Real Steel

Let's face it, this movie should have gotten a marketing tie-in with "Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots" and it would've been even more epic. But, honestly, I think the movie looks "good", but only good in an interesting to see it for the "specticle" sort of way.

But I'm not sure I'm sold on the way Hugh Jackman is going to be in it. Yikes!

Haha yeah, that's the first impression I got too. When I first saw the robots I thought maybe it was a Rock'em Sock'em Robots movie. It does kind of look neat in a way, and at least it looks original.

Yeah, this is one of those where you just have to wonder "Why?" Who thought this would be a cool idea?

Honestly, my main reason for interest in this movie is because I'd love to see a Battletech/Mechwarrior movie (pipe dream I'm sure), so the better movies can get with giant stompy robots, the better shot of that.

I saw this trailer for the first time the other day and my first thought was "Hugh Jackman Agreed to do this?" Seems like the kid is more of a star in the film than he is.

I don't have an interest to see it but if others do, more power to them.

Is this going to have anything to do with Matheson's story?

This is officially based on Matheson's story (they paid Richard for the rights), although they've obviously had to expand it since the original story is only about ten pages long.

Just like Matheson had to expand all those Poe stories to feature-length back in the sixties. :)

Shameless plug: Tor is publishing Steel and Other Stories in October, just in time for the movie.

Watching the trailer, I think two things. One...it's one of those trailers where I don't feel the need to see the movie, because I just saw the whole damn thing in the commercial. Whatever isn't there is easily surmised.

Second, it seems like a combo parody of sports underdog comeback movies and inspiring kid/family movies. It is just that cliche looking...like it's a comedy.

I was interested when I first heard about it - the story is good and the TZ episode a classic (with Lee Marvin!), but now...

Nah.

the guy isn't fighting a robot? (since the CG bots here all have such open frames, he'd be spotted if he tried to disguise himself as the busted droid as in the episode) It's all about CG robots punching each other and not even in a situation where stuff can get trashed in the crossfire? It's The Iron Giant Vs Transformers, but scaled down to TV Fight Night size.

Fuck that shit. Even the robots look like the Hammerstein bot from the 1995 Dredd movie - and that was an actual robot... Maybe if they'd just made an ABC Warriors movie instead...

This just looks shit. Seriously, who the fuck thought this was worth doing - "hey, let's have a brutal boxing movie, but to make it kid friendly all the boxers are obvious machines so we can sell toys of them" Ah, right. So this is going to be an extended toy ad, not a film, right?

I just saw a trailer on TV for this movie, and like everyone else, my first thought was:

Hugh Jackman made a Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robot movie?

What the hell?

This looks terrible.

Richard Matheson wrote the book steel which the movie is based after. this is the same guy who wrote I am legend and what dreams may come?

It looks fun and miindless sci fi which is great.

:eek::wtf::eek::wtf::cardie::cardie:

There's always Robot Jox.

My thought for this movie was "Robot Rocky." Of course, there was a trailer for Warriors before it, which I called "MMA Rocky" (it's set in Philly, which helped me reach that conclusion).

I guess I'm the only one who wants to go and see it. I haven't read Matheson's story or seen the TZ episode based on it, but I actually like the premise. To me it's like I, Robot and Rocky rolled into one. Were we to actually have robots in society, people would use them in this way and it would be a huge money maker in the underground (probably on TV too).

The execution is what matters though, the subject matter is only a part of it.
