Anonymous to "destroy" Facebook on Nov. 5

I'm curious to see if something actually happens. With the advance warning being talked about, there's gotta be someone capable of back-tracking the internet addresses and isolating and/or eliminating that general area (state / county) from access until further notice. And then further trimming things back to a town/city, neighborhood, etc. until the turd in question gets schooled by a bunch of pissed-off federal/state prisoners denied their instant messenger cybersex / porn fix.

The Internet does not work that way!

Sure it does. All you have to do is reverse the polarity of the neutron flow.

Actually, you might be able to, or at least narrow it down to a location. There are over 4 billion possible IPv4 addresses, and 340 undecillion IPv6 addresses (that's a 1 followed by 36 zeroes). It's a fairly simple matter to log the IP address of someone who's trying to access your server, and with the cooperation of ISPs, you could probably find out exactly who was attacking you - unless they're using a proxy (which I imagine any hacker worth his or her salt would, though there are probably some pretty stupid hackers out there).

Though I don't think you could firewall off the area, unless they were behind the Great Firewall of China or something similar.

Likely they are cutting their own throats. When they make a big deal about their attacks they start to draw the attention of the world's police and intelligence services. They aren't as shielded as they think. Likely they have a half-dozen agents acting like fellow hackers and gathering info on them right now. One minute they are sitting fat and happy behind their keyboard, the next their door gets knocked down and they are doing the perp walk.

I wouldn't be too sad to see Facebook go if they were serious. I have another site that I love much much more.

But seriously, they couldn't take Facebook down. And if they could I might applaud them.

I'm actually a little worried about this. Anon is kind of scary when they put their minds to things. I'm also hopelessly Facebook-addicted.

You are correct that they can nail down a location into a relatively small area. I wasn't disputing that. But no one's going to firewall off an entire area just to fend off some potentially imaginary attack. No ISP is going to do it without a court order, and the impact on legitimate customers would be big enough that the ISP would fight it like crazy. The last thing they'd want is a bunch of pissed off customers.

The must be stopped. Won't somebody think of all the farms that will go into disrepair? The crops not picked, the barns not built, the sheep not sheared, and the eggs not collected?

The horror!

Imagine how much money Jobs could have earned for selling the location data of the iPhones of Obama, Sarkozy and Co. That's the sort of stuff a terrorist gets wet dreams about.

Why the hell would the government spend money on that?

1) They already know who you are, where you live,, how long you lived there, where you work, how much you're paid for said work, and who your spouse and children are. If you itemize, they know where you shop, and what non-profits you donate to as well. They know what tax breaks you collect, and what benefits you take. If you're in Medicare/Medicaid they know what's right/wrong with your health.

2) The last thing a bunch of overworked bureaucrats want or need is a massive pile of data in which to parse every day in pursuit of some vague goal of "knowing your whereabouts" and whatever that implies. Especially when they could be doing work that accomplishes an actual goal, like getting their TPS and G3953920 reports in on time.

3) If the government wants to find you, they just tell everyone they're looking for you. You know, issue a warrant, declare you a "person of interest". Something straight to the point, rather than the Rube Goldberg circuitous route of secretly grabbing EVERYONE's information, just to track down an individual, or a small group of people.

They're the government, they NEVER have to hide from you.

Maybe I'm misreading JR's post but he wasn't talking about the government collecting data on citizens, but rather terrorists getting their hands on the iPhone location data of political leaders. Which I agree would be pretty fucking valuable if you were a terrorist and wanted to off a President or a Prime Minister or any other political figure.
