Original, or Remastered?

Gonna have to disagree with you on that, Dennis. There's a shot in TMP of the mostly-dark Enterprise zipping past the camera and it works completely.

Which one? There's not that much in TMP that I think "works completely," but "mostly dark" is no more similar to being lit in high contrast by one or two sources than being flooded with fill light is. There are shots in TMP and a few of the other movies where the ship is visually defined mainly by the windows and internal light sources.

Anyway, my point was not that ILM lit the Enterprise to look big, but the opposite: they couldn't effectively use the techniques they used on Star Wars to convey size because those don't achieve the same effect on an object like the Enterprise. And they were still working with physical objects and real light - when you get into CG, the "lighting" that most closely approximates real physics remains extremely mathematically intensive and beyond the time and server resources of many television productions. You fall back on tricks.

Jim insisted on "The Tressaurian Intersection" that we light the CG model in as similar a manner to TOS as we could. I'm not sure how successful it was, but I do know that it involved no attempt at all to simulate how such a physical object might appear in orbital space under full sunlight much less in deep space.

Depends on my mood and/or where I'm watching. If I'm at my 52 inch HD, I will probably go to the new effects (but always the mono sound mix), but have been known to watch the originals on the big screen. If I'm in the den with the smaller tube set, I always go for the originals from Laserdisc. They look fine on the lower resolution set and bring back that feeling of when I watched the show was a youngsta.

I do not have an issue with outdated SFX and they don't hamper my enjoyment of a damned good series. I never watched Trek for the effects anyway.

I dunno. I fell in love with the original and the new version doesn't take away from that at all. If anything it intensifies what's already there.

I own the DVD sets of both, and while I prefer the originals (Nostalga, it IS the version I grew up with, after all), I bought the remastered versions out of curiosity (I didn't watch when they were being aired), and the new version has it's charms too.

In fact, I can think of at least one case where the remastering didn't go far enough. In "The Ultimate Computer", I was hoping we'd see different classes of starships going up against the Enterprise in the war games scenes, but all they did was update what we'd already seen. At least they changed the ore freighter from being a copy of the Botany Bay.

That said, I can watch either version, and I'm fine with that.

Watched an original episode then decided to watch it remastered and have to say i would probably no longer watch the original as the remastered versions are so much clearer and have been cleaned up wonderfully.

But you can watch the episodes cleaned up without the new effects on the Blu-ray sets.

That's my preferred way of watching them. :techman:

Although I can enjoy the newfx as well.

We as fans are really lucky that TPTB designed the bluray to give us the choice.

Indeed. Plus im too lazy to switch to the original on the blu-ray but something about the remastered which gives the series a 'fresh' feel so to speak. Then again i guess as already stated it depends on what mood you're in as to which version you decide to watch, perhaps me saying i would probably no longer watch an original version is a bit harsh, i would image i will when the mood takes me :-)

I only got into the series when the new fx were made available. I used to be a new fx only fan, but over time i've come to prefer the old fx.

The biggest improvement in the Remastered version are the mattes - some of them are subtle improvements and some are spectacular. "The Doomsday Machine" is probably the most disappointing re-do in general.

This'll surprise you, but
Yup to all of that. DM actually changes how the Ent feels as a character. The mattes almost redeem the whole project from the sins of the cartoony Ent. If the cartoony Ent shots were in a high quality animated series, I'd be all for 'em.

And they look terrible...

The older FX always looked pretty grainy. The HD really does accentuate the graininess of it.

I still like what they were able to do for the era and occasionally I do pop in one of the DVDs instead of the BD, the same as I do for the original SW trilogy.

Cant be bothered to move down on menu to select original version :-) told you was too lazy ;-p
