This is NOTHING like old school Trek...and I don't care!

Last visited May 10, 2005, so forgive me if I'm a bit rusty.

To preface, I grew up with TOS on weekends and the family gathering around the TV for TNG. DS9 blew my mind when I was in middle/high school. I have TOS, TNG, DS9 and all of the movies sitting on my DVD shelf. I love "old school" Roddenberry-style Star Trek.

That said, I LOVE the 2009 reboot. Just spun the blu-ray to test out my new 50" plasma and the film just continues to impress. No, this is not contemplative, scientific, cerebral, or any of that, but it's goddamn entertaining. The acting is top notch, the casting is great in a "its them...but its not really them" kind of way. The effects and scale are masterful.

Was brought back to the BBS because Google gave me a thread when I wanted to know what the hell was happening in the "Laurenchian system" and I see thread after thread of sobbing and bitching. I know this is classic Trek fandom, to hate what comes later and praise what came before, but it just strikes me as incredibly stupid. If you want old school Roddenberry style Trek, watch the dozens of hours of films and HUNDREDS of hours of TV shows.

^ Yep. I remember my sister, 6 years my senior, telling me not to bother with DS9 because it wasn't as good as TNG. And my Dad refusing to watch TNG because "Picard seems like a pussy compared to Kirk."

I watched em all, enjoyed em all...even Voyager!

I saw a news blurb from some tv show on Youtube, forget which one it was but it said: "Star Trek fans Bash new ST film as 'fun and entertaining'. :guffaw::lol: Long time fans of the Star Trek franchise say JJ Abrams' enjoyable, engaging prequel betrays what Star Trek is all about."

RAMA

That was The Onion.

I just saw the film again a few days ago, while in the middle of a TOS rewatch, and I thought it was a pretty damn faithful and loving update of the original. People use the word "cerebral" a lot when comparing old and new Trek, but really, there was always a lot more fun Trek than cerebral Trek.

A lot of people seem to forget that.

Perhaps it's success is greatly due to the variety of the type of stories and genres it can delve into.

What? Again?!
Okay.
I am all that is bad and evil and tragic-wrong with Trek fandom incarnate. yadda yadda yadda canonista yadda yadda lens flare yadda yadda yadda Abomination yadda yadda
YMMV

PS: I dig the Green Girl!

People forget that TOS was as much campy fun as it was hard thoughtful SF. This new movie was a great exercise in bringing the FUN back to Trek after it had got too bogged down in continuity and minutiae.

Watching the movie I felt like I was eating Star Trek out of a bowl that someone just ate Star Wars out of and didn't quite rinse thoroughly. Not that that's a bad thing.

I look at NuTrek like Rico from Starship Troopers. It'll do until it dies or something better comes along.

Thank you, finally someone that make sense!!

You know, I don't even read this part of the forum that much anymore. It's starting to look like a Star Wars forum with fanboys whining about when Han shot and if it actually matters plotwise!

If you don't like the movie, DEAL WITH IT!!! It's not like all the complaining will cause an imbalance in the universe that can only sort itself by magically giving you the perfect Star Trek people seem to want.

This forum seems only capable to pick on Star Trek (all of it), take the things they don't like and complain and 'discuss' it. Where's the love for Star Trek these days guys? Why not more topics across the board about the things we love about these shows and movies instead of all the bashing?

Talking about how you love something is more boring than talking about how you hate it.

I like the cereal bowl analogy up there...

I completely agree1 Star Trek (the original series) is overrated as a cerebral show. When I began watching it in the 70s as a young teen I loved it because it was a fun and exciting show and I thought that the new movie was very successful in recapturing that fun essence. I found TNG to be a more cerebral show than the original.

I agree, OP.

I mean sure, dissenters, it is different, I don't deny that but I am not willing to deny the Good Times I have watching it.

Perhaps the greatest acolade for it is that for once in my life I hear people who used to hate and always diss Trek say; "You know, that's pretty cool!"

I'm used to cerebral but Trek's cerebral is often lame...it's not Issac Asimov, Orson Scott Card or Arthur Clarke cerebral. The Motion Picture is the perfect example of LAME and cerebral ideas put together. I believe people get swept up in what Gene created which was in some ways ahead of his times. Yet there were so many ridiculous story ideas.

One can't forget that Trek was really just entertaining thinking for the masses. Now they're just removing the thinking part and adding more entertainment. Sure the movie was definitely Entertaining but there is so much of that around...I can get it any where...

I think the characters were the biggest success of the film. They found people that were relatable and had good acting propps, Perhaps the next film will do much better with the story itself because of issue of the Strike before I'm not hold my breath.

As time passes, the more I don't really approve of Trek XI. I just don't think Trek belongs on the movie screen, TV is where it should be.
