Any Xena:WP fans on the boards?

Aside #7

What you miss from the "video"commentary (but not the audio) on that Alti/Caesar scene is Lucy exclaiming, "Oh My God! Claire has SUCH an amazing physique!"

Lucy is intrigued by watching "Alti" use sex as a weapon, since that's not her usual M.O.

(I beg to differ with Xena's actress. Alti has used sex as a weapon, she just used her apprentice's sex {Adventures in the Sin Trades}... rather than her own. ;) )

Lucy and Rob both commented on how this was the "1st time" Alti was dressed up rather than covered up in deer hides, blood, chicken bones and black makeup.

Lucy revealed that THIS version of Alti... the sexy high priestess, was what Claire thought Alti was going to be all along when she arrived on set for the first time so long ago. Her thinking turned a full 180 degress when they put her into the traditonal Shamaness makeup and "She had to develop that character on set the first day" as Lucy tells us.

Whew!

If Claire came up with the frighting Alti with one morning's prep, imagine what would have happened with a week's forethought!

The final fight in the sun filled green grassy field shows us two things...

First, this isn't our Xena yet... since she let not one but TWO arrows hit her!

Second... this is no longer Caesar's Empress.

At the end of the teaser of this ep... where Xena has vaulted from the horse onto the steps of Caesar's palace to acknowledge him as "My Emperor" as he acknowleded "My Empress." there is a very uncharacteristic "giggle" escaping Xena's control.

When that happened, Lucy noted, "She's very pleased with him." and Rob commented, "Of course, she's happy." One wonders exactly what she's happy with, being Empress, being head of the army, being Caesar's wife?

We learn later that she likes being in the fighting in the senate for her Army's financial well being, that she likes playing the Empress at the theater as she interacts with playwrights from her home country. But in the bedroom scene between the "happy couple", we learn that intimacy between them has been absent "for a long time."

Caesar had promised to free Gabrielle, but Xena shed her velveteen robes and dressed in her leather garb to follow the playwright at a distance. Was she seeking a last talk with Gabrielle, or did she suspect her husband would betray her? We'll never know for sure, but it was very telling when she spat out...

"You betrayed me again, Caesar. No matter what life you live, you'll always be scum! Not even the Fates could change that."

Rob commented during the battle that it was a "stretch" for this Xena to have fought as well as she did, given the fact that the Warrior Princess never fully developed in this reality. I have to say, its been strange to watch Xena without her chakram... but even more to watch her without a sword! The only time we see her with one was when she ripped it out of her opponent's hands and killed him with it. Again... I see this episode as a timelapsed version of 6 years of Xena. We see her relatonship with Gabrielle blossum overnight, and we see her inherent talents as a warrior do the same.

Of course, if she WAS our Xena, fighting off 20 guys and avoiding the archers would have been a piece of cake! Not only that... but the person being dragged at the end of the scene would NOT have been Xena.. but would have been CAESAR!

Aside 7a:

I forgot to mention something, and since this last scene is the last time we see them, I thought I should bring it up now.

I love Empress Xena's leather fighting togs.

So does Renee as she commented upon them at the head of act 1 when Xena was walking arm in arm with Caesar.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_154.jpg

Lucy's comment was it was a devil to try to keep all the leather laces straight. What amazed me about it was that it not only was very functional (take off the gold chest armor and it looks like just another "work suit") but it was very sexy despite the lack of exposed skin.

The other thing about this outfit, is that you really understand why Lucy laughs at strangers who meet her for the first time and are "disappointed" that she's not bigger (I assume we are discussing breast size) than she is, since they are used to seeing her in that Xena "wonderbra" / breast plate armour.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_160.jpg

vs

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_3/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1895.jpg

And for the record, Renee isn't the only one critiqueing the accoutrements (she likes Xena's leathers, she laughs at Gabrielle's theatrical gown, she revels in the textures of Xena & Caesar's velveteen robes) during this show. Lucy get her 2 cents in too... "complaining" about the "blue things" ...

