being made endlessly is the even more endless sense of indignant entitlement the more vocal Star Wars fans seem to have over the films.

As an artist, I respect Lucas' right to put out what he wants. I don't necessarily agree with it; I certainly don't like it, but I'm not going to resort to petty theft just to "get what I want" when its no longer made available to me.

To conclude, in my opinion, you're wrong.

I'm all for any way that the original versions can be made available to people who want to see them.

That said, no matter how much you might enjoy versions of the Special Editions that have had footage chopped out and a little computer jiggery done to them they are not the original films - if you think otherwise you can lay that to fading memories of youth.

If you are going to download illegal copies than fine. No one is stopping you. But don't go around posting/bragging about it. It just makes you look bad.

1) No torrents were involved.
2) Lucas has lost all perspective. In any case, his films have passed into the common lexicon and become pop culture. In a very real sense, we all own these movies now. Marco Arment and John Siracusa on 5by5 have talked about this at length and both made an interesting point: if it weren't for the extension of copyright by Disney, films like Star Wars would be in the public domain, where both Lucas and any other interested party could compete in the market to see which version garnered the most sales. Copyright is hampering both commercial and artistic merit in this case.

And yeah, sure, there are VHS and crappy laserdisc rips on DVD, but they suck. ;)

The Laserdisc transfer to DVD that a friend owns and that I saw - five years ago - was quite good. And it had the virtue of actually being the original film in every detail - every shot, every edit, every bit of the sound mix...and of course the pristine version of the bar scene.

I see that there's a complete set of the originals for sale on Laserdisc right now for under 20 dollars. Since I own a Laserdisc player, I may go for that.

What you're downloading is inferior to that. So some kid sat at the computer and painted out "A New Hope" - BFD. :p

I own the laserdisc DVD transfer set and I couldn't disagree more. They're low-res, muddy, letterboxed messes. Side by side, there's no comparison. That said, the actual laserdisc copies are supposed to be much better than the DVD transfers, so you could be in for a treat.

They are probably not the same transfers in any event - these were done by a friend of a family member from his Laserdiscs.

In any event, they are the original movies rather than chop-jobs done to the Special Editions by a kid with Final Cut.
