"Castle" season 4 begins tonight

Wait - THAT WAS MICHAEL DORN?!?

Damn, I must have been half asleep or something!

With that voice, how could it be anyone else? I didn't recognize his face at all -- he seems to have lost a lot of weight -- but there's no mistaking that polished basso of his.

Years ago i remember him being on CNN and at the end of the interview he asked for this little favor, something he wanted to do for ages.. and he said "This is CNN!" in this deep voice.. it was glorious and it took me off the seat :techman:

Wow, I guess I'm the only one who hated it. The episode was all over the place.

And seriously? The new female captain wants to be called SIR?! Is that supposed to be a substitute for a personality?

I was expecting a much better payoff for that fantastic finale.

And when i heard that she dumped Dr. Motorcycle-Boy i first clapped and then absolutely knew that she heard him.. my inner shipper is content with the development :techman:
I rather liked the way they handled him. THey didn't give it much time, because it didn't need much. And Johs was not a jerk. He was understandably emotional doing what he could to save her until another surgeon could arrive. Granted, he didn't give up the scalpel easily... but again.... that made sense. And in a way he did call Castle out, rightly so.

I had forgotten all about that! Perfect! You don't suppose it's out there on YouTube anywhere is it?

For my part, I'm not saying it was perfect, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it for a number of reasons. It won't be possible to properly evaluate it for awhile - maybe all season - because it seems they may - and I emphasize "may" - be taking the long view here. Consequently, the new captain's predictably gruff personality will hopefully get more background and explanation.

It's not so much that i disliked Josh.. he seemed like a fine guy.. intelligent, good looking and decent but when you root for this other guy you just tend to not like the current bf :)

However this short scene in the hallway was more than we got the entire season other than him being used as a wrench to throw between their feet whenever it seemed they'd get too close to each other.. a bit of bad writing if you ask me. They could have used him a bit more but that chance has passed.. i'm just curious now when do they blow the whole thing.. another season with longing looks, almost moments and pining will kill me (and will definitely be bad writing.. they get a pass for this season opening because it was well done and believable but don't drag it out needlessly.. there's tons of fun and dramatic possibility within a Kate/Castle relationship).

I'm with Jinx. I love the show, but I really almost hated the S4 premier. Did they change writers or something? I've come to expect intelligent plots, but this episode was cliché, predictable, and everything was resolved way too handily. The whole formula for the show seems to have altered. One of the things I liked most about the show was that the characters were so supportive of each other. Now things have turned Grimdark™. There's some scary-evil conspiracy monster overshadowing the whole vibe, the new Captain is a stereotypical bitchy-female-in-charge type, Beckett has serious mental issues, and Castle's daughter has a whole new bitchy-disrespectful-teenager personality! Plus, Beckett's new hair/makeup makes her look like a hooker. :)

On the other hand, Castle's admission that he loved Kate painted the writers into an impossible corner. Shows tend to self-destruct when the main characters finally actually get together. So maybe they did the best they could to extract themselves from that situation, and things will pick up again from here on out. Keeping my fingers crossed. :)

I just got through playing catch up on all 3 seasons and the fourth season primier. I am now hooked on this show. I thought season 3 finally was awesome. the premier it self was pretty good especially adding michael dorn to the cast was awesome. so she remmbers everything that happened including Richard telling her that he loved her. so we now have sexual tension on both sides. and what was up with the computer Richard had do you think he has all the files that were destroyed in the fire?

all so has any one read any of the books?

Beyond that, she's channeling every sterotypical asshole Police Captain from every cop show and movie from the 70s and 80s. I can't stand her character at all.

Castle's daughter has a whole new bitchy-disrespectful-teenager personality!

I'll give her a little latitude on this one. She was almost too goody-goody before, so maybe she's starting to see life in a different way. I know I'd change a bit if I was standing mere feet from someone I cared about get shot during a funeral for someone else I liked.

I was great to see Dorn. Seeing his name in the credits I forgot all about him until he showed up at the end. A while ago Fillion said in an interview (maybe Kevin Pollack's Chat Show or Nerdist) that he pitched a story about a sci-fi convention and the star of a long since cancelled show gets murdered and all of his fellow cast mates are suspects. He wanted to essentially have a Firefly reunion, and since Tim Minear is an EP on the show, and they aren't shy about throwing in some Firefly nodds... I don't know if that'll ever get made, but I would love to see that.

