I thought that was probably the case - must be a bit dispiriting if you slave to produce a novel you are proud of and then hate the cover though !

Not approval, but I've sometimes been allowed to offer input or make suggestions, depending on the editor. For instance, Marco Palmieri let me see the draft cover for Over a Torrent Sea and clarify some things for the artist about Selkie anatomy. And it was my suggestion to use the Shepherd Gate Clock on Watching the Clock's cover, though my idea was very different from what ended up being used (I was thinking of something like the cover for The Best and the Brightest, a "cast portrait" of the main characters posing by the clock).

That's not supposed to be the Enterprise on The Rings of Time cover, is it?

Love the others, especially the fact that Christopher's new book is being labelled 'DTI.'

It's presumably a preliminary sketch of the cover design, just a suggestion of what the actual cover will look like.

That is indeed the Enterprise . . . unless somebody stuck another starship into my book when I wasn't looking! :)

Well, it could've been Colonel Christopher's ship. Probably wasn't, but, still. ;)

Michael actually made a mockup cover for A Choice of Catastrophes that he passed onto Jaime Costas when she asked if we had ideas. I don't know if the eventual cover artist saw it, but there were some elements in common.

I have no idea (well...other than the author of the book says that it's the Enterprise, but what does he know? ;) )

However, that is definitely the Enterprise on the Storming Heaven cover. A little full circle maybe?

Oh ok wow! I hadn't noticed that. My first thought was actually I wonder if that's the Enterprise, but then I got destracted looking at the other covers and the blurb and I never looked close enough to see what ship it was. Though wasn't there another not-final cover that had the Enterprise, and it was eventually changed to another ship?

It's just as possible that Drexler is still working on it and hasn't swapped out the markings on the 3D model yet.

I really like the cover to DTI: Forgotten History, the others not so much.

Oh... most likely. I'm willing to bet it'll end up being the Endeavor. That's why they say the covers aren't final. Although the full circle idea (the Enterprise in the first and last books of the series) has a certain coolness to it, I think I'd be pretty disappointed as I like how Vanguard has been able to stand on its own without any major TOS characters. Bringing the Enterprise in might end up pulling a "These are the Voyages" on Vanguard, and that would be a shame.

Despite not liking the cover, I am looking forward to Greg Cox's book as well.

I am looking forward to all four books. How ever I don't like the cover to Mr.cox's even though I can't wait till they all come out. "storming heaven and forgotten history" best covers all away around on the four. damn shame that this will be the last of the vanguard sereis. will there be a spin off do you think?

The cover for The Rings of Time is fantastic! We need more impressionistic covers.

    Love the other artwork too.

I like the Vanguard and DTI covers, the one for That Which Divides is a bit lackluster - I do like the color scheme and the font but the actual image is a bit simple IMO.

As for the Vanguard cover - I'm sorry we won't get to see any of the characters on the cover but at the same time I'm very pleased with the continuing theme of depicting the station on the cover. Of the four, it's the only one I'll be certain to get, still debating the DTI one as I loved the first book but I'm not much of a TOS fan...

I like the "Rings of Time" cover too. I don't think its a concept drawing, it just looks like they were going for a "60s sci-fi cover art" vibe. Back in the 60s and 70s, and a little bit in the 80s, a lot of sci-fi books had covers like these. Hand painted spaceships, often stylized with blurry watercolor edges, and very bulbous like the Enterprise is depicted here.

There was a famous painter named John Berkey who used to do that sort of thing; it was a very distinctive art style. (He may not be the only one who did them, I'm not sure.) I remember when he did the box art for the video game Star Control 3 and I felt like I was stepping back through time to my childhood just looking at it.

Anyhow, it reminds me of the covers of the sci-fi books I used to read as a kid. Fits with the title, too - I keep thinking "old school sci fi" when I read it - "The Rings of Time." :)