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_353.jpg

&

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_383.jpg

...the two women wear in the silent balcony scene and the rag dresses that both eventually have to wear.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_785.jpg

While a nice shout out to "Ides of March", they weren't fun for the actresses to revisit.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1425.jpg

Costumes aside, Lucy was more apt to laugh about their hair during the commentary... first teasing Renee about "Gabrielle's complicated hairdo at the theater,

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_269.jpg

and then the "next day" laughing at her own hairdo with the sexy royal purple velveteen look.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_647.jpg

I think she apologized to Renee by saying, "I was a bit quick with the bad hair accusation, Ren!"

Episode # 133 Season 6 #18 "When Fates Collide"

ACT III continues: (and the bookends start to appear)

Brutus enters Caesar's ornate office. http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_306cd.htm

Julius Caesar: "How do the legions look?"

Brutus: "Excellent, but there is some... concern about the Empress."

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_307cd.htm

Julius Caesar: "She... defied my orders and attacked Roman troops. That's an act of treason punishable by death."

Brutus: (He's strangely clueless when it comes to Caesar's motives) "But she's very popular. The troops look up to her." (and this is supposed to please the EMPEROR?)

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_309cd.htm

Julius Caesar: (His tone is becoming very calculated, as he turns to look at his "friend") "And... what about you, Brutus? Do you also look up to Xena? (He doesn't get an answer, so he chums the water some more.) Alti will be joining us on our march east as my new Empress. Do you have a problem with that?"

Brutus: (Danger Will Robinson! Danger!) "Caesar, if I speak out it is from concern. It doesn't mean I'm any less loyal to you." (He smiles at his friend, the Emperor, as Caesar walks up to him.)

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1415.jpg

Julius Caesar: "Please... don't misunderstand me. It's not that I love you any less... but... that I love (And with that Caesar thrusts a dagger into Brutus' torso as his face contorts)... Rome... (and he twists the dagger) more."

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_312cd.htm

Brutus: "Uh! Oh!" (He falls dead at the feet of his Friend... the Emperor.)

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_314cd.htm

Julius Caesar: "And I am Rome." (He stands over the body of Brutus, hand holding the dagger as if recalling another assasination so many years ago.)

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1424.jpg

Act III continues one more time.

Episode # 133 Season 6 #18 "When Fates Collide"

ACT III concludes:

Neo/Joxer has just led Gabrielle into the prison to see Xena. As he unlocks the door to the Empress' cell, we see he is just as ignorant of the sexual politics at play, as Gabrielle is herself.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1425.jpg

Neo: "I can't believe they were gonna kill you for writing that bad play." (Gabrielle looks up at him.) "I saw it. Could'a used a few more fight scenes."

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_318cd.htm

Gabrielle: (Polite to a fault) "I'll keep that in mind."

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_316cd.htm

[Gabrielle walks over to the cot where the bruised and battered Empress lays in her own rag dress, she kneels next to her and whispers]

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1427.jpg

Gabrielle: (Whispers) "Xena."

Xena: (The voice is raw as she croaks) "Gabrielle, you shouldn't have come."

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1443.jpg

Gabrielle: "Alti showed me something. Another world or... time."

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1447.jpg

Xena: "That doesn't matter now." (She reaches her left hand up to grasp Gabrielle's right shoulder in an effort to sit up and grimaces in pain.) Ah-h-h-h!"

Gabrielle: [Whispers] "I'm sorry."

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_326cd.htm

Xena: [Whispers as she tries a reassuring smile.] "That's OK."

Gabrielle: (She stands in front of the Empress an whispers) "Xena... when I'm with you... this emptiness that I have felt my entire life... is gone.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1456.jpg

(Xena's face is alternating between hope and despair as Gabrielle sits down next to her on the cot)

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_330cd.htm

Gabrielle: "You have to tell me what's going on."

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1459.jpg

Xena: (She turns grimly toward the playwright on her right side.) "Caesar changed our fate... giving us this godforsaken world."

