It's a tragedy that this is happening. But in light of their business and news gathering tactics understandable.

MSNBC
LONDON — Media conglomerate News International said Thursday it is shutting down the News of the World tabloid, the newspaper at the center of a British phone-hacking scandal.
James Murdoch, who heads the newspaper’s European operations, said the 168-year-old newspaper will publish its last edition Sunday. The scandal has cost the paper prestige and prompted dozens of companies to pull their ads. James Murdoch is the son of media mogul Rupert Murdoch.

A tragedy? :wtf:

I don't care if it's 168 years old, it's a disgusting 'newspaper' that uses disgusting methods to get what it wants. Have you even read the details about the hacking scandal?

This is history in the making here. Aside from any job losses directly caused by this, I can't see a tragedy anywhere in this. This is good, and a step forward for media everywhere.

I dunno. There aren't many businesses [at least here in the US] that have been in continuous operation for 168 years. And when one man destroys what must historically been an institution I find it to be a tragedy.

That said, this hopefully should serve as warning to all media outlets that there must be limits to the methods and limits in which people source the news.

To be perfectly honest, the next thing that'll happen is that another tabloid will take its place.

We've got plenty of businesses that old or near enough anyway. We can afford to lose this one.

But yes, the important thing about this is that it'll serve as a warning to other media outlets that you can't go hacking murder victims phones and expect there not to be a backlash.

News International's share price fall has wiped £600m off the Murdoch family fortune in one day. Perhaps that is what has stirred his very sensitive conscience. Sky's share price is still falling as a direct fallout from its connection with NoTW. That's why he's deep-sixing it. It was a shit newspaper from a shit company. Still a few more to go. His takeover of BSkyB is in jeopardy if not completely buggered now.

From what I understood, the latest phone-hacking actually interfered with a murder investigation and destroyed evidence by deleting messages. Why aren't criminal charges being filed? They clearly hired someone to do it, so if they don't offer up the person who did the hacking, aren't they themselves shielding a criminal, on top of hiring someone to commit a crime?

The police are looking into it. That their own have apparently been taking bungs is being investigated by the PCC. Murdoch wants deniable plausibility when NoTW (ex)-staff are charged with corruption.

But, but, but, Murdoch is such a caring and giving guy. He's giving away 100% of the space normally reversed for advertising to charities this weekend:;)

In a statement Murdoch said: "Having consulted senior colleagues, I have decided that we must take further decisive action with respect to the paper. This Sunday will be the last issue of the News of the World."
He said the newspaper would not run any adverts this weekend, adding the advertising space would be donated to causes and charities.

That would be because any company looking to save it's reputation in the UK has pulled right out of advertising already. They left the sinking ship a while ago.

Fair enough if he's doing charities, but it's either that or a half-blank newspaper, and I suspect he wants to at least try and get some good publicity out of it.

and the Royal British Legion severed ties with it over allegations that the families of forces personnel KIA in Afghanistan had their phones hacked...

Murdock killed the real NOTW in 1969. The time for mourning this once great paper was then. That the paper's re-animated corpse is finally being laid to rest, is deserving of only of celebration and good cheer.

so, your saying that Murdoch put a bullet in the head of a zombie NOTW?

which will soon regenerate, Doctor Who-style, in to a new red-top tabloid sunday paper - no doubt the Sun on Sunday...

The News Of The World was already in the planning stages of being merged into The Sunday S*n - or to be correct the 'Sun On Sunday'.

This PR stunt goes to show how serious Murdock takes all this illegal hacking ie - not very serious at all.

Let's see the guilty parties involved in this punished - not some PR sham.

(the cynic in me says this is to appease the UK Govt in going ahead with the BSkyB merger that Murdock - and seemingly the Govt - so badly want)

I remember when the NotW (or was it the Sun), caused anti-paedo riots in the early 2000s after printing parts of the sex offenders list illegally, after the Sarah Payne murder, so its seems to be karma that they got shut down by a populist backlash when they, and other tabloids, like the Mail, were fond of.

It actually makes good financial sense for him to close the news of the screws and simply the Sun seven days a week.

Now all the subs at the Sun have worked out in protest at what's happening to their screws chums.
