"Castle" season 4 begins tonight

A while ago Fillion said in an interview (maybe Kevin Pollack's Chat Show or Nerdist) that he pitched a story about a sci-fi convention and the star of a long since cancelled show gets murdered and all of his fellow cast mates are suspects. He wanted to essentially have a Firefly reunion, and since Tim Minear is an EP on the show, and they aren't shy about throwing in some Firefly nodds... I don't know if that'll ever get made, but I would love to see that.

It sounds very similar to the soap opera star murder episode we got.

As for the episode, I have to say that I was not really blown away. I didn't feel any tension when they were trying to save Kate's life because it was pretty obvious that they weren't going to kill her off. As other's have said the new Captain is very clichéd but there were a few scene's I sort of got the feeling that she "gets it" and is just doing her job. Still, I would have preferred to have seen Michael Dorn as the new Captain. When I saw his name in the credits I was hoping that's what we would get.

I also felt the show was pretty predictable. Another season premiere where they don't talk all summer but you just knew they would make up in the end. And as soon as Kate froze up the first time she had to draw her weapon you knew there would be a scene later on where she'd redeem herself. I also don't think the darker tone works for the show. What I like most about Castle are the interactions between the team when they're working a case and the humour. I know they like to inject a little drama to the show once in a while but they are definitely not my favourite episodes.

Still, I look forward to seeing how the season unfolds. I hope we get to see of Michael Dorn too.

The novels are pretty crappy. They're cliche pulp detective novels. But that said, they seem to be exactly the kind of thing Castle would write.

Still, I liked the way that it was Castle having her back, reassuring her "You've got this," that let her overcome her hesitation. A great moment for them as a team.

They'll probably go back to that for most of the season, but they had a lot of stuff to deal with here before they could.

^Yeah, that's why I wasn't too harsh on the episode. I know they need these kind of episodes once in a while to move along the the story of Kate's Mother's murder.

So Castle got the mayor to get him back with the team again? Well there goes my theory that the mayor is the big bad. Boo!

That would actually be my guess, that and by keeping Castle in the mix, not only does he have inside info as to what she's doing, Rick will keep her out of the situation, at least he would hope so.

^Unless it's a "keep your enemies closer" kind of thing.

That was my thought, too. I thought it was quite a good season opener, didn't insult your intelligence or use a lot of cliches. I like the new captain, nice to see Mrs. Sisko again.

My wife's complaint: two minutes of Michael Dorn? Don't tease me like that! As mentioned above, he looks great, about as thin as early TNG. He's certainly aging well. Even as a straight male, I have to admit that man has one of the sexiest male voices of all time.

That guy Captain Montgomery sent the evidence to called the office of a Senator IIRC to inform them that he was now blackmailing them to protect Beckett, so it appears the conspiracy goes even higher than the Mayor (though he could be involved as well) to either the NY State Senate or the US Senate. Which would make the ease of access to former special forces soldiers to use as mercenaries a bit more plausible.

Another awesome episode tonight...had a "Kick-Ass" feel to it. Nathan was really in his element in particular and I do love Castle's moments with Alexis. They're some of the most real father/daughter/kid moments on TV. I also liked how the Officer Hastings/Paul Wittiaker relationship obviously paralleled Rick/Kate's. I wish this show was on every day...

I missed that. The scene I remember, but I must have missed to whom he made the call.

This. All of it!!!

Great episode tonight! My only nit is that you can't slice somone in half like that with one swing of a sword. Regardless, I really enjoyed this one.

I don't see why not.. it "just" would take a master swordsman and a very high quality sword (both unlikely to find with normal means in New York).

As to the episode.. wow. Nerd gold! Castle going nerd-mental was to be expected and it was glorious but Beckett joining in at times and showing her own nerd? Awesome! :techman: It showed a normal side to her, that she's not a cop 24/7 but a real human and i liked that.

And being the biggest Castle shipper out there i loved the last scene of the case when the mirror Kate/Castle couple did the one thing they can't do yet.. kiss with a passion. I loved Castle's reaction and especially Beckett looking after him with that smile.. she's so in love! :techman:

I feared that after the season premiere the show would remain in the dark tone for a while but i guess those themes will be reserved for the main plot episodes.

See ya next week!

Plus an inhuman amount of physical strength. That's a lot of bones to slice thru.

Loved the second episode. They're back in their groove after that awful season opener. Kooky murder mystery, family shenanigans, sexual tension at work. All is right with the world. Still not crazy about the new captain, but maybe she'll grow on me. :)