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1464.jpg

(Gabrielle starts gently caressing Xena's back, avoiding the crossbolt wound that is draining from the right shoulder)

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_347cd.htm

Gabrielle: "There must be something that I can do."

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_336cd.htm

Xena: (Sounds like OUR pre-Gabrielle Warrior Princess, doesn't it?) "No... what you can do is get out of here alive. I have to go through this alone."

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1476.jpg

Gabrielle: [Sounds like our Battling Bard, doesn't it?] "I can't let you die."

Xena: (No matter how bloody this woman is, she looks so beautiful when she smiles!) "Some things are worth dying for. Isn't that what your play was about? Being prepared to sacrifice all for love?"

Gabrielle: [Nods in agreement] "For love."

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_343cd.htm

Xena: (The smile is gone as she looks across the cell) "In the other world, my destiny was linked to Caesar... and that cross... and I hated them both... "

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1481.jpg

(Then she turns back to Gabrielle in wonderment)

Xena: "but now I realize that everything happens precisely as it should... precisely."

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_332cd.htm

Gabrielle: (Gabrielle stands to face the Empress once more) "Xena-- "

Xena: (Always looking out for her, no matter what lifetime.) "Go now, Gabrielle."

Gabrielle: "I can't."

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_3/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1494.jpg

(Gabrielle reaches out to caress the bloodied face with both hands.)

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_351cd.htm

Xena: (She moans quietly as she pleads) "Go now. Get out."

Gabrielle: [Whispers as she continues to caress that face] "No."

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_3/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1496.jpg

Xena: "Get out."

Gabrielle: "Don't."

Its now her turn to quietly plead with a woman she only met 3 ? days ago. Suddenly we hear "boots" in the corridor, and see Joxer/Neo arrive at the cell door.

Neo: "Empress... it's time."

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_352cd.htm

He unlocks the cell door and the troops enter, going directly to The Empress' right and left side as Gabrielle continues to hold that face in her hands before we see one final smile.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_3/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1497.jpg

Xena: "I'll love you forever."

Someone has finally pulled Gabrielle away as she impotently cries...

Gabrielle: "Don't touch her."

Soldier: "Come on!"

(The Empress is roughly pulled upright, and stumbles on her wounded leg before straightening up. She pauses briefly at the cell door to make one final request.)

Xena: "Uh!" (To Neo) "Get her out alive."

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_356cd.htm

Neo turns to watch a shattered Gabrielle fall back onto Xena's prison cot as the troops lead the Empress away.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_357cd.htm

Soldier's Voice: "Let's go!"

I love it when they do allternaterealities. and this paticular one was a fantastic one.

there was an episode I think in season five or six where they meet a women who has exceptional skills as a warrior but she listens to voices. she and xena get into it and after the fight and xena tends to her wounds and is talking to her self about why the woman seems so familar because she reminds her of her self. who was that woman for some reason I've seen her before. and in something resentlly to.

You are thinking of Najara in season 4. Her character was so well received in "Crusader" that she returned later in the season in "The Convert".

From "Crusader", before our Warrior Princess has figured out they AREN'T alike!

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s4/crusader/xena_s4_crusader_dArc_225.jpg

Najara: (She stops her silent meditation to greet the woman walking up behind her.) "Xena."
Xena: "The Jinn?"
Najara: "No-- I recognized your footsteps. The Jinn haven't visited me all day. Sometimes, they disappear for weeks at a time. I'm never angry, though. I understand. They're very busy. There's so much darkness in the world."
Xena: "Najara, your hospice... why don't you start it in the village you're going to take tomorrow."
Najara: "Ah... now I understand. You don't plan to return after your mission against Marat. You want a place to leave Gabrielle."
Xena: "She'll die if she stays with me. You said it would take something drastic to change our destiny. Maybe this is it."

http://www.mikes-images.com/eps/crusader2/pages/crusader2_mq_0731cd.htm

Najara: "As soon as she realizes you've left her, you know she'll follow you."
Xena: "I see such joy in her eyes when she talks to you about your mission. She's been looking for meaning. I think you can give it to her. It hasn't always been good for her, being with me. I seem to hurt her."
Najara: "I know she forgives you. I promise I'll do everything I can to justify your trust."
Xena: "You better. Thanks."

