Definitely a mock up, it was just nice to see a news site use it. :techman:

I would buy that over the Blu-rays if the option were presented.

Give me all 7 seasons remastered on a decent 500GB-750GB portable hard drive with a custom 24th-century Trek-style case and a USB 3.0 connector.

I'd pay up to $300AU for that, Paramount.

Why bother with all those moving parts and wires? Make it a solid state HD with wi fi if you really want to talk obsolete.

Or just put it on a plastic disc.

    Cutting edge thinking.

I'm not putting a lot (or any) stock in this gizmodo post. There's no actual information we don't already know, a whole lot of assumption, and attribution to a Digital Bits post that's several months old as well as a Slashdot post that specifically mentions the blu-ray disc talked about in newer Digital Bits posts.

We already had an early report saying it would be on Netflix first...I find that hard to believe since its taking 5-6 months to get the first 4 episodes out by Xmas.

I this isn't solid state but you get the idea..wouldn't take much to get to this level.

I could see Netflix taking the roll of syndication that TOS-R used. One new episode released each week and available for streaming on Netflix. Then once all the episodes are done, or maybe once each season is done if they work in order, the DVD/Blu Ray set will be released. That way CBS can capture some early revenue from Netflix and build PR while they continue to work on a project that could easily take multiple years to complete.

That makes sense. Then Paramount can give the rights to TNG-R to SyFy and BBC America for television airing.

You seriously don't want anything meant for long term storage on an SSD. HDDs are magnetic and keep data virtually forever. SSDs are electronic and lose integrity very fast. Heck, even data badly burned on DVDs will have a longer lifespan than data stored on SSDs.

It may not be ready for primtetime quite yet, but commercial grade SSDs are relatively new to the market. I think they can eventually find a way to mitigate degradation (one company already has a "degradation free" SSD). Also they have a lifespan relatively close to regular HDDs and don't have a lot of the problems of magnetic drives, like susceptibility to magnetic surges.

You need a fast internet connection to stream a film or DVD even at SD never mind HD. So blu-ray even DVD isn't going anytime soon.

As others have mentioned, I have had more HD failures than damged DVDs/Blu-ray

Maybe on Netflix just the 4 preview episodes will be in HD at first, and then later on the rest will start to come online as they are updated.

Either way I'll be buying the Blu-rays. Much better quality, even on my 720p TV.

I like that hard drive idea further upthread, in fact I LOVE it. That's all I'm going to do anyway, is to dump the BR to a hard drive and play them on my Roku-equivalent device.

I have never been this excited for a home video release EVER... Roll on december and hopefully seasons 1-7 in 2012.
