Miracle Day Immortality Thoughts

Getting back to speculating on everyone's immortality, I suspect that in keeping with how gloomy things tend to turn out in Torchwood, that everyone who "dies" while all this stuff is happening will ultimately end up ACTUALLY dead when the crisis is resolved. From what we've seen so far, people are receiving fatal trauma but while they aren't dying, they aren't healing as Jack would have done. In effect, we've got a bunch of walking dead on our hands, who will expire once someone flips the inevitable switch in episode ten.

As much as I've been getting to like some of these characters so far, I seriously doubt many of them will be returning for a fifth series should Starz so desire...

I'm not sure I agree with people aren't healing. Rex had a 3 inch across hole from his chest through his back. He left the hospital barely able to walk. Now he's well enough to run around, have sex with a woman on top of him, is only oozing a little blood, compared to the gusher a hole like that would cause. I think it's evident he most definitely is healing. Sure, not healing from death in 30 seconds, but definitely getting better, at least at a normal rate (How many people who really experienced the trauma to their body that Rex did and survived would be doing the things he's doing less than a month later? Seems to me, it's only been a few days, or a week at most since Miracle Day occurred, no?)

I think they've already stated on the show that people aren't healing, and what's worse, they're still aging.
Yea, I caught that everyone is still aging (Hence, how Jack ends up looking like Boe), but, I don't see how Rex got up out of his hospital bed and is improving each episode if he isn't healing. Sure, he's struggling and in pain, but, his condition seems to be improving

I think that in his case, they patched him up enough that he can be functional, and he's just dealing with the pain. It's not going away, hence the painkillers, but he can keep going (and get it on) well enough.

When they say that no one is HEALING though, I take it to mean that no one is healing from trauma as JACK would have. If someone gets a papercut, it should be okay. A pole thought the chest, not so much.

What's the difference between a hole in your chest and a paper cut, other than size of wound? A paper cut, under normal circumstance would seal itself up in 2 or 3 days. A hole in your torso (that isn't fatal), although it would take time, would heal itself as well under normal circumstances, stitched skin would knit back together, etc. So, if a papercut would heal, why wouldn't a hole in your chest?

The difference is that they DID sew Rex up and otherwise get him into shape to run around; save for the pain, he may actually live as his plumbing has been patched for the most part (dunno what that white thing was under his open wound - did they just stuff it full of gauze when he took off from the hospital?).

As for Twista Neckchick and Blinky McBarbeque, they will not likely be as lucky when we're done with the series...

Oh, absolutely on the Burn victim (to put it mildly) and Dichen's character (though, if she untwists her neck, and the spine wasn't damaged, who knows, maybe she can recover, though I don't think it's possible for a spine not to be damaged with that kind of injury). That would be abnormal healing. But, with Rex all sewn up, if a papercut would heal, the hole in his chest should be no different. If a hole in the chest doesn't kill you, and its medically treated, under normal circumstances it will heal (sure it wouldn't heal anything like pretty, but...)

I dont think they ever said people didn't heal that would be a whole other scenario.
Surely all he's been doing would stop healing though and could make the damage worse causing more pain.

Yeah I agree. I didn't hear anything about not healing either.

He's healing but still moving around which is aggravating his wound. His body should be going into shock and he shouldn't be able to stand up, let alone run, jump or have sex. But remember that Jack said that people were "extra-alive" (whatever that means) which is the writer's cheat for why Rex can still be active and why a women with a broken neck can walk around.

What surprise me is they haven't covered the level of conciousness. It would be better to be brain dead and unaware than living in eternal pain. I would like this to be explored. When the mans head was cut off he was still alive but was he aware and thinkining about what was going on.

What happens if you are vaporized I am wondering? That has to be a close to death as these people can get. Maybe round up all of the should be deads and nuke them just to save hospital space and medicine.

Yeah that's a good question. So what if the body was completely destroyed? (Yeah I know mass is not supposed to able to be created or destroyed but c'mon) Then what?

Let's say the Vogons point their crazy-ass-destroy-all-death-ray© at Joe Blow on the street and completely destroy him on the molecular level. Does that mean that he still "lives" as stardust like Astra or does that finally allow him to die (or cease to exist)?