Back at the campsite, as Xena looks at a sleeping Gabrielle.

Xena: (Whispers) "Goodbye, Gabrielle."

And of course.... AFTER Xena has figured out this crusader is into murder and tries to get Gabrielle away from the zealot.

http://www.mikes-images.com/eps/crusader2/pages/crusader2_mq_0789cd.htm

Gabrielle: "Najara."
Xena: "Come on, Gabrielle."
Najara: "No! Gabrielle has turned to the light, she's my responsibility now. As you said yourself.. you hurt her. That's not going to happen again."
Gabrielle:
"Najara, don't do this."
Xena: "Get out of the way, Gabrielle."
Najara: "This is between Xena and me. Stay out of it. The light will triumph, Xena."
Xena: "Quit preaching and fight."
Najara:
"All right."

And of course... we all know how THAT fight ended... right?

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s4/crusader/xena_s4_crusader_dArc_317.jpg

What I like about THIS alternate reality, (When Fates Collide) is that despite being "alternate" we see our two heroines within these characters. In fact as the episode unfolds, we reveal the true nature of each woman as they "collide" with each other.

In fact, this is where I disagree with the episode's author. In her interview, she notes that she wanted to show that Xena shouldn't regret her "Evil Xena" past, because from Evil Xena came the Warrior Princess that recognized Gabrielle, the true "Greater Good" in Xena's life.

I disagree, because to me this episode proves that she didn't have to be "Evil" Xena to recognize Gabrielle. These two found each other AND changed each other in just the space of three days. They went from being complete unknowns, to being ready to die for each other.

Xena: "Some things are worth dying for. Isn't that what your play was about? Being prepared to sacrifice all for love?"

I forgot to add, the actress who played Najara was the same one who starred in the CBS series "Cold Case". Her name is Kathryn Morris.

I suspect you are also recalling season 3's "Forgiven" where Xena tries to rehab a teenager that reminds her of herself. Xena tends to Tara's wounds after Gabrielle beats "The Tarturas" out of her. (To be fair, Tara did the same to Gabrielle in the teaser, because Gabrielle refused to fight "a kid".)

Tara: “Go away! I was just I was just giving her my best shot! [Cries] I’m bad! I know I am! I’m really... I’m really, really bad!”
http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s3/forgiven/xena_s3_forgiven_dArc_568.jpg
Xena: “No, you’re not.”

True but she says people still recognise her as 'the girl who beat Xena in a fair fight":)

:guffaw:

I love the ""in a fair fight" part! :bolian:

You got to admit... very few people can put that on their resume! :techman:

Hudson Leick, aka Callisto stole the show, her character was the best, still have lesbian crush on her.

She truly WAS a force of nature, wasn't she! :bolian:  :bolian:

I loved listening to the actress at a con (on youtube) discuss reading the script for "A Necessary Evil" on the jet to New Zealand, and laughing out loud at it.

Callisto: “Let’s play a game, shall we? I’ll answer your question if you answer mine.”
Gabrielle: “All right.”
Callisto: “What did I feel when Xena confessed her crimes? Well the problem is, Gabrielle I never feel anything. I mean, bits and pieces, here and there, but nothing solid. Think back to when you were a little girl and all you knew was your mother and your sister. And all of your faith revolved them. Now, kill them... My turn.”
Gabrielle: “What?”
Callisto: “When I sliced open your husband, how long did it take him to die? [Laughs as Gabrielle runs away]”
Xena: “There’s a path out of the mountains...." (Watches Gabrielle leave the campsite abruptly) "What’s wrong with her?”
Callisto: “We played a game of truth or dare, and she’s not very good at it.”

Aside # 8

I love it when these two actresses are generous in their praise of their colleagues.

Case in point, the joy Renee expressed over David Franklin's (Brutus) work in general over the course of the episode's commentary and especially in this last confrontation with Caesar. "He looks so good in close ups... his acting is so subtle... its all in his eyes."

