How many black characters were in TOS?

Yevetha

Commodore
I am not using the afro-american because there might had been some South-African actors or whatnot.

I only know about Boma and Uhura so far.

Commodore Stone (guest star, one appearance) and Dr. M'Benga (guest star, two appearances) are two that immediately come to mind.

Uhura
Boma (The Galileo Seven)
Commodore Stone (Court Martial)
Dr. Richard Daystrom (The Ultimate Computer)
Dr. M'Benga (A Private Little War, That Which Survives)
Lt. Charlene Masters (The Alternative Factor)
Lt. Evans (Elaan of Troyius)

That's all I can come up with for speaking roles off-hand.

Lieutenant Shea (played by Carl Byrd) was the fellow lucky enough to not have his essence (when reduced to one of those "dehydrated" crystalline shapes) crushed by Rojan the Kelvan in "By Any Other Name."

Shea? Must've been Black Irish! :)

Does the crewman who speaks Swahili to Uhura (actually one of the salt vampire's many guises) in "The Man Trap" count?

I've seen "City on the Edge..." so many times... straight after the titles, and McCoy beaming down... there's a guy who follows Kirk out of the turbolift, with the biggest afro seen in Trek until possibly TMP. Non speaking but a gold shirt, presumably to take over for an injured Sulu.

Do those two half-black dudes (left half and right half respectively) from Season 3 count?

As two, or just one?

Alden was supposed to be a regular, too! (Or, at least, a recurring player along the lines of Sulu and Scotty). But, then again, considering how little his character had to do, it's not surprising that he was dropped.

The kid Don Linden from "And the Children Shall Lead" plus his two dead parents shown in recorded footage.

Why not? The actor was 35 year old James Earl Jones.

You mean Vince Howard? Jones has never, AFAIK, appeared on any incarnation of Star Trek. They did get him to voice a character in an early episode of Stargate SG-1, though.
