Murdoch destorys 168 year old paper, News of World to shut down

News International's share price fall has wiped £600m off the Murdoch family fortune in one day. Perhaps that is what has stirred his very sensitive conscience. Sky's share price is still falling as a direct fallout from its connection with NoTW. That's why he's deep-sixing it. It was a shit newspaper from a shit company. Still a few more to go. His takeover of BSkyB is in jeopardy if not completely buggered now.

Delayed for a few months at least - he'll probably still get it unless the scandal somehow manages to bring down all three main UK political parties...

I remember when the NotW (or was it the Sun), caused anti-paedo riots in the early 2000s after printing parts of the sex offenders list illegally, .

And inaccurately, with the result being vigilante attacks on unrelated people with the same names, new occupants of houses formerly occupied by offenders, and so on...

Anyone who follows my posts on the subject (or reads my current sig) knows my view about physical things like books and newspapers disappearing. And as such, I should be sad at seeing a 168-year-old institution die. But frankly the name of NOTW has been sullied so much in the last 40 years - the phone scandal was the latest in a long time of nonsense - that the paper had a terminal cancer that became terminal long before there were cell phones to hack. It just took the patient a long time to die.

I love physical books and physical newspapers and I'll fight to the bitter end (or at least bitch as loudly as possible) to prevent them from being destroyed by digital. But you have to pick your targets, and in my opinion News of the World going away leaves the industry I work in smelling a lot sweeter, even if it's now diminished.

It's a tragedy that this is happening. But in light of their business and news gathering tactics understandable.

It really really really really really isn't a tragedy that this is happening and because of the unethical, underhanded and downright despicable tactics the News of the Screws has used to gather "news" means it should end, no question about it.

The sad thing though is. Murdoch will still get his deal of a century as the Culture Sec is a dick, the Prime Minister will distance himself from his former comms chief, The News of the Screws will be replaced with something else, most likely the Scumday and the most damning thing, nothing of substance will change.

The News Of The World was already in the planning stages of being merged into The Sunday S*n - or to be correct the 'Sun On Sunday'.

This PR stunt goes to show how serious Murdock takes all this illegal hacking ie - not very serious at all.

Let's see the guilty parties involved in this punished - not some PR sham.

(the cynic in me says this is to appease the UK Govt in going ahead with the BSkyB merger that Murdock - and seemingly the Govt - so badly want)

The cynic in you is absolutely correct.

There is nothing good about this, it is nothing more than an underhanded attack on the little people to protect those at the top of News Int. The one person who should be held accountable over all others for this, especially in the accusations of interfering with a criminal investigation, is the only person who is losing nothing. Admitting that the chief exec of News Int is a criminal would be a crushing blow to any hope of a BSkyB buyout, and that is all that this stunt seeks to avoid.

Losing the NOTW is barely a graze on the knee of Murdoch's empire. The only thing this paper was ever good for was as a substantial employer, it's indistiguishable from any other tabloid in its blatant disregard for privacy and ethical practices, and we still have a lot more of those. We gain nothing from this.

To announce the closure of the News of the World, some lucky bastard at one of the papers got to type the headline any journalist dreams of:

End of the World

Damn, you may as well retire once you get to write that one! :guffaw:

(in terms of impact on News International, the company has potential to actually become signficantly more profitable in the long term as a result of these developments. Sun on Sunday (you know it's coming) will be cheaper to run than the separate NOTW business, and assuming the BSkyB takeover eventually goes ahead, it will likely cost News International less than it would have a week ago due to share price fluctuation. Plus, of course, the closing of NOTW is a big news event, meaning more viewers and more readers, which means Sky, Sun, and Times revenue increases. This is the benefit of running an integrated business).
