Funny, I had been watching Star Trek more than 20 years before I heard anyone suggest that the bridge dome from the opening shot in "The Cage" was supposed to be literally a transparent dome. I always thought it was just a figurative shot to establish the action on the bridge. And that's still the way I prefer to think of it.

Yeah... they pretty much scuttled all the details on the saucer dome. But why let a little thing like that bother you?
The details are built into the new ship, as opposed to the afterthought addition in the originals.

For the most part I like what they've done, so I'd say about a 2/3 of the way thumbs up from me. One thing I don't like is arbitrary/whimsical changes. A good example is "The Enterprise Incident" where they changed one of the D-7s to a BoP. Why? If they change a re-used effect/ship like the DY-100/Woden or Tholian/Aurora that's OK (to me

They not only missed the detailing on the bridge dome they still have a turbo lift lined up where it couldn't possibly be.
I do wish they had changed the line up of the turbo lift.
I agree. I've seen the same kind of transition--starting with some object or shape on the screen (usually a circle or oval) and expanding into the next scene--in dozens of old movies. It's just a nifty dissolve, although here it was also used to efficiently clue the audience in on where the bridge was actually located.
Where's that blue shirt going? A stroll on the hull?
Maybe that's why they had a guard stationed at that door in "The Cage"!

The originals. I like the way the effects looked and don't care to watch them with new ones. I don't mind that they did it, because the originals are still available.
The only way to have done that would have been to change the ship's orientation as it approaches. ^ Actually, if the original effect was, indeed, just a scene transition and not meant to imply a "glass roof," then it's even worse: By trying to depict an actual window, the new effects introduced the turbo lift alignment error to the scene.
I wouldn't have had a problem with the original, but now that there is a remastered, i mch prefer it. The colors are more vibrant. The audio clearer. Most importantly, the space scenes are much much better. Definitely improves the experience.

I'm not really known for being an "Embrace the Changes" kind of guy. Not really.
BUT, my grumbles about the remastered eps died a quick and sorrowful death the moment I saw a Gorn starship on the screen. The Gorn have real ships now, not just whirly sparkle star thingies!
And the Mario Bava-esque background colors...I just love them.
Still keeping my old original version ep dvds, but if I ever actually upgrade to a Blue Ray...

I see you two have your Nostalgia Filters at maximum. It's good to know that no matter how shoddy the original product was, there are still people who will die for it. No wait, not "good", "predictable" is the word I should have used!
