You're right. I looked back over my records and I never paid more than about $55 average per season. Though, CBS may put TNG at a higher MSRP to pay for the added costs involved with bringing it to Blu-ray. Hopefully not.

Just another reason I wish These Are the Voyages... never aired. People would have never seen those scenes in Ten Forward and would be more prone to leave well enough (= OAR) alone.

So it doesn't look like shit on an HD TV? Seriously, why is this such a problem for people? It's what they did with TOS and it looks great. Can't we just increase the resolution and then leave the show alone? Cutting out half the picture, are you mad?

All the speculation notwithstanding, I still think there's a 60-40 chance or better that it'll be in 4:3. I'm fine with it.

I'm actually in favor of 16:9. The only thing I seriously care for is the visual effects. I have nothing against the repeating stock shots, quite to the contrary, I think it's part of the charm of the show. And if they recomposite the footage in HD, and only do the planets, nebulas, shield effects, weapons fire, etc as CGI, and keep the model work, it's going to look awesome.
Everything else I'm fine with.

The director, producer, editor etc never signed off HD versions. Do you not think they'd have done things differently had they known how much detail would be picked up? Various little injokes never intended to be visable might now be.

They did the sets up before Generations, when they knew they would be seen in more detail.

So reframing is no different to presenting in higher clarity than originally intended either. Ideally the original directors should be bought in as consultants, to sign them off again.

I'd be very surprised if they didn't do both 4:3 and 16:9. TOS was done as both.

I'd say it's quite a bit different. For the most part, the resolution output would have been largely irrelevant to artistic choices made by the director.
The 4:3 ratio, however, would have influenced every single shot that was filmed throughout the show's run. Reframing it now would spoil almost every shot, all the way through. Making it HD would spoil the occasional shot, and improve the rest.

The principle of "it wasn't signed off looking like this" might be the same in both examples, but the effect of that isn't.

EDIT: I should add (again) that I don't mind them changing things. I don't need to know the original directors and editors approve of the new masters. That's not important to me. I just don't want the show's composition messed up.

TOS was only shown in 16:9 in Asian markets, wasn't it? It was purely cropped; I don't think CBS Digital had much, if anything, to do with that.
If you want the TNG Blu-rays cropped the same way, your TV will do it for you!

We are not going to agree on this, so there's no point arguing the point. How much picture we may/may not lose is a debatable point. Personally, I dont want to see the black bars down the side. It may not bother some people, but it does me.

Won't stop me buying the set either way though.

If the original film supports it, I'd say go for 16:9 format, Widescreen TV's have been the norm for at least a decade.

The live action shots were purely cropped, but the new CGI outer space shots actually had additional visual information on the sides. Those renders had to come from somewhere, so the widescreen conversion was at least somewhat supported by the original remastering project.

The absolute dearth of clear info so far (unless I seriously overlooked something) and the resulting suspense are really killing me. I want to know what exactly they've done already!

Did they actually recover and rescan the negatives that were believed destroyed at one point and redo the post? Or is this an upscale of the video sources? And did they replace the space shots with CGI or remaster the model shots? So many questions ...

If we had to make a list of what is most likely so far, it's this:

1. A sampler disc is being released, probably in Dec 2011. 4 Episodes including farpoint will likely be on it.
2. It will most likely be in it's original format 4:3.
3. The negatives exist according to at least 3 sources including one of the STNG editors. Therefore they were were scanned into a digital scanner for conversion to HD. It is not an UPREZ!
4. They will likely recover as many original model shots and FX on film to save time.
5. CGI will be used to replace a certain percentage of FX shots on film, and ALL FX that were added to video.

Thanks for the summary, RAMA!

I do hope they preserve the model shots - in TOS-R I was extremely happy with the remastered live action shots, including the new matte paintings and various effects replacements, but the space CGI was rather a mixed bag and doesn't appear to be CBS Digital's strong suit. (Actually - is CBS Digital doing the TNG remaster as well, or is this a new contractor?)

Sadly, looking way, way ahead, doing a DS9 remaster would be even harder, given the use of CGI in the latter seasons ... no negatives to scan, and I doubt they rendered at 2k back then.

Sad to say, but I doubt any other series will get an HD treatment except for Enterprise for bluray. Enjoy the STNG work while you can.

The same crew (based on Levar Burton's photo) from CBS, with the usual additions/subtractions will be working on it. My guess is the crew may be slightly larger.

I'm certain I've read somewhere on the trekmovie.com site that following the TNG remastering project, DS9 and voyager were to follow. (it was some while ago)

I'll always remain hopeful - it wasn't too long ago that TNG-R was considered impossible as well, since it didn't seem economically feasible to redo the post-production even if the negatives were available. Granted, technically it still hasn't proven economically feasible considering we're not having this conversation after having enjoyed an evening with "All Good Things..." in HD, but I'm optimistic these will sell well enough to keep them going. The audience for the other shows surely is smaller, and the increase in complexity is significant, so cost will have to come down by a lot more, but perhaps it will happen some day regardless.
