I think I'm about make a life changing decision.

True, but the military is a hell of a commitment. At least with going back to school you have the option to take a semester off if you need to.

But isn't 30 considered "old" to start military service?

At one time didn't they even have an age limit? Of course, now that recruiting is down, things might be different.

On active duty, probably, yeah, plus four in reserve duty - all initial military contracts are for eight years. Still doesn't make it a bad deal, necessarily, as not all teaching fields offer solid employment prospects these days. What subject would you like to teach, Aldo?

I'm interested in teaching Elementary. Primarily in the 4th-6th grade ranges.

I want to be able to get a group of students, and work with them the entire year. Hopefully in the process imparting in them the wisdom that if you don't take school seriously and slack off you'll essentially waste your life (in essence what I've been doing these past five years).

^ Cool. Well, in that case, good luck, hombre. I know how great it is to discover clarity of purpose. :bolian:

Generally speaking, AFAIK, for those without prior service, Naval enlistments have an age limit of 30, and the Army 35 (went up to 40 during the height of Iraq, but came back down). Can't speak for the other services.

I realize Aldo is interested in a teaching career, but forgive me for saying this. Isn't a teacher's salary not all that much different from working in retail? Also, a lot of teachers get laid off, too. Unless he wants to be a college professor.

It very much depends upon the area. Teachers in wealthy Massachusetts towns are paid quite well (with rises in pay based upon years of service and education). Also, you'll notice that Aldo has had trouble getting full-time work in retail, and it's not guaranteed that he will be able to rise to management without additional education and (annoyingly enough) previous management experience.

Teachers also have the option to make more money with continuing education. My mom takes classes every couple summers and gets a bump in pay every time she does.

Plus, with summers off you could potentially pick up another seasonal job to keep making money if you want.

Snaploud was correct. I've been stuck in a part time job for the last two years. I'm trying to make do with 200 dollars a week, and I'm just barely doing it.

^before bills?

Yes, actually. After I pay off my bills, I end up with about a hundred dollars a week for food and recreational purchases (which I admit I make none of those kind of purchases anymore).

You make $200/week and still have $100 leftover every week after you've paid your bills?

Damn, I wish I had your bills.

I may be a bit off. I've never sat down and figured it out week to week. I get paid every other week. I'm just trying to average it out.

In what part of the country is $12/hour enough for "fun money"? After tax withholding you maybe have $400/week, or $1600/month. That might be enough for rent, groceries, and car insurance, but it doesn't leave much besides.

The South. I make $10 an hour and still have enough money to do everything I want... no wife and kids to support though.I do work 6 days a week, though.

Not really sure how taking a couple courses in a subject constitutes a back-up plan. I majored in Accounting, and it hasn't helped me out one damn bit.
Sorry to hear that.
It's all good. I hated Accounting anyway.

1. "A couple of courses" in accounting is completely and utterly pointless. Getting hired in accounting takes a LOT more than a couple of courses. These days, it takes a Bachelors Degree (a Masters doesn't hurt either) and CPA after your name, which requires passage of the CPA exam and X number of hours (depending upon state license requirements) of work in the accounting industry.

'A couple of courses' in accounting will not get you hired by ANYONE. And anyone who tells you otherwise is either lying, or living in some 3rd world country where most of the population cannot even read, let alone do accounting. 'A couple of courses' in accounting will not even make you a competent bookkeeper. And frankly, it really astounds me that anyone would even imagine that 'a couple of courses' in accounting would mean anything to any employer who understands anything at all about accounting.

2. As for your major, RoJo, I assume you did not sit for the CPA exam then? Or maintain a good enough GPA to get into one of the Big 4 accounting firms?

Because that's really the only way to reach a level of success in the field. Make the good grades (A's or better), pass the CPA exam, and pay the dues of 80+ hour weeks in one of the 4 big firms.

By the time I was done with undergrad, I was so tired of Accounting that I wished I could travel back in time and change my major to something else. I definitely did not sit for the CPA, and I have absolutely no intention of ever applying for an accounting job in the future. If I had managed to land an accounting job after college, I would probably be miserable right now.

The only time since college that I have even remotely applied my accounting degree was at a baseball game when I put into place a FIFO system for the beer I was purchasing. I had a rotating inventory of 3 beers: one in my right hand, one in my left hand, and one in the cup holder. I used FIFO to determine which of those beers I needed to be drinking at any given time. :D

I got my friends to use the FIFO Beer-Drinking System as well, and they loved it. We would yell "FIFO!" in the middle of the game whenever we needed another beer.

^ I sat for the CPA exam twice. Didn't do too terribly well, AFAIK.

The only reason I majored in accounting in college is because I did well in it in high school. BIG FUCKING MISTAKE!!! I was totally unprepared for how hard it would be. Since then, I haven't used one peep of what little accounting knowledge I picked up. I have never worked anywhere near the accounting industry, and I don't even do my own taxes.

Looking back, I have no idea what I *should* have majored in, but there we are.

I totally love the 'FIFO beer system' though. I'll be recommending that to everyone I meet. :techman:

From what I understand, the majority of people have to take the CPA three times before they pass it.

I wish I had done something with English or Journalism. I would love to be an editor. I could just sit in my office all day with a red pen correcting grammatical errors.

Sour grapes though this may be, I'm actually glad I didn't become an accountant. With my personality, I would have suffered total burnout at a job like that. I would have turned out like this:

Unless you want to go in to education or unemployment, steer clear of English.

I had lots and lots of fun in the major and did rather well for myself during the program, but in terms of netting you jobs, it's not the hottest ticket out there.

Fortunately I work in an industry now where it's more about people liking you than anything else, so if I show up on time and do my work I'm pretty much set.

Oh, I know. I had friends who majored in English and History, and I usually looked at them with cock-eyed expression, thinking, "What the hell are you going to do with that degree?"

Then it turned out that business and accounting degrees were just as worthless, so I guess the joke's on me.

Honestly, I wish I could have just majored in "General Education" or "Liberal Arts" or something. I would have loved to go to college and just take a variety of different classes without having to narrow down a major. That's why, by the time I finished, I had about 40 credits more than I needed to graduate.
