^ Yeah, I know what you mean. Maybe a in medias res opening, with all of the heroes present, would have worked better. Then go to Gotham with Batman and Green Lantern.
Uh... the comic shop in my town closed up shop two years ago. Can I download these comics for my iPad? Should I? Or is it not all it's cracked up to be?
Try it once, if you don't like it, it's only a few bucks per comic.
Also, the older books are 1.99 or .99 cents and there are sales on selected books every week.
I've read the issue - thought it had its moments, particularly the epic scale of the first panel's narrative voice - and I've just read the Lee/Johns interview. It's probably not worth thinking about how Flashpoint actually works, except for cheap laughs: how exactly does Barry Allen trying to save his mom genetically modify parademons created a thousand years ago on a distant plant?

I've just looked at that, too. I think it looks great - Morrison has really caught the tone of the earliest "Superman vs Corruption" stories in the 30s and 40s. (My favorite is the one where Superman traps a corrupt mine-owner in his own mine, convincing him to improve conditions ... I've taught a superhero course, and those early stories really shock students.)
I'm the opposite.
I dont' even recognize the character I just saw in that 8 page preview. I've read Superman off/on since the 80's and picked my share of 60s/70s stories and that character was someone else wearing an homage Superman costume.
Pass. Probably even on the TPB.
Well, on the plus side, any regrets I had about missing Morrison's sweet new take have been favorably resolved.
Morrison has talked about taking Superman back to his roots. I got that impression as well from book. I still like to keep in mind that we're basically going to be reading a retooling of what he would have done for his proposed Superman: Year One project which intended to be a prequel to "All Star Superman" only of course this is in the past of the relaunch continuity. Even prior to Justice League.
He stole that from Jim Kirk.
As mentioned, you'd have to read the Superman stories from the 30s and 40s to recognized this version. Its not only scraping off the barnacles, but a few coats of paint as well.
As I say, Morrison's early Superman looks entirely like the original Superman - anti-bully, vaguely socialist, sometimes a jerk. For me, it'll come down to whether Morrison's Superman becomes anything more than an uncanny mimicry.

Exactly so - the 60s is not nearly far enough back to go, to find this version of Superman. In fact I think this particular vignette is a pretty direct homage to one of Supes' earliest adventures.
I love what Morrison's doing here: how Clark started as an unruly young vigilante who had no particular regard for police and government authority where he saw them as corrupt or inept, and (so it's being said) how he becomes Superman as he's known today.
Wonder if he'll get a chance to take on some corrupt "defense contractors" and industrialists who are fucking up the developing world for money, before he settles down? That would be very traditional early Superman.
I'm sure we'll at least get to see Supes manhandle some guy for beating his girlfriend or spouse.

Grant Morrison writing Superman is pretty much an automatic win. I can't think of another writer who actually makes me excited to read a Superman comic - generally he is pretty boring on the comic page.
All Star Superman is still my favorite Superman comic story ever.
