Most Annoying Commercials

Probably a Southern California-only ad campaign, but does anyone else really dislike the commercials for Universal Studios' "King Kong 360/3D" attraction?

Oh, man, that commercial was awful (the HeadOn one). And what's worse is, I know they deliberately timed the release of that ad to the outbreak of the war between Hezbollah and Israel, and then bombarded every news station with it liked crazy.
Call me skeptical, but are you sure about that?

Also the newer All-State commercials, with that idiot saying "I'm (insert driving hazard here)." and proceeding to wreck a car. Frankly, I trusted them more when the one guy did his best to channel Morgan Freeman and quoted statistics.

Oh the Mayhem commercials are great stuff!

Yep.

For me, the most successful adverts are those that stand out from the crowd so much that they are remembered long after the TV or radio is switched off. This can be achieved in two ways. In one way the advert can be a great work of art, or capture the zeitgeist, or just be really really clever and groundbreaking by drawing upon several elements.

The other most effective way for an advert to be remembered is to be completely and utterly annoying, so much so that you often remember it for the bad reasons yet can't help but think of the brand. Here are three such TV adverts of late from the UK:

If you live in Illinois, Eastern Iowa, or Mississippi, you may have seen commercials for Midwest Technical Institute. That is where I work. The commercials are absolutely obnoxious. My boss got this idea in his head that it takes the human brain seeing something 7 times for a person to remember it, so he plays our commercials 7 times every hour during peak TV times. He does the same thing with radio advertisements.

Your boss isn't wrong -- at least not in spirit. Most forms of advertising require a good deal of repetition in order to be effective at their goals. This is especially true in the case of brand awareness campaigns.

Oh... and there's this one I'd like to single out for special attention:

and here are Charlie Brooker's 's comments on it:

:guffaw:

Brooker once complied a list of annoying people in adverts.
Actually, he had three lists:
(NSFW language and possibly offensive content right from the start in all these links)

I'm fully in agreement with the adverts that ZR has posted. Particulary the Frosties one which infuriated me to know end back when I was a teenager.

When I've watched US TV, its more the frequency of ads over the content of them that annoys me, seriously in the UK we have ad breaks every 15-20 minutes and they last on average 3 minutes. In the US you seem to have them every 7-8 minutes and they last 5 minutes on average! How do you watch TV?!

THIS. Especially that f***ing Go Compare idiocy. If I had my way I'd have those arrogant cretins burned at the stake for that inane travesty. :klingon:

Progressive insurance. Incredibly corny, and that "Flo" woman looks like a horse-faced carnie. Disturbing.

Add to that they try and claim they save people money which is irrefutable bullshit.

Well, the logic for all insurance companies is this. On average, those who switched saved ...

Of course, those who didn't save money chose not to switch, so they aren't factored into the average.

You could save [this amount] by switching.

Or you could, you know, not save that amount. The adds are technically truthful, but very deceptive (and all insurance companies are that way).

The singer, Welsh tenor Wynne Evans, has somehow managed to forge a singing career despite still being recognised as "that Go Compare guy." (I read that the character actually has a name: Gio Compario. :guffaw:)

My girlfriend loves those Old Navy commercials where the narrator describes all the fun activities that the static mannequins are involved in. I think they are creepy and annoying and am happy that I haven't seen any lately.

At least the creepy plastic-faced Burger King guy did run around and do stuff!

This is a New England (or maybe just CT?) local one... Bob's Discount Furniture. Any of his ads. I've shown remarkable restraint in not egging Bob's house, and I've known where it is for about 6 years now.

The most annoying commercials to me are the ones where a company/product attacks another company/product. I really don't get this. If they're so good, why do they feel the need to attack and insult others? Not only that, but the vitriol almost always seems to be in one direction, with the target never responding in kind. Some examples:

Mac attacks PC
Burger King attacks McDonald's
Pepsi attacks Coca Cola
pretty much all the phone companies other than AT&T
...and so on.

This also applies to political campaign commercials.

The AT&T Flash Mob commercial drives me insane. I want to punch my T.V. every time it's on.
That one more puzzles me, than annoys. Okay, the one guy didn't get the message and is a half hour early, got that. Then why are all the others also standing around a half hour early in a train station, the ones who did get the message?

----

The local (maybe nation wide) Target Department stores make a point in December that they are having a "Holiday Sale," and not a Christmas sale. Then on December 26, they promptly have a "After Christmas Sale."

Pick one already.

:)
