Alphas renewed for season 2

I like most of the episodes written by Ira Steven Behr and Robert Hewitt Wolfe in various series such as Star Trek: DS9, The 4400 and Andromeda so its natural that I will give Alphas a shot. So far, its been pretty good.

So far, Gary and Dr Rosen are the characters I find most interesting. I wouldn't be surprised if Gary is eventually put into some form of leadership position.

Yay! I'm very excited about this news...

This show is the best "superhero" show since Heroes Season 1. But it is VERY different, and it approaches the material from a different angle.

It's clearly much more low budget than Heroes, but I think this is actually helping the show - they have to focus more on characters, and be more down to earth.

My favorite characters:
- Dr. Rosen (What Dr. Suresh in "Heroes" SHOULD have been)
- Gary
But I really do like all of the main characters.

I'm surprised they didn't give Gary more of a role in that cult episode. They've established from the beginning that one of his traits is an inability to be "pushed." They need to use that plotline more...particularly when it comes to his relationship with Nina.

I'm so happy about the renewal. I ra Steven Behr and Robert Hewitt Wolfe are doing a great job as usual. The writing and dialogue are marvelous and it's not too serialized which I'm getting tried of. Good episode plots with some arcs development. The best.

I like Dr. Rosen, but Gary is by far the standout character. Almost every scene he is in gold, and they have tossed in a surprising amount of character development for him.

On the flip side the scruffy guy and hot girl are exceptionally boring.

the hot girl is growing on me, but... yeah, not that interesting.
The scruffy guy... it's disappointing, I like his power, but there's kinda not much going on, so, yeah.

I'm sorry , but who is the "scruffy" guy? Are you referring to Hicks?

Just watched the marathon today from about 5:00 on. Now I am hooked, to say the least. But now, as with "Falling Skies", we have to wait till 2012!
In the Brent Spiner episode wasn't that the same actress who was the "Shapechanger" in "No Ordinary Family"?
One problem I have with this show as with MANY others is why do all the bad guys get the "better" powers?...

The season finale was very good, imo the best episode of the series. Can't wait until next year!
Agreed on all counts. Early this season, I remarked to a friend who is also a big Trek fan and who has been watching this show due to the involvement of Behr and Wolfe that I had serious doubts about their ability to produce on this network a show that would break out of the Eureka/Warehouse 13 fluff model. I'm quite happy to say that the last few weeks, and in particular these last two episodes, have me considering that Syfy might not stand as the detriment I initially expected it to be.

One problem I have with this show as with MANY others is why do all the bad guys get the "better" powers?...
If the protagonists had the better powers, there wouldn't be much of a struggle against the perceived enemies, would there? ;)

Some of them do have better powers, they just don't use them to their full efficiency. The chick who can "push" people, Gary, and super-reflexes-and-accuracy guy being the three big ones. Gary, at least, has an excuse. The chick is too obsessed with using it the way she always has. And super-reflexes guy is just a dimwitted moron. But all three of those powers could be used to so much more effect.

Yeah, I think that's a fair assessment. Rachel, for one, has talked about Rosen helping her to learn to control her abilities, so what we need as far as the use of the various powers is to see the team pushed to expand their personal concepts of what they can and can't do. I hope for some of that to come through during season two.

Pshycho nailed it. The drama lies in their need for teamwork and what happens when they don't always get along. This show is less about their powers and more about how they each have a talent that helps the group.

Rosen and Gary are definitely the standouts, Bill and Rachel are interesting, and of course Nina and Cameron are a bit boring
all the characters have a 'real' feeling to them . . . their interactions sometimes seem unscripted
I wonder if they adlib . . .

who else thinks Rosen should bring the beard back? :D

Like they're going to let him have a razor in the hole they're going to drop him in.

OKies...

I wonder if this "transmission" is going to be seen also in a coming episode of Eureka or Warehouse 13?

That would be awesome.

I think Alphas is great but the problem with such shows is that they are losing audience when they become too serialized. You miss an episode then you say 'fukk it'.

People just want to sit in front of the TV and wind down. They can do it while watching a crime drama or even the most intelligent documentaries. But they DON'T want to have to devote themselves to a TV shows week after week. Hell, we don't even recall the content of last week's episode, since people are too busy with other things (from real life to other TV shows).

Yah, nobody watched six seasons of LOST. Nobody watched five years of Babylon 5. Nobody watched five years of nuBattlestar. Nobody wants to watch serialized shows...

LOST - People watched.

Babylon 5 - Although it had a loyal following, honestly, no, not many watched it.

BattleStar Galactica 2003 - See 'Babylon 5' above.

BTW - you forgot 'Heroes' Season 1, which people watched.

Me, I do like seriealized shows; but it's definitely not a sure win scenario; nor is it a sure faile scenario. Depends on the material, and the execution.

Sure I don't want to have zero highly serialized TV shows, but I'm just tired of the highly serialized bandwagon we're seeing in many Sci-fi shows.

Even shows where you should get a nice episodic stories, like a new movie, everyweek, they become serialize more and more. Losing the audience along the way. Like Alphas. I hope TV producers wake up to the reality and bring the X-files, TNG format back. Sure there's some character and story arcs but not in a way you can't understand ANY plot line happening in an episode. You don't feel lost at all (beside on some very rare occasion).

I hope TV producers wake up to the reality of TV and the reality of their viewers which are not all on the internet talking about TV shows. The incredible popularity of crime drama shows the right format. We're talking 10-18 millions viewers a week!! It's not monday night football but it's darn close!

I don't want episodic sci-fi shows unless they're anthology-type shows, like the Twilight Zone or something.

If I want to be talked down and treated like a fucking idiot, there's an endless array of mindless sitcoms and not-even-close-to-reality shows out there. I want my drama and my sci-fi involved and thought-provoking. I don't want shit written for idiots.

Mindless?? What does it have to do with anything? For you serialized soap opera format is the summon of intelligence?

For you hightly serialized format means the summon of intelligence. You can be serious or that intelligent in the first place to say that.

You can obviously write many intelligent stuff on both format. That's beside the point. Personally, I find that many highly serialized shows becomes some boring repetitive character drama/soap opera pretty fast after the novelty of the settings is over. But obviously some of them can be very intelligent or not. That's completely beside the point.

Well, considering it ran for four seasons... ;)

I believe what Checkmate is referring to is that the type of story telling you are advocating results in story telling where the events of one week don't matter the next week except in rare circumstances, that essentially events don't have consequences. Many of us find that to be boring, lazy story telling, especially in an age with so many available avenues to stay current on a show's plot lines. If Alphas had been a primarily episodic series, I would've bailed before the season was half-done.
