Please link to one of my comments where my opinions had zero basis. Yes, there are many things I like, but floppity flop flopps that I can notice from 2 years away aren't things I like. Simple as that.

Why are you posting in these threads then if you don't care or think they're going to be flops? You've made your point that should be enough for you.

I care about my favorite characters and don't want them ruined. I can voice my opinions here however I see fit. Why the fuck do you have a problem with that?

I don't care about what your opinion is, and you're free to express them however you wish, it just is amazing to me that you can spot a flop without any footage or anything else. No need to get touchy about it. I care about these characters too, but I'm not going to judge the films until I actually get something to actually judge them about.

Apologies. Being burned a few times after understanding the horribleness of it (IM2, GL, XM:FC, Supes:Returns) from the start and the end product not swaying my judgement but rather reinforcing it.. well, you get the idea ;)

As said, Brando's Jor-El accent sounded British, IMO. Even though it's a reboot, characters must still be recognisable. Superman must still have upstanding morality/humanity, Mr. Mxyzyzptlk must still be a trickster, General Zod must still want to dominate Earth and have humans worship him, etc. Besides, many roles often use British accents, since (according to producers/directors) it sounds more commanding and authoritative. It's a common use in Hollywood.

^ That makes no sense at all. If this is a personal preference of yours to have Jor-El have a British accent (which he didn't in Superman either films, not sure that you've been exposed to a lot of British accents if you think Brando was speaking in one) that's fine. How do you know that the characters won't be still recognizable in this reboot? We've only seen Superman so far. I really don't understand what point you are trying to make at all. Except that Russell Crowe is wrong for the part and that Marlon Brando was using a British accent.

^ @indolover: You don't think that Jor-El could be identified by having the House of El crest on his outfit? Or by someone calling him Jor-El in his first scene?

And can you not think of any non-British actors who sound commanding and authoritative? Must be news to Morgan Freeman, Tommy Lee Jones, Mel Gibson, Dennis Haysbert...

Not to mention the fact that as I pointed out in an earlier post, Crowe is at least as capable of Brando of doing a British accent.

Not all of the films you mention there were flops, though. So you may be able to forecast, with very little to go on, what your opinion will be of the final product in terms of quality, but you haven't demonstrated the ability to accurately predict box office failure.

It is very important to go into any movie with an open mind. A preconceived supposition will only serve to support a confirmation bias.

While liking any artistic entertainment is subjective our minds have a way of finding evidence that will confirm our prejudices.

I was born and raised in the UK, I think I have a good understanding of what a British accent is. I think that Brando in the 1978 film had a British accent for Jor-El. I see you have not countered my opinion in this regard, and evidently I'm not the only one who thinks as such:

Forget it, I don't even understand why you are arguing. For what it is worth, British accents are used in Hollywood to give characters a more authoritative air. As I said, it's common.

No one didn't say that using British accents wasn't common in hollywood. We know that for instance George Lucas used a lot of British actors for the Imperials in "Star Wars" and I apologize for saying you might not be able to detect a British accent then if you live in the UK. As for countering, people along with myself have stated that Brando wasn't using a British accent, he was pretty much being himself. If you know the production story of his time with the character you would know how much of a pain in the ass he was to deal with and as others have joked what he tried to do with the role of Jor-El.

I love Brando as Jor-El, but I'm also open to other actors portraying the role as well. I'm not sure why you didn't understand what Captaindemotion's points were either. He was pretty clear in his post what he was trying to sate. It seems to me that you aren't willing to accept another actor in the role of Jor-El and that's fine. The role does not have to be portrayed as "British" though.

Empire Magazine put Brando on a list of the Worst British Accents Ever for his role in Mutiny on the Bounty, although their descrition of his accent as "sounding like a half-drunk member of the House Of Lords trying to find a bit of fluff" actually makes it sound like a genius acting choice on Brando's part.

Bad accent or not, the movie wouldn't be worth watching except for Brando and Trevor Howard's performances.

I wonder if the poster was basing his opinion of Brando's accent on how the dialogue was in the Krypton scenes. If I remember correctly, according to the commentary for Superman: The Movie, they wrote the Krypton scenes with a stylized dialogue which they referred to as very formal and almost Shakespearean in tone. Presumably they were directed to match the style of the dialogue. Perhaps that is where the initial confusion is coming from.
