First looks at Jason Momoa as Conan...

I might see this. My mom wants to see The Help and I want see this, so we might go the theater and then split off and see the stuff we want to see.

There's also a tie-in collection of Howard stories. It's a mass market paperback, with Momoa on the cover, but I can't remember which stories are in it.

I saw that at my bookstore a week or so back. Damnedest thing.

Quite frankly, though, anyone interested in the Robert E. Howard stories should get the Del Rey/Gollancz editions, as they're based on the manuscripts where available and are arranged in order of writing. I read that myself over the last few months and it was some good stuff.

Ah, I had one of those on my Nookbook wishlist but decided to switch it out for this because I wanted to movie cover, but it sounds like I should switch it back.

I was going to ask the $68,000 question - how does this movie compare with the Ah-nold incarnations - but I think you answered it:

Jason Momoa as Conan is very charismatic and fierce.
Conan now has a personality, good.

If the movie also gives a better sense of epic scope and grandeur of being transported to an amazing, magical world where it's an everyday occurrence for people to worship giant spider gods with ichor dripping from their foot-long fangs, or thieves to break into cavernous treasure-troves stocked with mountains of jewels and gold beyond the dreams of avarice, then that would be good to know as well. :D

^ Hm. Looks like they took it down.

Basically, the reviewer wrote that the direction is as bland and lifeless as Nispel's other movies (Pathfinder, Friday the 13th & Texas Chainsaw Remakes), the script is awful, and that Momoa is okay as a physical actor but terrible at delivering dialogue.

I think you may be disappointed in that respect. There's not really any background given about the gods or the history of the culture, and there aren't any mountains of jewels.