Captain Gates demand to be called sir or Captain reminded me immediately of Captain Janeway's declaration to Tom Paris regarding addressment of rank :) LOL. Penny's delivery of that line was almost exactly like Kate Mulgrew's.

I am so glad that's clearly not the direction they're going; Dorn is evidently playing a much gentler, more thoughtful character here, and it's great to see him doing something so different instead of just rehashing something he stopped doing years ago. Heck, even Worf had grown beyond that tedious Klingon stereotype by the time the DS9 writers were done with him.

Michael Dorn has a rich and versatile career beyond Star Trek. Most of it has been in animation voice work, though, so it hasn't been as high-profile (except among animation buffs like me). I'm glad to see him in a live-action role that lets him rise above lazy typecasting.
I know a number of people who think the remake of Beauty and the Beast (the Ron Perlman/Linda Hamilton series) is a bad idea because the casting could never be matched. However, I think Dorn would be more than equal to Perlman's Vincent. I somehow doubt he'd be on the CW's radar, but I think he has both the gravitas and the humor to pull it off.

I had the same thought too. I'll admit I don't care for the character right now, but I trust PJJ and the writers to hopefully make her more interesting than the typical by the book boss she is right now.
Overall I thought the episode was pretty good. Nothing reallly amazing, but a solid start to the season. I'm curious how where Kate remembering everything, and Castle's investigation will go as the season goes on.

Also I laughed at her expression after Ryan and Esposito's explanation of where Castle and Beckett went. You could tell she knew they were bull shitting. I don't think she's all that hard assed, of course it's really early.

okay cool is there a reading list for them ?

There aren't that many books at this point. There are only 3, including the one mentioned after this episode that's just been released, and a graphic novel for "Derrick Storm" who is the main character in Castle's previous series as mentioned in the show. Never read the graphic novel and I just bought the newest book. The books have been good reads so far, they're nothing ground breaking and read like an episode of the show. There enjoyable for a quick and easy read so I'd recommend them. If you're looking for a really dark, deep murder/mystery read, you won't find them in these books though.

I enjoyed the episode, I felt it was a good opening episode for this year after the cliffhanger from last year. I also like how they handled the whole "I Love You" revelation from Castle at the end of last years finale. It would've been such a cop out for her to actually forget it, or for them to start a relationship at this point with everything going on, it's a brave choice, one that I'm sure will have consequences later on.

I also like the whole Kate seeing a psychiatrist angle they're going with. With everything that's happened to her, and where things are still at, I couldn't begin to understand what she's going through and I'm glad she's getting help. It certainly helps that it's Michael Dorn too, I hope he sticks around for a while, I always liked him. I guess that's at least two former Star Trek alumni that's been in this show now, plus someone who was in a Firefly episode.

Rick is going down a dangerous road here with him leading Kate away from her mothers case in an attempt to protect her. I get the feeling he's really going to pay for it in the long run, not only with Kate, but with his mother and daughter as well. Can't wait to find out who this new, secret guy is, and what his role in the whole thing is. I have my suspicions that the mayor is involved in this as well.

I think my only problem with the episode was the actual murder/mystery itself. Of course, that's never been a strong point for the show, or it's main focus. The show has always been about the characters and their interaction with each other but, come on. You mean to tell me no one bothered to search the chicks room before Castle showed up? I mean, the sheets and everything had been removed from the bed, probably by forensics, and no one notice the lack of a blood stain under the bed in the shape of a body, and fingerprints on the bed frame? That was a stretch imo.

Anyway, looking forward to the season and to seeing where it all leads to. Hopefully, they can continue and improve upon where the shows been so far.:techman:

^Yeah, the books are decent as Castle tie-in novels with the character names changed (and relationships slightly altered), but they're totally unconvincing as the actual in-universe novels Castle writes, since there's no way he'd be so, well, unoriginal and copy the characters so exactly from real people rather than creating (less legally actionable) composites.
