Just a bit of a teaser for now as I try to finalize the layout...

Minor nit: It was the SS Beagle, not USS. She was a Federation ship, but not Starfleet.

I suggest a registry prefix of NAS.

I know; I went with the precedent set with the Huron (from TAS) which was referred to as SS Huron in dialog even though her hull carried the USS. Which is why the registry has the S in it, like the Huron's funky F.

She was a Federation ship, but not Starfleet.
I'm speculating, since it wasn't established in dialog, that the "merchant service" is similar to the MSC of our era. And Merak, while a civilian, was still bound by those pesky Starfleet rules. And Kirk, therefore, had legal jurisdiction in the matter.

I'm having trouble reading the small writing. Can you put an image of Kirk's Enterprise next to your Beagle to scale for comparison?

Not bad. Definitely Daedalus lineage.
And a little Bonaventure as well. Nice.
Thanks guys.

The mini-story that ran through my head was
-that she was originally a Starfleet scout-type vessel
-that she was about 60 years old at the time of B & C (launched between 2200 and 2210)
-that she had been refitted several times over her history, the last time around 2245
-and that she had been transferred to the merchant service around 2255.

I also wanted her to fit into Merak's decision to stay on the planet. Being old, cramped and out-dated yet at the same time vaguely hinting at the starship he couldn't achieve seemed to support that notion.

Sorry, missed this comment and apologize for the tardiness of the response. Don't have a readily available 1701 but the Type F shuttlecraft is to scale (at 26 ft, per Warped9 ;) , IIRC)

Her dimensions:
L..............430 ft / 131.1 m
W.............193 ft / 58.8 m
PH W........150 ft / 45.7 m
Nacelle L...278 ft / 84.7 m
Eng H L.....188 ft / 57.3 m