Likewise, throughout the ep Lucy kept praising Karl Urban's (Caesar) work. At first I (silly girl) thought they were just showing their individual preferences till I realized that Lucy had primarily worked with Karl over the years and Renee with David. This last scene, between Caesar and Brutus pointed out how much Lucy and Rob praised both actor's work... which led to Lucy praising the director. After Rob intoned that "everyone was good"... Lucy's response was simple. "When everyone's good... you have to thank the director."

To me, its a wonderful little insight "behind the scenes", for those of us not involved in this type of collaborative creative process. Hurrah, Lucy and Renee and Rob, for reminding us this IS a team project.

Makes me think of that "Last Dance" con where Lucy admits she always thought of her show as having 2 stars... despite the fact that it was called "Xena:WP". (At 5min 39 sec.. in case this doesn't work again.)

Don't we all?;) I've met Hudson and she's the most beautiful woman I've ever seen in the flesh (and I've met Charisma Carpenter and Michelle Tractenberg). Just lights up the room when she walks in

WFC I liked, especially the end scene, nice to see Alti again, last appearance of Karl Urban in his various roles. One thing, are we to take it at the end that the Fates no longer control mankinds destiny?

Hudson is quite the "catch", but alas I won't be competing with you for her "affections".

Afterall... Janeway DOES rule. ;)

Good question re: The Fates.

My guess... is yes, they are still "in charge".

"You brought the world back to us."

Their world included the Olympian Gods, and we know from the next two eps that at least 2 of them are still around.

When Gabby resets everything, I also bet the Fates not only survived but improved their security to keep straying Former Emperors from breaking into their temple.

It took me awhile but i found a sex scene of Leicks from one of her movies a year or two ago, perfect rack made me jealous...

Aside 8a:

The shoe is on the other foot. Xena is now occupying the cell that once belonged to Alti, and man does she look beaten.

The first thing I want to point out, is the music Joe Laduca is using to underscore the scene. Rob Tapert says its the same as the musice from the prison scene in "Idea of March" and the sunset scene in "Endgame". He mentions it underscores "every one" of these X/G scenes.

Not sure what he means by "every one", but I can attest it was the music under the previous X/G prison scene in THIS episode (where the Empress visits the playwright).

Anyway, the music is quite haunting.

When you listen to the commentary, again you are reminded at Renee's preferences for critiquing performances... and she really likes these "simple" 1:1 X:G moments. (Lucy agrees in the "One Against and Army" commentary.)

As much as they like it, they are not above jerking each other's chain over the "emotion" on display. My favorite example of that is ALSO my fav example of Lucy getting her "pronouns" mixed up.

As Gabrielle is standing before the bruised and bloody Xena, caressing her face, Lucy pipes up... "You were tempted to kiss me there, weren't you Ren?"

And Renee replies, "Yeah! You were looking PRETTY GOOD there!"

We discover from Rob that the author DID put a kiss in there, but he and the director never planned to film it.

Then we discover the problem of "talking" while they are watching the episode for the first time. They don't hear what the characters are saying, much less notice what they are doing.

I say that, because just as Renee is arguing for a little more physical contact like a "hand holding scene" between the two women and Rob is shutting her down on it. But we SEE that physical contact occur! There are four very deliberate two handed caresses by Gabrielle of Xena's battered face as she intermittently grimaces in pain and smiles up at the playwright.

Lucy is also a victim of this problem, when she interjects that it would be inappropriate for these two to be kissing at this point, " we hardly know each other for gosh sake!"

What's funny about this is she interjects that comment JUST as Xena tells the woman holding her face, that she'll "Love you forever!"

I'm just glad the prinicipals in the show can be "mistaken" as much as we casual and not so casual fans can be! :rommie:

Part 2 of WFC commentary (No, part 1 wasn't posted) at the start of the prison discussion.

(Last time I did this, the link did start appropriately but the embedded viideo began at the beginning, which is Alti and Caesar, try 233 sec mark 3:48)
