STAR TREK: THE NEW VOYAGES (TOS)

Does anyone know the name of the artist that created the covers for the TOS books written by fans: STAR TREK: THE NEW VOYAGES, and the sequel, and Joe Haldeman's book: PLANET OF JUDGMENT?

Thanks, Dan.

That was Eddie Jones, who sometimes signed his Star Trek covers "Fantoni."

I have always looked the way Enterprise looks in those covers. It seems like an actual piece of machinery to me the way he's drawn it. I've see n alot of depictions where Enterprise just looks like a drawing of a spaceship, here it looks like a drawing of an actual spaceship, if that makes any sense.

I have a related question. Does anyone know who painted the late 1990s New Voyages covers? Was it the same artist responsible for the reissues of Spock, Messiah!, Spock Must Die!, and the Phoenix novels?

The New Voyages
The New Voyages 2
The Price of the Phoenix
The Fate of the Phoenix
Spock, Messiah!
Spock Must Die!

According to the copyright page, the covers for the entire 1990's reprint were all done by Kazuhiko Sano. I really like them!

Wow. Apparently, he also painted the poster for Return of the Jedi. He died a few months ago, unfortunately.

Thanks, I didn't think to look on the copyright page.

I agree. The ENTERPRISE is shown in an a scene that's truly out of this world. Somehow, the cover strangely conveys to me a hint of a secret mission the ENTERPRISE must be on, and the dangers and challenges are too hard to figure out - so, you must buy the book! Truly a masterpiece of art and imagination - not just in what you see, but in the way the art makes you think about it. Dan.

Why is it covers have to be changed when the changed covers are worse then the original covers? Spock Must Die is an example of a cover being changed to a truly awful cover.

The changed Phoenix covers are awful too. I liked the original covers.

I was researching the Spock Must Die! covers for one of my blogs just the other day (link). I agree many of the later editions aren't as interesting as the first (which is a pretty-unusual-for-Star-Trek manipulated photo), but my favourite is the most recent reprint.

^Yeah, that last cover is cool. The '74 Corgi one is weird -- Spock looks so elfin.

And I think the painting of the two Spocks on the transporter pad is inaccurate -- didn't one of the Spocks get inverted and have his insignia on the wrong side (though nobody thought to notice until he'd had a chance to change)? Still, not a bad painting. Is that Boris Vallejo's signature in the lower right?

It's possible the original cover artists' contracts specified an additional royalty if republished after a certain time. Also, some these reprints were intended to rival the new Pocket titles, even enlarging the "Star Trek" title to the same sized font as Pocket's. To ride on the coat tails of Pocket's then-popularity and make the Bantam novels appear less "old".

Not Vallejo, it's Bob Larkin, who did several great covers for not-so-great books (Mudd's Angels, Vulcan!, etc.)

Did a search before starting a new thread and found this, so...

I picked up a copy of the original 1976 New Voyages book at a local used book store for $0.50. I was wondering what people's opinions were about this one.

^^^
Mixed bag. Personally, my favorites were "Mind Sifter" and the Ruth Berman story where the TOS actors end up on the Enterprise - kind of Galaxy Quest 30 years before the fact..

I loved it. The Pocket novels hadn't come out yet, and try as I could I just couldn't get into any of the original Bantam novels at the time, but I really enjoyed both New Voyages and New Voyages 2. I have to agree with Mysterion about those two stories being the best ones, though!
