Alien 4: Resurection.. any films similar to it?

ReadyAndWilling

Fleet Captain
hey guys, i'm watching it now and i really love the sci-fi gritty feel of it. i love the story background, the environments are great and so are many of the characters. i love the dichotomy of the robot and the aliens, even the central computer voice is great.

are there any other similar movies? i really like judge dredd and it's similar in some ways. are there any newer movies or are are they exclusive to this era?

i'm not a fan of the alien movies. i know this movie has a huge negative rep amongst the alien fans, but what i don't know is why. why does this have such a negative rep amongst the fan community? what made this movie so bad compared to the others?

thanks

Delicatessen comes to mind, as it was also directed by Jeunet. And let's say City of Lost Children while one is at it.

While I don't think A:R is anywhere near as bad as people claim, I think it's probably the weakest of the Alien films. I mostly blame the weird Alien Baby.

I do think A:R has a lot of cool Ripley character moments, though. One that sticks out in my head is her reaction to the drawing of the little girl when they're trying to teach her how to speak.

That is a nice character moment with Ripley -- although it's only in the extended version, IIRC.

Ah. I marathoned through all four movies a while back when I got the anthology on Blu-Ray, but I don't remember which versions I watched.

Whichever version of Alien I watched I found extremely boring. It was not the version I was used to seeing.

The same director did City Of Lost Children and Delicatessen. You might like those and they have much of the same cast.

It's the "compared to the others" part that makes it percieved as bad - it's a fun SF action flick. On its own it'd be seen that way, but being tagged onto a completed trilogy hurts it.

And, yeah, Firefly (series) or Serenity (movie) would be a good choice to follow it up with.

Other Sci-Fi horror movies I'm familiar with:
Event Horizon
Ghosts of Mars
Pandorum
Pitch Black

I can't endorse them since I'm not a really big fan of the sub genre but there's a few.

I do actually recommend this movie though, King of Thorn.

Event Horizon is awesome. A very unique blend of outer space adventure and horror.

Pitch Black is good, too. Nothing particularly amazing, but entertaining.

There were a number of Alien VS Predator videogames and a few movies, but I don't think the franchise had any animated installments.
